Hi PS, welcome back! We missed you, hope you feel better :) Just saw your answer to why Buaji never considered Shyam for Payal and it just made me sad. Between Buaji and Mamiji, I don't know who I found the most annoying. I know they added flavour to the show, and we discover their softer sides which endears us to them, but sometimes I just got so angry at them for their behaviour and sh*t stirring and interference. Might just be me though!
Hiyya!
Ngaw, thank you, this is super sweet!
I see what you're saying, but aunt characters are typically terrible in tellywood. They exist specifically to shit-stir and to interfere. And while I dislike saying that we should be grateful for what we got because it could've been much worse, I feel compelled out point out that both Madhumati and Manorama had strong character arcs.
Mami's character in particular just blows me away:
She never differentiates between Arnav and Aakash. Do you know how easy it would've been to show her trying to take Arnav down in favour of Aakash? To show a conniving aunt who was jealous of Arnav's success, who wanted her son to be the shining star of the household? After all, Aakash is the heir of the household, not Arnav, who is technically a Malik. And yet, Manorama -- for all her babbling about her one and only bitwa -- treats them the same. She never even brings up that she (a girl from a poor house!) sold her jewellery and broke her FD to give Arnav the seed money for his company -- it's Arnav who tells us.
She didn't want her daughter-in-law to go through what she did. I think it's easy to hate Manorama because she's so mean to Payal and so violently against Aakash's marriage. But she clearly states in the serial that if Aakash doesn't marry a Society Girl, her bahu will be bullied because of her background. Nani is still taunting and bullying Manorama after 25+ years of marriage. This is not something she wanted Aakash's wife to go through.
She was always defending against what she saw as trickery. Manorama genuinely believed that Arnav had been duped into marrying Khushi. She believed he was a victim of the Guptaâs money-grabbing scheme, continued to see him as a victim until he stood up for Khushi in front of Dadi. Thatâs when it clicked to Manorama that Arnav isnât a victim. Thatâs why she was so comfortable insulting Arnavâs wife in front of him - she thought she was helping. Thatâs why it was so easy for her to blame Khushi after Shyamâs first reveal - because she viewed the situation as Shyam, Anjali, and Arnav becoming victims of Khushi yet again.
Despite that, she worked with Khushi to find Arnav when he was kidnapped. Manorama didnât let her dislike of Khushi get in the way of rescuing Arnav. She can be petty and childish and downright weird, but she was reliable and resilient and trustworthy when it counted.
And we should give credit where itâs due for Bua-ji as well:
She learned to appreciate Khushi for who she was. She was terrible in the beginning, putting too much stock in blood and not enough in the bonds of the heart. She didnât see Khushi as family and expected her to be forever grateful about her adoption. But thatâs also how some people are about adopted children, Iâve seen so many ignorant and down-right cruel things said about Aarav by the very same folks who hate Bua-ji for how she treated Khushi. But Bua-ji changed as the serial went on and she came to see Khushi as her own person, to the extent where she supported Khushi in remarrying Arnav despite all the drama around their elopement.
She developed a genuine liking for Khushiâs choice in husband. No matter how it happened, Madhumati came to respect and love Arnav, even comparing him to her own husband at one point. She didnât try to get between them or break them up, and didnât even bad-mouth Khushi in front of (or to) Arnav. She respected Arnavâs atheism even though she didnât understand it, she didnât mind he snuck into her house at midnight, and encouraged the way Khushi stood up for her husband.
Like, I get it, these arenât exactly warm and cuddly individuals who were always in Khushiâs corner. They were headstrong, confident women who were at times selfish, and often wrong. But hereâs the thing. The traits that make these women ~unlikeable~ are exactly the traits people wish Payal and Khushi exhibited more. Anjali in particular is called all sorts of names for not doing what Madhumati and Manorama do: fight against injustice and protect herself and her own.
