"Ground Swell” Devil's Tower National Monument, sits in a remote location of the Black Hills in northeastern Wyoming above the Belle Fourche River, rising 1267 feet above the river. Devils Tower was the first United States National Monument, established in 1906, by President Theodore Roosevelt. The iconic granite monolith is always a sight to be photographed, but weather can certainly add to the scenery as you can see here. In this photograph, I wanted to capture a number of elements within the scene. I was interested in having the scene framed from the four corners, capturing the Indian prayer flags that were present, getting a star flare of the sun, as well as of course the monument itself. Careful positioning allowed me to do just that.
