the thing about all the handwringing over the deaths of the Romanov children in particular is like. oh, so you think it's bad when kids die due to factors entirely outside of their control, like the social status they were born into? i wholeheartedly agree with you, we should end any system of government that sacrifices the lives of children born into peasant classes, which necessitates killing the entire royal family including the kids. oh? oh, okay, you were arguing for the literal exact opposite thing to happen. i see. and just to double check, you said kids dying due to the circumstances of their birth was a bad thing?
Unexpected Beauty
A masterpiece of Baroque imagination.
Part satyr, part woodland spirit, this extraordinary 17th-century sculpture by Christof Angermair transforms ivory and stag antlers into something both powerful and poetic. The work feels almost alive—its expressive face emerging from nature itself, blurring the line between myth, artistry, and the natural world.
What fascinates me most is how perfectly this object embodies the spirit of its age. Created during a period that celebrated wonder, curiosity, and virtuoso craftsmanship, it is a reminder that great art often lives at the intersection of imagination and technical mastery.
The quality of the carving is astonishing. Every curl of the beard, every furrow of the brow, every contour of the face reveals the hand of a master sculptor. Yet it is the unexpected pairing of materials—precious ivory and rugged antlers—that elevates the piece from sculpture to revelation.
oh fuck... the adderall has hit my system... the change, it's happening... grRRRGH...!! get away from me, before it's too late...!!

When Tess Morgan's son came home with a tattoo, she was griefstricken. She knew her reaction was OTT (he's 21) but it signalled a change in their relationship
This is gold this, absolute gold, the most over the top melodramatic hysterical ridiculous thing I’ve ever read
This is actually so interesting to read- it’s from 2012 but its full of the same anxieties, even some of the same phrasing that many of the guardian’s later pieces on transness use. really hammers home how much of the terfism that emerged in the late 10s was middle class mothers angry at a loss of control over their adult children- whether that be their bodies or their friends or their opinions- and making that everyone’s problem because they have the power to do so
He says, “I’m still the same person.”
I look at him, sitting there, my 21-year-old son. I feel I’m being interviewed for a job I don’t even want. I say, “But you’re not. You’re different. I will never look at you in the same way again. It’s a visceral feeling. Maybe because I’m your mother. All those years of looking after your body – taking you to the dentist and making you drink milk and worrying about green leafy vegetables and sunscreen and cancer from mobile phones. And then you let some stranger inject ink under your skin. To me, it seems like self-mutilation. If you’d lost your arm in a car accident, I would have understood. I would have done everything to make you feel better. But this – this is desecration. And I hate it.”
Also just the classism of her associating tattoos with “vest tops, dogs on chains, broken beer glasses”; like, just say you hate poor people
Jonathan Joss was an Indigenous, gay man who was murdered on the first day of Pride month as well as Indigenous History Month. He died protecting his trans husband. Homophobia and racism aren’t marks of the past, and this is a heart breaking reminder of that.
Praying for a safe journey back to the spirit world, Uncle ❤️🩹🦅
Today is the anniversary of the death of Jonathan Joss (King of the Hill, Parks and Rec). Jonathan Joss was an Indigenous, gay man who died protecting his transgender husband, on the first day of Pride month. Today we remember him and how he protected his family.