Just because that fight, the protection, wasnât extended to Khushi in the beginning doesnât make them bad characters. Bad people maybe, but not bad characters.
I'm over the moon with happiness because Viserys lost an eye, I'm like idiot, do you remember when your own son lost an eye and instead of consoling him and getting him justice you YELLED at him!!!
Guess What. KARMA IS A BITCH, SHE KEEP RECEIPTS đ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł
That was my immediate thought, I was like this is some beautiful KARMA. His body is rotting with karma by this point lmao.
You know what? Iâm not done defending Aemond.
Firstly, Vhagar is the most powerful dragon in the current world, is over 200+ years old, and is not property to be owned and passed on. She had several owners Visenya Targaryen, Baelon Targaryen, Laena Velaryon, and Aemond Targaryen. None of whom were parent child relationships. The entire concept that Vhagar was a birthright is laughable at best. Dragonâs are not hereditarily acquired or passed down. Rhaena Targaryen had no more claim to Vhagar than anyone else who could become a dragonrider.
I can understand that as a young child grieving the loss of her mother, Vhagar is much more valuable to Rhaena and she would assume she could make a claim to her. But in the end, she didnât. Vhagar wasnât naturally hers to inherit. Dragons are not property; they are powerful creature that must be earned. And Aemond did just that by being the bravest ten year old and gaining the respect and trust of the most impressive dragon in the show.
Secondly, Aemond was bullied by his shitty brother and (even shittier) cousins, and he proved them all wrong. I keep seeing Targ, or more specifically Rhaenyra, stans talk about how sweet and wonderful Rhaenyraâs kids are, but last I checked sweet kids donât bully and humiliate their cousin for the fact that they donât have an extremely important family gift. They know heâs embarrassed by it. They know it bothers him. And they decide it hilarious to further humiliate him by giving him a pig: âthe pink dreadâ. The kids are assholes, and Aemond proved his worth with his action of claiming Vhagar.
I already established he did nothing wrong by claiming a free dragon. But I think itâs even more important to show why he did it. Aemond was bullied and taunted by his cousins and brother for not having a dragon, and he decided to prove to himself and the kids who bullied him that he is brave enough and worthy enough to have a dragon. And not just any dragon, the greatest dragon. Itâs a power move to prove himself against his, and he did it masterfully.
Thirdly, Aemond didnât start the fight. That fight was started by Rhaena and Baela and joined by Jace and Luke. They all sought him out and started picking a fight with him. Rhaena is the one who made the fight first turn physical, and while I never agree with boys hitting girls, I also donât agree with girls hitting boys. Violence is violence. Rhaena charged at Aemond with intent to hurt him and he pushed her off. He defended himself. Baela then charges at Aemond and punches him, when all he did was push her sister off him. He swings back (not cool but like...you try getting beat up and just taking it). Then all hell breaks loose. The conclusion on this point is that Aemond didnât start shit. The other kids sought him out and started attacking him. Aemond simply defended himself.
Fourthly, and most importantly, the fight was completely and totally UNFAIR. Four against one is not a fair fight. All four kids circled him while he was on the ground and were mercilessly beating him. Again FOUR. Four kids, eight hands, punching him over and over. He pushed as many as he could off him and grabbed a rock for protection. And then when everyone stopped beating him, he lowered his hand with the rock. He clearly wasnât going to beat Luke with that rock.
The only time he goes to be violent again is when Jace pulls out a fucking KNIFE on him and goes to stab him over being called a bastard (which is 100% true. The boys are bastards). Only then, when Jace has a knife does Aemond go once again to defend himself with that rock. Only to then get his eye cut out by Luke. Where in that scene does Aemond have anything fair? Heâs the same age as these kids. He didnât instigate anything, he was unfairly being fought by four kids (and winning too), and he defended himself against a knife.
