Loss and grief were familiar to Kate but they always bled into rage and hollow anger. Losing her sister and mother, bouncing from school to school while her father oscillated between barely glancing her way and doting upon her for years after as if she were a ghost and his last hope at the same time, hiding herself in a ‘closet’ because the love she wanted was wrong, finally loving a woman and losing everything because of it, losing herself in sex and alcohol and cigarette smoke in dingy alleys.

Kate had always been angry. At the world. At Gotham. At herself. All of it really. And yet that night when she’d been saved she knew, in her bones she knew, a change needed to happen. First the weapons, the fighting, and the barely dragging herself home battered and bruised.

Then a ballistic suit, a tad gaudy but her father couldn’t stand her coming home barely functioning nearly every night, with a tacky wig. Less broken ribs but a lot more attention. Then Batwoman. It was… everything. Sure Bruce made her use rubber bullets but that didn’t change anything. Kate finally had something to fight for again.

Batwoman was freedom and expression and passion and everything Kate needed to rise out of the grave she’d thought she’d buried herself in. And so she fought… so she fights for Gotham. For herself and her family. For her sister and mother, the lives that they should have lived. And she lets her past, her sadness and anger, be her motivation.

She lets it be still and be seen like she lets herself be still and be seen. She’s not as angry anymore. Or maybe she isn’t as sad anymore. There’s always been a blurred line between sadness and anger for Kate.

i need more stories where a trans character hasn’t always known they were trans; i know that’s how many trans people have experienced their gender journey but it’s not like that for everyone. i didn’t know trans people existed for the first eleven years of my life and when i learned about them it was such a revelation. i learned that i didn’t have to force myself into the mold of girlhood society and my family had made for me, i could just be me !

I have a trans man story about this.

Since I’m pre-t I still have my period but since I’m socially out as trans I use men’s bathrooms. One time at the college the family bathroom was taken and so I went into the men’s room to do my business. I tried opening the little pad as quietly as I could manage, but the rustling and ripping sound still happened. I froze in silence because I didn’t know if the other guy in the men’s room heard it or not.

Then after a little bit of silence I hear…

“Who has a bag of chips?”

And in a panic I just whisper back to him “I’m not sharing.”

Then I hear a huff before he finished his business and left.