Didn’t fully dawn on me until I left the theatre I went to see Boots Riley’s new communist film I Love Boosters at, that I shoplifted a movie about shoplifting by only paying for snacks and not for a ticket. Boots would be proud.
I want more movies from him. His whole style of retro-60s/70s psychedelia, funk music, magical realism and workplace organizing just hits so much.
I don't want anymore movies from him if he's going to keep taking money from the Ellison family after he signed a public statement saying he wouldn't work with any Israeli company
Big news! Could you expand on their financial relationship?
I Love Boosters was produced and funded by a company called Annapurna Pictures, which is owned by Megan Ellison. Her father (who has helped finance and run Annapurna Pictures) is the sixth richest man in the world Larry Ellison, an out and proud zionist who has donated millions of dollars to the IDF and Israel, as well as purched Tik Tok to make it peddle more pro Israel content. He even invited Netanyahu to his private island
Oracle founder Larry Ellison is swooping in to engineer a major reorganization of his daughter Megan Ellison's struggling Annapurna Pictures
Netanyahu and Ellison were seen eating together at Nobu Lanai, a very expensive restaurant on the Hawaiian island of Lanai.
The Ellison family are a major financial backer of the Zionist project of Israel, it was incredibly disappointing to see Boots Riley collaborating with one of them after he signed the pledge not to work with Israeli producers.
My understanding is that (for I Love Boosters specifically) the relationship with Annapurna was limited to a first-look screenplay deal he signed in early 2019, where they basically cut him a check to pay the editors/consultants/etc he'd need to hire to produce a fully polished 'final' screenplay for the movie he pitched within a certain timeframe: in exchange Boots signed a contract that he would pitch it to Annapurna first, though Boots never gave up his right to negotiate over all the major terms of the contract attached to whatever production financing they offered.
Early 2019 is obviously after Larry Ellison's late-2018 brutal restructuring of Annapurna, but apparently he had some sort of lingering post Sorry to Bother You agreement to do so. idk. In any case it was obviously also like six years before he signed that public statement.
I'm not 100% clear on when the final screenplay finished, but the new Larry Ellison appointed money-people Boots pitched it to either turned it down flat or the financing they offered came with unreasonable conditions and strings attached. Boots proceeded to shop it around and the $20 million in financing he got was from the distribution company Neon and from Waypoint Entertainment.
Obviously, if Boots has any further relationship with Annapurna that would be disappointing and a massive betrayal imho, but to say that he was collaborating with the Ellisons after signing that public statement is just literally not factual based on the chronology of events.

Happy Memorial Day
read the ehrc policy & from my understanding:
allowing trans ppl in single sex spaces based on their gender reassignment (ie. trans women in women's spaces & trans men in men's spaces) can be classed as discrimination
allowing trans ppl in single sex spaces based on their assigned gender at birth (ie. trans men in women's spaces & trans women in men's spaces) can also be classed as discrimination, bc it could cause cis ppl discomfort or distress
allowing trans ppl to use single sex spaces makes them mixed sex spaces by default. it can be classed as discrimination to only offer mixed sex spaces and no single sex
the only way to safely avoid legal accusations of discrimination is to either a) refuse/limit trans ppl's access to a service (which is explicitly considered to be lawful & acceptable) or b) offer a third separate mixed sex space for everyone's use
wasn't expecting so many people to find this post... yeah it's pretty awful. just to add to the horror, this is only one specific section, I've included a few other things that jumped out to me below the readmore.
the ehrc code remains a draft for another 6 weeks so there is still time to challenge it. multiple previous drafts have already been rejected and the period for feedback has been extended 4 weeks longer than usual - they expect backlash. organise in yr community, write to MPs, there are protests planned in most UK cities & a mass lobby in London June 24th.
also worth keeping in mind that whatever the outcome, this is not definitive law in itself, just a set of guidelines for applying it. things may be scary but we are not going anywhere and there will be spaces that fight to remain inclusive of us regardless of bs policies. love y'all ✌️
also for those asking for how to support trans ppl in the UK, transactual has a list of resources:

im just so happy i live in a time period where actual meaningful biological transition is possible. even if we lose rights or the ability to exist in public, nothing can turn back the clock on that, and just by having any sort of access to that our lives are made immensely better. millions of our sisters throughout history would never have dreamed of a day where they could have what HRT does for us.
please don't lose the plot of this. if you're a trans person on HRT you're a living miracle, the dream of hundreds of millions of your ancestors. your lives are all deeply meaningful no matter what anyone says.
A prayer by Kalonymus b. Kalonymus ben Meir that appears in his poem ספר אבן בוחן, יג Sefer Even Boḥan (§13), describing the author's wish t
Cursed be the one who announced to my father: “It’s a boy!"... ...How could he twist the course of the stars so much? How could he have erred so in his astrology? A lying tongue, a fool’s mouth it had given him For he foolishly transformed justice to poison He altered the law and transposed the lines
Oh, but had the artisan who made me created me instead – a worthy woman... ...I would say "how lucky am I"
Father in heaven who did miracles for our ancestors with fire and water... ...Who would then transform me from a man to woman? Were I only to have merited this being so graced by goodness...
What shall I say? why cry or be bitter? If my father in heaven has decreed upon me and has maimed me with an immutable deformity then I do not wish to remove it. the sorrow of the impossible is a human pain that nothing will cure and for which no comfort can be found. So, I will bear and suffer until I die and wither in the ground. Since I have learned from our tradition that we bless both, the good and the bitter I will bless in a voice hushed and weak: blessed are you [HaShem] who has not made me a woman.
I think I'm gonna go lay down for a little while.
