Do you have any examples of "fandomizing"? Bc you talk about it and I'm pretty sure I follow, but it's a weird concept to wrap my head around
Sincere fanfiction about politicians is the best example I can think of. Look up ‘rahmbamarama.’ Or– and I suggest this option instead– do not.
The blending of fandom culture and politics. VtM clans as political ideologies (which is what I do, because fandomizing can be fun, but it’s not healthy). It turns ideology into a brand (and an #aesthetic), especially when it’s the kind of fandomizing associated with passive ingestion of facile, mass-marketed stories.
@nocakeno i forgot about this
i’ll go further with this idea.
fandomizing bad because it if everything is our stories it’s equally weighted, and we can use the same tools to criticize everything, and it’s all equally effective (which is to say, not at all; we are giving representation to deck chairs on the titanic). our politicians get treated the same way we treat episodes of wandavision. aoc becomes a meme queen who is in a parasocial relationship with her viewers/voters/fans, playing amogus and taking to youtubers. criticizing her becomes equivalent to criticizing your #fave. she has a story arc. she’s not a politician any more, she’s now your fandom. we forget in this way that we owe her nothing except that which we owe all politicians, suspicion and open hostility.
on the flipside, objection to actual media has to be framed in terms of social justice now. it’s not just internet fandom culture and passive story consumption leaking into politics. it’s the reverse as well. the medium (social media, low entry to fandom) is the message on top of being a two-way stream/conduit. you can’t just dislike steven undertale. you have to dislike it because it erases identities and does a no-growth. no more just being a hater. and like, that’s not to say that stuff isn’t interesting or worthwhile to discuss? and it’s not to say people are insincere about these criticisms (maybe sans universe really did do a no-growth)! but it seems we not only rob ourselves of hater opportunities, but do it to the exclusion of other work. i believe this kind of media crit is a symptom of a lack of power to effect material change. you can’t form a union alone, but you can write a medium article alone.
furthermore
NOT OUR FAVES! thanks, daughter of literally nancy pelosi, for looking out for us, and our faves.
books about/by politicians are especially evil, even the ‘jokey’ ones. that harris book was given to kids at an ice detention facility :)
this mug is from one of my favored vintage-style dress sites. to what end? to what purpose? gay people don’t like this shit unless they’re the rich weirdos who live in boystown.
and of course, the most wretched twitter account PAWsible
fucking grueling.
because what would your fave ice-cream uncle be without an adorable pupperino???? it’s almost enough to make you forget the american grenfell.
(to the onion’s credit they’re making up for lost time by being harsher on biden instead of treating him as the personification of a harmless dril tweet, but still)
i have a folder of harry potter and star wars and avengers stuff libs make, but i am tired and you get the point. there are a bunch of examples of people on ao3 writing about “here’s what the revengers would do if they saw DRUMPH– tony starp would DESTROY him,” but those are by powerless people and who among us has not had fun? sometimes? they’re not really hurting anybody, they’re not being paid to be evil, they’re just being nerds and, hey, at least they’re generating something new-ish.
the west wing should shoulder some of the blame, inasmuch as media has any true impact on our brains (debatable).
note that something being cringe isn’t enough for it to be an example of fandomization. it has to highlight the fact that the way we interact with politics is indistinguishable from the way we interact with fiction stories.
Love this. Would also add that the blurred lines between outright military propaganda and a lot of big name hits that have rabid fandoms is also a problem. The MCU is funded by the US military. They vet the scripts and have a huge role in what does and does not make it in.

...🥂TeTe!!!
Every single odd number has an “e” in it.
LISTEN-
Not all of them. 30 and 50 aren’t spelled with the letter e in it …
father god
…if you can split a number in half evenly, it’s even. 30 and 50 are odd.
-_-’
(15+15=30
25+25=30)
25+25 = 30? You sure about that??
Lord have mercy….

3 days until 2019 and we’re still here
