The next time someone tells you fanfiction doesn’t have value
Just remember that during the midst of a pandemic, where everyone is scrambling for money, a site that hosts that fanfiction for free and on a voluntary basis, managed to hit their $130 000 goal within less than 24 hours.
STORIES ARE AN ESSENTIAL SERVICE. WRITERS ARE ESSENTIAL WORKERS.
I put myself and everyone I live with at risk almost everyday working as a sanitizer during all this. I have chemical burns all over my hands from the sanitizer we use to remove the virus from surfaces, I’ve had a male coworker taking advantage of these desperate times and using them to constantly harass me, so many customers come in here not wearing masks and talk to me with no regards to social distance, so many customers take out their frustrations with these times onto me, and now I am home as of today because I am now sick. All so of you guys can continue safely grocery shopping without getting COVID from grabbing a Lean Cuisine. Please shut the fuck up. Writing on a website built on pedophilia and incest fan fiction doesn’t give you any value at all during these times.

so women are supposed to grin and bear the books, the comics, the movies, the plays, the tv shows, the stories, the sci-fi, the translated ancient poems, the fucking millennia of men writing about their self inserts torturing women and it being declared as High Art by other men, we’re supposed to read it in our free time, study it in classrooms, include their styles in our own writing, accept their cultural influence as natural, watch it in the cinema, write about it, talk about it, accept it, aspire it, but men can’t tolerate three seconds of female wish fulfilment of a woman snapping the wrist of a creep without feeling personally kicked in the balls.
This reminds me of something I observed in college while I was doing my honors thesis on women in modern horror films. I watched a LOT of horror during that time as part of my research, and sometimes that was done with my family around.
And my dad and brothers? Were deeply disturbed by the movie Jennifer’s Body. I was flabbergasted. It’s not scary! It’s not even that gory. But they were horrified by it. These men who grew up on 70s slashers were legitimately shook by 90 minutes of Megan Fox eating a few teenage boys, mostly off-screen.
Similarly, my all-male reading panel for my thesis? Were so disturbed by my synopsis of the film Teeth that they couldn’t even talk about it. One of them said he couldn’t look at his wife for a week after reading it.
Again, grown-ass men who study and teach media for a living. Who definitely watch and enjoy horror movies. One of whom was a huge Tarantino buff. We watched and read worse in his intro to mass media class! But one movie about a girl whose vag could bite was enough to haunt him.
Then of course you have things like the Gone Girl backlash–men yelling that Amy Dunne is evil and women clamoring to assure everyone that they know she is not someone to emulate–the backlash against Carol Danvers, and, more recently, the griping from MRAs against the upcoming film Hustlers, which is about strippers scamming their Wall Street clients.
My conclusion? Most men–at least most straight, cisgender men, who are both my sample population and most of the ones whining that Carol is a “villain”–are perfectly fine with, and desensitized to, media where men do violence to women (horror movies), or men do violence to men (horror and action movies). They’re even sort of fine when women do violence to women (“ooooo cat fight!”).
But they get intensely uncomfortable when women are depicted doing any kind of violence to men, especially in films that tilt the balance of power to the other side of the m/f gender binary beyond a single moment or scene.
So woman as flesh-eating monster with men as her preferred cuisine? Woman who responds to unwanted sexual contact by biting it off? Woman who frames her cheating husband for murder? Woman whose response to harassment–behavior that many of the loudest whiners know is both creepy and reflective of their own thoughts/actions–is to break something?
Too scary. Unacceptable. Disturbing. These men hate being presented with the idea, even in fiction, that their position of power is socially constructed, that it could easily be flipped the other way. It terrifies them.
In feeling that terror, they experience a tiny modicum of what living, existing, moving, being perceived as a woman in the world is like.
And they flinch every time.
Here have a newspaper comic from 1993
I still can’t get over how many teenage boys and adult men thought that the protagonist of Hard Candy was the antagonist and that it was a horror movie instead of a power fantasy. It was extremely telling how many men found that movie terrifying, while women and teen girls pretty much universally found that movie empowering and the ending relieving.

