can i ask you to talk about the deltarune parallels? for a long time now deltarune has been very reminiscent of princess tutu to me and chapter 4 only strengthened that belief .. live laugh love princess tutu

where do i start.... princess tutu is very much like rgu for me in that it is The reference point when i think about metafiction, so comparing deltarune to it is natural. they're both, broadly, about trying to find your place in a story that's already written, only to discover that the story is a tragedy and having to now fight against it, even when it seems hopeless and everything is on a set path. they both involve a spooky narrator who hovers over everything and delights in seeing what they wrote play out, although drosselmeyer is much more present than gaster. theyre both heavy on themes of characters who are meant for something very specific and only valued for that finding fulfillment outside of it. and as ive already pointed out, the relationship between susie and ralsei reminds me very much of the one between fakir and ahiru.

i could probably go on forever about this, but i want to hone in one one aspect in particular that's more of a theory on deltarune's part. in princess tutu, it's very plainly pointed out that as ahiru is already a main character, rue has no place in the story anymore because the role of "girl" is already taken.

due to this, rue is forced into the role of rival and villainess, and back under the wings of her abusive father, if she wants to stay in mytho's life. it's the only option left for her. by that point she's already started making friends with ahiru, and her life seems quite comfortable, but she has to throw it all away.

i had the thought to compare that to susie and noelle. if im right and susie is The Girl in the normal route and noelle is The Girl in the weird route, then they sort of end up shoving each other aside narratively. if susie is the girl, then noelle gets relegated to side character love interest and damsel, she's not a permanent fixture of the adventuring party and so her development is seen as frivolous. if we fuck things up so noelle is the girl, then although susie's storyline in the dark world continues mostly as normal it no longer actually matters, and she becomes more isolated than ever. outside of their romance, susie and noelle cannot both be the focus at the same time, because there's never been room made for both of them in the prophecy. noelle is either the love that finds its way to the girl, or the girl. her only option to be a hero is to push susie out.

....that is, if im right about the nature of The Girl, of course. it's only a possibility
