Biostatistician here. When we say that Black people are more likely to have a particular bad thing happen to them, there are 4 possible explanations.

1) Heredity. It’s almost never heredity, but there are a couple examples.

2) Poverty, and the resulting difficulty accessing medical care, increased emotional stress, poorer diet, lack of access to safe exercise and recreational facilities, and greater exposure to polluted air, water, workplaces and homes.

3) Systemic racism that increases all of those problems beyond actual income poverty.

4) Medical racism. I’ve looked at reproduction particularly, and a major reason that Black people are more likely to die giving birth is that when they develop life-threatening complications, they’re less likely to be listened to and properly cared for in a timely manner. Yes, even when they have good insurance.

Holy shit please do not do this. This is the most disorganised disaster I’ve ever seen and all they’re going to do is get vulnerable people fired. Do not go on strike as an individual. Do not do not do not. The point of a strike is collective action to show the collective power of workers.

It is not enough to say that the NLRB has made vague gestures at showing that a non-union strike is theoretically possible. If you get fired illegally and you’re not part of a union, who’s going to pay for your employment tribunal? You? Unless you’re aware of how expensive tribunals can be and have that money set to the side, you’re opening yourself up to a world of hurt.

This is genuinely the most dangerous, nonsensical thing I’ve seen on this website in a long, long time. Do not do this. Do not mistake masturbatory individualistic action for a collective movement.

If you would like to find a way to seriously stick it to your bosses, speak to your coworkers, organise an actual union in your workplace (if you need pointers on this, don’t be afraid to reach out — I’ve done it before and would be happy to share pointers!). If you want public healthcare, get involved in any of the myriad campaigns for single payer going on. But do not, do not welcome unnecessary risk into your life like this.

At best, this is a well-intentioned but dangerously misguided social media activism move. At worst, this is an intentional disinformation campaign to undermine the labor movement. So, this hasn't crossed my dash yet. (Not blaming anyone, there is soooo much going on in the world and I'd also missed it in the noise).

There is currently a strike at Frito-Lay. in Topeka. These workers are striking because:

They were being forced to work 84 hour weeks. The company's best offer so far is a 60 hour cap. This is shit we fought for a century ago, people.

Their generous offer also includes a whole 4 percent wage increase...over the next 2 years. I'm not sure what COL is in Topeka, but... Well, it's better than the entire 77 cents they've apparently gotten in the last decade.

There's also a report that a worker literally collapsed and dropped dead on the line and the foreman's response was to make them move the body out of the way and put in a replacement. (However, this is unconfirmed and, of course, the company denies it).

There have been multiple OSHA violations at this plant over the last few years, including a forklift accident that's under investigation.

They've now been striking since July 5 but, of course, it only hit the national media yesterday.

So, why am I signal boosting this?

Because Frito-Lay is refusing to budge. They are attempting to make the excuse that union leadership agreed to the 60 hour work week and crappy pay cut...when union leadership only agreed to put it to a vote.

And this means that we need to put the thumbscrews on them. Remember, this is about 19th century style working conditions.

So, I'm calling on my followers to boycott Frito Lay's until the strike is involved.
