I'm just gonna leave this here bc I'm mad and I couldn't have said it better myself.

the VMAs (and other award shows) creating a separate “kpop” category is messed up because there are so many racial undertones to not letting Korean artists compete with everyone else. I’m not even an Army and I’m definitely not one of those BTSpop people (bts is kpop, they create pop music in the Korean language). The reason why there is a stigma against kpop is because for so long it’s been treated as some random miscellaneous subgenre. The fact is, based off of sales and popularity, groups like BTS and even Blackpink can and should be nominated against “regular pop” artists. And with BTS specifically, they beat so many records this year (not kpop specific records, global chart and sales records) it’s honestly absurd to limit them to the kpop category.

As long as these kpop exclusive awards exist in western award shows, it basically tells the west that Asian groups who are talented and hard-working enough to reach global success are still lesser than white artists and will never be seen on the same level as white artists.

Edit: Also, don’t even get me started about the fact that they had a kpop soty category and they DIDN’T NOMINATE TWICE FANCY, despite the fact that FANCY literally OUTSOLD like half of the other kpop nominees and I JUST KNOW it’s because white people literally get triggered by kpop cute concepts (fancy wasn’t even cutesy smh)
