something that frustrates me is that so much of liberal communication requires ignoring the causes of things.

like if you are writing about anything for a liberal workplace, organization, news outlet, etc., you can talk about things like racism, homelessness, misogyny, trans-antagonism, ableism, etc., but you can't get into the material reasons why these things happen, because it implicates racial capitalism and settler colonialism. and that's the thing that liberals will never allow you to acknowledge.

so you get all these articles like "wow all these bad things are happening, why do Black people have worse health outcomes in so many areas like maternal mortality or covid risk? why is agricultural and domestic labor paid so low? why are certain areas of the world constantly in states of political unrest and struggling with repeated environmental disasters? why are some countries 'undeveloped'? why is there so much sexual violence and abuse?" and then they spin a wheel that only has two possible answers it can fall on and that's "bad apples" or "it's just the way it is"

What ‘gifted child’ discourse is ACTUALLY saying: The way many educational systems treat children who’ve been identified as ‘gifted’ is actively harmful in that it a. obliges kids to give up socialising with their same-age peers in favour of constantly courting the approval of adult ‘mentors’ who mostly don’t give a shit about them, b. demands that they tie their entire identity to a set of standards that’s not merely unsustainable, but intentionally so, because its unstated purpose is to weed out the ‘unworthy’ rather than to provide useful goals for self-improvement, and c. denies them opportunities to learn useful life skills in favour of training them up in an excruciatingly narrow academic skill-set that’s basically useless outside of an institutional career path that the vast majority of them will never be allowed to pursue.

also: the way “gifted” children are taught largely just rewards them for already knowing things or having a specific skill come easily to them, and thus not only gives them severe anxiety about asking for help or not knowing something right away for fear of disappointing those adult mentors, but also actively discourages them from learning HOW to learn things and pick up new skills, thus sabotaging any life they might try to pursue outside of that institutional career.

not sure how to word this properly but i feel like.. the way unnecessary cattiness is "rewarded" online (especially on twitter) really just made some people forget how to act normal. i agree that sometimes that needlessly exaggerated rudeness is funny but in most cases it just makes you look like an idiot tbh... i don't mean to sound too pretentious either - i'm just thinking of those cases where somebody asks a genuine question and in return they get the nastiest fucking reply from somebody who clearly doesn't speak to enough people in real life... like do you hear yourself? do you think this anyone finds you intimidating instead of just off-putting? congrats on being the grand champion of maladjustment i guess

You all really should start reading strike manifestos or statements before calling boycotts or assuming what the strikers want you to do. Like, I know I sound like s broken disc by now but you should just do it anyway if you really care about their cause.

But for more specific reasons:

- if they haven't called for a boycott but people do it anyway it can cause them legal issues with their employer who can claim they called or insinuated they wanted one

- depending on the industry, earnings, bonuses or pay rises can depend on the employer's revenue. Some workers cannot afford a boycott.

- many strikes are not to "stick it up to the man" or to "bring the company down". Sometimes they are to bring attention to a specific injustice or illegal thing the company has done. By not reading the manifesto and just going "boycott the company" you're kind of defeating the whole point.

- if creatives are on strike they might not want that to prevent you from actually consuming what they've put effort in. Might surprise you that your working conditions can be bad and you can still feel proud of what you've created.

- statements or manifestos might actually have steps the workers want you to take. They might provide links to charities with similar goals, phones you can call, representatives you can contact, hashtags to use to show up in reports, etc.

Just read it and understand the reason for the strike and what's the best way to help (sometimes it IS a boycott). at the end of the day, you decide how you support, just make sure the information you share is correct and in line with the workers requests.

I know this is a shitpost but the reason for that is teeth aren't bones. They're enamel. Bone is a living tissue so it repairs itself. Enamel isn't so you have to tags care of it. But enamel is also what makes our teeth the strongest parts of our body, so it's a trade off. Either way make teeth less buff maintenance. I hate teeth.

like here’s the thing. there IS a well-known past of queer erasure in the historical field. and I wouldn’t suggest that it’s completely fixed now, don’t get me wrong

but things have changed since the 1950s, folks. I know more queer historians and GLAM workers (galleries, libraries, archives, museums) than straight ones- including me

furthermore, this joke has turned into an excuse to take the nuance out of historical narratives, in a way that really disturbs me

because no, we CANNOT just assume someone was queer just because they [never married/had certain interests/were affectionate with a same-gender friend/presented aesthetically in a way that was counter to their birth-assigned gender]. it’s a huge oversimplification of the vast diversity of human experience, which often totally ignores the broader context of a person’s life to force them into modern identity categories

there are many situations where we can comfortably say, “Okay, this person was what we’d now call queer.” but there are even more where we can’t

if a modern historian seems cagey about a person you think is “clearly gay,” it’s probably because there genuinely isn’t enough evidence to say one way or another. and so, to make a hard call would be to risk potentially misrepresenting that person- which is something we all really try to avoid doing

the tiresome joke not only erases queer historians and the real, important work being done in that sub-field. it also makes people think the only reason for not definitively saying a historical figure was queer is intentional homophobic erasure

which is a dangerous idea to enforce
