Sel embodying the toxic love bw are reduced too as if Nicks whole ancestors weren’t fucking slave owners 💔 crazy the one lacking compression isn’t me, it’s you with your ridiculous bias and lack of literacy. But no apparently Nick is perfect just because he’s “nice” to her. Did you not realize in the first book that Bree did threaten Sels position as he was a Merlin too and he was discriminated enough as a Merlin by the Order? The point is to parallel in some way and if you can’t see that then you’re better off not reading at all.

I'm tired of people in the Legendborn fandom acting like Nick has no personality or real struggle or anything. Like Nick struggles with anger issues Just As Much As Sel, but he copes in an entirely different way - he extricated himself from the Legendborn society and is constantly repressing and suppressing his anger to an unhealthy degree. He's suffered just as much trauma as Sel has, and that is what binds him, Bree, and Sel together thematically. He has incredible depth and is, in my opinion, a much more realistic, fresh, and interesting way of exploring feelings of self-hatred and perfectionism than a broody boy who throw trees around when he gets angry. I like Sel and I appreciate how he's well-written, but the entire point that Deonn is making (imo) is how similar Bree, Nick and Sel are - how self-destructive their coping mechanisms are and how they all need to heal. But that all goes out the window because *checks notes* Nick has blonde hair, and is generally a nice person? He has so much depth that's being skipped over because of surface appearance and that's really frustrating for me

puppy crushes are such an underrated relationship dynamic. I love a character that's admires another character so much they can't help but have a little crush about it, and the other character has no obligation to return the sentiment. I love when romantic tension/ yearning is resolved by evolution of character rather than obligatory fulfillment of the desire. I love romantic feelings that have to be grown out of for a character to mature.
