Hi havoc! Well, I was curious about something, do Dukemir and Jestyn not get along?

Something like that...

The short answer: Yes and no? Jestyn hates Dukemir. Duke is annoying, a push over and is way too soft for someone intended to be higher status. Jestyn finds Dukemir unworthy to be anywhere as high as duke much less 2nd in command to the throne. Dukmir actually doesn't mind Jestyn. Even makes attempts to be his friend despite getting hit in the head with Jestyn's axe in an arguement about Crownus. Duke doesn't blame Jestyn and blames himself for Jestyn's outburst.

"No. It's my fault... I kept PUSHIN. And pushing... until he snapped. I should have known better..."

It has been a while scence this incident tho. Duke doesn't mention it. Neither does Jestyn. But theirs silent tension and the two play pranks on eachother. Duke tries to mimic Jestyn's pranks against him in different ways because thats what he believes might make Jestyn like him. Dukemir wouldn't say he hates him but they aren't on the best terms either. Duke is the only one trying to fix that though.

How do you draw blood? I always make mine look like they got ketchup on them

It depends on what kind of blood we’re talking about. Not like I’m a specialist or anything but the color and consistency of blood depends on where it’s taken from (veins, arteries, organs), how it was applied (splatter, drip, soak), when it was applied (old blood goes black) and what kind of material it is applied to (human skin, scales, fur, fabric, etc). Now obviously I’m not known for photo-realistic rendering but it’s good to know the differences anyway.I am still experimenting with drawing blood but here are some different things I’ve done so far:

This is just your average blood stuff on skin, fabric and fur. I sometimes combine random splatter brushes but I almost always end up using kyletwebster‘s watercolor brushes. (And some other ones mostly from his megapack.)I do separate layers because older, dried blood turns dark with time while fresh blood still has a shine to it. I try to keep it balanced between clean edges (drops, pouring) and smeared parts. I think my style allows me to use both but for a cel-shaded look I’d do something like that last orc picture.^My favorite cartoony blood is definitely from Venture Bros. It’s nicely stylized and easy to animate.

Another thing I like drawing is dynamic blood squirts! As you can see on the second image, I draw the little triangle-shaped drips along an action line, complete with its own inside-shadows and shines. Then I select it part-by-part (not all at once!) and motion blur each part in the direction of the sprinkle.

And finally, here’s a thing I did last week. Blood bath!!Of course you don’t have to use a fancy grid to transform it accurately, you can just draw a quick perspective plane for yourself.This drawing was a quickie so I didn’t bother to add real details and shine to the blood but if you want to make it look chunkier you can thicken it by giving it a bit of a shadow.

honestly I don’t put together a lot of tutorials or pointers or things like that because all things considered I genuinely don’t think I am /that/ good at drawing robots/mecha/etcetera (I’d love to be better!) but I can give you a few things I try to keep in mind:

unfortunately, one of the most valuable skills you can have is at least a rudimentary knowledge of robotics and the inner workings of machines. after an understanding of human anatomy, being able to recall and eventually even freehand mechanisms like joints and believable machine guts will take you a long way, both in the planning and execution of robot art!

if that sounds scary, a great place to start is just getting your hands on a model—transformer, gundam, whatever works! (honestly I tend to prefer model kits and other non-transformers because, while the functional transforming elements can be informative, most model kit figures are attempting to look more “believable” or “screen accurate.” besides, assembling them yourself means you know exactly what’s in there!). pay special attention to how the parts move and how the mobility is limited by the mechanisms. You can bend the rules, but it helps the verisimilitude if your figures are bending in a plausibly mechanical way.

You can stick very rigidly (literally) to rudimentary machine anatomy (I believe people call g1 style transformers “stacking boxes”) but what I like to do, counterintuitively, is find ways to work around the limits of machining to make my bots feel more organic. Instead of a straightforward hinge joint, I’ll try to replicate the interlocking shape of an elbow, and include physical adductor muscles and other more organic-looking elements (here’s an example of some robot guts from a scrapped comic:)

my point being: don’t forget to get creative with it! find some references of artistic renditions of machine innards and use your understanding of their function to inform your drawing. your robots will stand out if you’re constructing them with an idea of how they work in mind!

I know this was more conceptual than direct, but I hope this helps regardless!!

Hi!! I love your art style that you pour into the HTB comic so much! It's fluid, vibrant, and easy to read/follow, just mesmerizing to look at!

I've got a question on how you color the comic pages. It must be tedious to color each turtle and background, and more time might be spent thinking what color to use, so a full-color comic like HTB is incredible.

I sometimes struggle in coloring lineart with gaps :"D Fill buckets sometimes leave tacky unfilled areas, so I wonder how you color your comic arts?

(Here is a pretty old draft that I never got posted. This is like... maybe a part 1 of 3 answers about colour. This one is just about Flats. Reminder i am not a teacher or a tutorial guy, just a person who makes art.)

Alrighty here we go. I have prepared probably way too long of an answer to this one. Once again, I use ClipStudio, this is based on that program, but other programs probably have similar tools.

To start a quick overview.

Flats

There are lots of ways to do this and many that are easier or more efficient, but these are just the methods that I use frequently with this comic. There are multiple because I change it up depending on my mood and how much time I have.

Method 0 - Fill Tool

The fill tool is great if you have art with smooth lines and no gaps. I do not! But here is a tutorial for fill tool anyway < youtube tutorial by someone else! yay! > and < another one >

The Select Tool (also known as the Magic Wand) is super efficient, but it becomes a waste of time if you have to constantly go in and fix things because your lineart is swiss cheese. I just fix the missing sections quickly with the lasso tool.

Flat Colours

My illustrations get a lot more layers and brushwork, but comics require more efficiency and speed. I keep the colouring pretty basic; usually just a Multiply layer for shadows and an Overlay for the lights.

Backgrounds still follow this, but with more gradients and brushwork.

Anyway, super long post is done! The answer to how I colour my comics is "Make Flats! Clip or Mask layers to the Flats! Add Flat Colours! Add Shadows/Light! Make adjustments! Done!"
