Re: Grace somehow managing to write a paper that destroyed his career being unbelievable and etc, a) you are absolutely correct here and b) my personal take since reading the book, where there's a blink-and-you'll miss it reference to Grace being really done with academia already by the time he wrote it is that he's one of those people who had an absolutely miserable PhD experience and felt stuck by the sunk cost fallacy of it all, which may have lead to him sort of self-sabotaging his career in other ways we don't know as much about.
Like, he felt like he put too much work in to just leave/quit, but at the same time, that's what he really wanted to do. And Grace is clearly someone who hates making decisions and choices for himself. He just wants someone to tell him what to do -- or in this case, that he's not allowed to do it anymore. So he got a postdoc but just started sort of quiet-quitting the whole thing, and everyone was really frustrated with him and his performance already. So when some controversy came along at the conference? It was a neat and tidy excuse to get rid of him.
Ohh interesting! And something I can also see. The whole thing makes a lot more sense—and also feels a lot more resonant to his character and his emotional arc—if he is kind of lying to himself about what actually went down and what everybody else thinks about him.
@bicherrim wrote something along somewhat similar lines in the comments of the post too:
I don’t remember where I read it, but I like the concept that Grace wasn’t actually ousted/blackballed from academia at all, it just feels better to him to frame it that way – in reality, he couldn’t handle the criticism his paper received, lost his shit, and then afterwards was so embarrassed that he dropped out of the field entirely so he wouldn’t have to face anyone about it.
And both of these options feel way more believable—that “I was kicked out because they couldn’t handle my UNCONVENTIONAL IDEAS” is an ego-soothing narrative he built up around what happened to avoid acknowledging that leaving was his choice. Ending up as a middle school science teacher was clearly making him much happier than academia was—is it because this is something that feels more genuinely fulfilling and meaningful than the relentless pressure cooker gristmill that is academia? Is it because children can never meaningfully be peers and can’t criticize him, and among 13-year-olds he’ll always be unquestionably the smartest person in the room? Little of column A, little of column B, probably. And he can do that while also clinging to this fantasy of being Astrobiology’s Alfred Wegener and Someday Everyone Will See I Was Right And They Were So Unfair To Me, and crucial to the fantasy is that it’s incumbent on everyone else to change their minds about him, not him to do anything.
And I like how the movie does allude to this interpretation that there’s some willful mental rewriting of what actually happened on Grace’s part:
STRATT: Do you stand by what you wrote?
GRACE: I was fired for standing by what I wrote.
STRATT: You were fired for calling the leading scholar in your field a “staggering waste of carbon” at the UNESCO conference in Denmark.
GRACE: You… you heard about that, huh?
Stratt like. You weren’t disliked for your ideas, idiot, you were disliked for your behavior. The problem wasn’t that you defended an unpopular idea, the problem was getting assholish and unprofessional about it. Luckily for you the world is ending and I don’t have the time to worry about your attitude!
And Stratt unintentionally is providing everything Grace actually wants: someone who will unpromptedly tell him “I need you for your brilliant and unconventional ideas… and also you do not get a choice in the matter.”
Your blood, what matter is it made of?
Do you feel it travel in and out your heart?
having an online persona is kind of funny bc you post abt something like twice and suddenly that’s the only thing ur known for...u post about cheese a couple times and suddenly ur the cheese mutual
...you know what, OP? I think I truly do understand how that feels.
Cybersmith getting his persona reduced into the "human pet guy" tragically omits so many of his other traits like "diaper fetish"

☕️ favorite grocky fics :)
holy shit sorry this took me so long to answer but boy do i have some. there are definitely more than this but here are some that jump to the forefront of my mind:
all 7 fics in the "grocky works" collection by spqr - i'm of the opinion that this author is like. a generational talent. no one is doing it like them. when i think of the best fics i've ever read, ever––not just for this ship, but for any ship––i think about these
dog days by furiosophie - this one came out pretty recently and fucking blew me away. it's the kind of writing i WISH i had the chops to pull off. the yearning is delicious. it also holds the high honor of being one of only two grocky fics i've ever cried while reading
the mortifying ordeal of being known by serotoninshift - just an all timer to me. the characterizations are so good, and i really love the author's take on how eridians get aroused/feel pleasure being related to sound. the dynamic is just so right idk man
a first course in anthro-eridian sexuality studies by falling_cosmos - and this one was the first grocky fic that made me cry. made me completely insane. the exploration of how earth would react to finding out about grace + rocky having a more-than-platonic bond was so well-executed
the scientific method by quarfield - still a wip but you gotta. you just gotta get there. it's funny, it's hot, it's creative, it's so well-characterized. the sex is batshit crazy in the best way and the banter is top-notch
rocky curious too by serenfire - a grocky classic imo. if you haven't already read this one you either just got into this ship or you've got homework to do right now immediately. i love their voices in this, and i love the way the main story is bracketed by grace + rocky "telling" the story
both fics in the xeno jerkoff cinematic universe series by grimark - oooohhhhhh boy the way this author writes them both. woof. there's so much repression happening in here and it's so fucking yum yum delicious. i don't normally go in for unresolved romantic tension because i'm a big sappy pathetic fucking baby but it worked for me here and if you read the fics you'll see why (hint: it's the repression) and also it's just extremely well written
the joy of gracerocky is getting to get a little gross icky yuck with it
Rocky being considered small and weak by Eridian standards, so it turns him on like nothing else that Grace is so malleable and easy to manhandle. He loves that he can pin Grace down with barely any effort; that he can beg Rocky to stop and there's nothing he can actually do if Rocky decides they're continuing.
gee adrian how come you get to have two saviours of the universe
i’m gonna need everyone in the “ryland grace fucks” part of PHM fandom to get so much freakier with it. what, are you too good for smut that involves a faceless rock crab?? are your sensibilities too delicate for some good old fashioned alien fucking??? get markiplier tf out of here you cowards
Okay but what if Markiplier *is* the alien??
I know in my soul that there’s a little G+R carved into the trunk of the biodome tree and written in sharpie on the walls of the hail mary and traced into the sand on grace’s beach even though the waves will wipe it clear soon enough. there are hand and claw prints peppered all over the cliff face. on the ship, there are still fingerprint smudges on the xenonite partitions
Rocky would be disgusted by Grace's nightly dental routine at first, sure. But after a while he can't help but notice Grace's long, slender fingers holding the delicate piece of floss and slipping it in between his small, fragile teeth. The way it ever so slightly pushes aside the tissue Grace's teeth are embedded in. The repetitive motion of Grace wrapping the dental floss around his fingers. Rocky would be ALL over that and you can't tell me otherwise.
Grace using earbuds on low volume to be polite to Rocky, who can still hear everything he’s listening to anyways and would have already told him to please PLEASE stop listening to Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls on repeat all day long, except the sound waves blasting into Grace’s head are giving Rocky the perfect opportunity to perv on his ear canals
lying in bed smiling at the ceiling thinking about stoic pragmatic book!rocky coming back to erid when the PTSD fully hits and the cataclysmic levels of shame he'd feel the moment his system of tightly controlled rationality allows itself to unravel. he's filling both the shoes and the caskets of a crew of 23, making himself meet their loved ones and attend all of their funerals trying to be presentable and collected and rational, he's trying to be the person their mate waited for AND FAILING! acting more and more erratic, falling into ridiculous magical thinking, and he can feel himself being irrational and he hatessss it so much. stupid stupid stupid. get yourself together (not how any of this works alas)