men be like: oh no,, my ego, my poor ego! oh woman, could you spare a stroke? stroke my ego just once? oh, you refuse? that’s fine, i don’t mind. i diagnose you with whore
i’m so in love with domestic sweetness.
cooking dinner with the one you love while they wrap their arms around you. taking quick kiss breaks in between folding fresh laundry. washing each other’s hair in the shower. giggling and rolling around in the fresh sheets you both just finished putting on. dusting while showing off your latest dance moves and having your sweetheart show off their vocals.
it’s so comforting to have someone that you just enjoy making a home with. because chores done with someone you love isn’t such a chore after all.
I still remember the story my parents tell about me everytime I make a new friend. The wonderful story of the Baby Helmet.
I now realise I should have offered some context.
yes please i would love context thank you
Aight then. Buckle down cause I'm about to tell you the family famous Baby Helmet story.
When I was a kid, learnin to crawl and walk and shit, still a baby, my parents noticed something off about my head shape. So they took me to the doctor.
Turns out I was fucking up my skull formation plates by sleeping on one side of my head constantly which caused the plates to settle in a way they weren't supposed to be settling.
And the doctors baisically were like "On god bro we gonna fix this for you" and low and behold, a solution came.
A helmet. A thick, adjustable helmet that was meant to reshape my skull. I had to wear that bad boy for a while. It was white with purple butterflies on it cause they knew I liked purple and I liked butterflies.
However, there was a cost. And not a money kind. It was my parents sanity going and humor being cranked up.
Because instead of sitting around and being a baby and all that, I found a better use of the helmet.
I realised that it protected my head it gave me the best idea.
To hit my head on every fucking surface there was. It drove my family insane.
They would hear me bonking it on the tv stand, on the floor, on the table, my own high chair. I would even stand up and charge at visitors and my family's legs and just fucking ram into them and full baby speed. It was the most enjoyable pass time that made both me and my parents laugh their asses off.
However, one day at the doctors, they had finally deemed my head fixed and safe. And the helmet was gone (but we still got to keep it).
Now keep in mind that I had been going absolutely ham with this shield on my head for months. I had grown accustomed to it, as though it was a second part of me.
So after we come home from the doctors, we go into the living room and my parents let me and my twin play for a bit.
Soon came the need to bash my head against something.
So I got in position, ready to go. My parents saw it happening. They leapt up, ready to stop me. But they were not fast enough.
It all happened in slow motion. I slammed my head into the floor full force. Silence.
I lift my head. There are no tears or wails. Only confusion. I blinked. Still nothing. I was silent for the rest of the day, coming to terms with the fact that I lost my invincibility.
Never again did I bash my head or ram into people.
And that's one of the many family famous stories about me. And my personal favorite.
fantastic. absolutely wonderful. thank you for this story. reading this has brought me immeasurable joy as i imagine a tiny child ramming into shit with ruthless abandon. 10/10
Unpopular opinion: Being intelligent isn’t an excuse for being unkind.
Pretentious asshole is OUT! Pretentious Sweetheart is IN! Wearing dapper clothes and holding the door open for others makes you feel COOL AS H*CK! Glance up from your hefty books to give a stranger a smile!! Quote literature to inspire others! Be presumptuous in the way that you presume that everyone needs their day to be a little brighter!!!
don’t let the people who have hurt you ruin the things you enjoy. you used to watch that show with your ex? if you love it, keep watching it. your former friend introduced you to your favorite band? don’t stop listening to their music. it might hurt at first, but eventually it’ll stop feeling like it’s their thing and start feeling like your thing again.
not to be like “oh my psychology teacher said blah blah” but in my psychology class, we are learning about classical conditioning and pavlov’s dogs. and you can, of course, become conditioned to associate a stimulus (your favorite band/show) with another stimulus (your former friend/ex). but the thing is, when you keep interacting with the former stimulus without the latter, then a process called “extinction” happens, where you stop associating the stimuli when it keeps occurring without the other. so, this process of reclamation actually has a scientific basis!