Essentially, Aemond Targaryen is a child, and really didnât do much wrong in this situation. He was bullied and harassed by his shithead brother and cousins for not having a dragon. He proved himself by gaining the mightiest dragon, which was his right as Vhagar was free to claim and isnât hereditary property. He was sought out by the same shithead cousins and the Velaryon girls who instigated a physical fight with him and then all ganged up on him and beat him. And then he had his eye cut out for defending himself against a kid who pulled a knife on him.
If you watched any of that scene and thought âYeah. This kid deserved to be beaten and mutilated by his bullies for taking a free dragonâ...then you need help. That scene was disgusting and unfair, and Aemond was right.
Elden Ring - Scenery [6/?]
Hi, If you don't mind me asking, you wrote in the comment section of one your posts (kgf chapter one -thoughts) that you have a scene by scene analysis for rocky/reena. By any chance did you made it a post?. I looked in your blog but didn't find it. Thank you
Heyo, hope you are doing well.
So, I believe I had posted that I would be writing that in the near future, hopefully. I'm waiting to watch part 2 which comes out on 27th here.
Let's hope that I clear out my schedule in time so I can write that and put it out for you guys. You can enjoy the fic, Ninnalle Uliyuve Naanu, in the meantime.
See ya around!
Thank you for replying. The thing is when I first saw the film I didn't paid much attention because I thought she was a generic love intrest. But on rewatch i understood how subtle and strong her characterization was. (That they randomly teleported in midst of the movie to a sceneric european country to film a romantic song is the one of the biggest plus point of KGF). She is strong character, especially in the second part. (as strong as she could be in a macho movie like KGF,it could have been better, though). I just wanted to know more about her and the rocky/reena because that's one hell of a pair. I'll definitely read the fic. It's always a pleasure to see fellow indians around. đđđ
K.G.F Chapter 1 - The ultimate thirst post Thoughts
The first thought that comes to my head is this man is bled like a pig and still there is a fire as undead as that of the sun, simmering in his pupils. Poetic cinema, indeed. (Also, I have it bad for thicc bleeding men. @awkwardqueenmel you know it. Take pointers for K.G.F gifsets btw. )
First shot of his mother giving birth with the parallels to the kgf gold rocks. There's so much poetry in that one scene and just the interaction between kid rocky and his momma. There's love, life and she is such a giver it hurts to watch her. Physically just hurts. And the mom is evidently depicted as a low key goddess we witness, at the altar of sacrifice. Or down south we call it, "Amma sentiment". I'm buying it tho, combined with the powerful music, you get to feel all that love coursing through your nerves.
Okay so, HOT DAYUMMM SON, first question. Why does he look like that? EFFECTIVELY GIVING ME A BRAIN ANEURYSM.
Not this being the single most sexiest thing he does before crunching bones as if induced with the super-soldier serum (Yogi Baba' words, not mine) and I'm buying it. I'm totally buying that possibility. I'm so tempted to write a fic where he is an Indian super-soldier assigned to covert ops and think of the possibilities!! And it will be super slutty, mind you.
Bhai breaks his hand because he wasted liquor and then uses it to smoothen those erratic locks..not Rocky being soooo extra extra..me likey this already. Also note the eyefucking, raw at max.
There's always an irksome feeling when the south-film based female characters are on the extreme side of things most of the time, either she is too nice/dumb (loosu herione) or too stupid or too bitchy. To a point where there is no middle ground at all and the creators somehow find a dumbass reason to justify the "hero's" actions, like 'oh she needed to understand what her role was in his life' and she transforms into a different entity altogether. In turn losing the every essence of her character.
Honestly, I feel like Reena was handled with a certain subtlety that made me want to write/explore her character further or was it just me? Yes, this is Rocky's story and yes she is a part of it but what is her tale.. what are her thoughts. I want to get deeper into that.
She appears for the shortest time yet she leaves an impact with the viewer. Here, you can see that she's in eternal pain masked with her "wild girl" attitude not so much that it screams, "Rocky, save me." But she clearly wishes for something else, yearns for something more she knows what. How can you expect anything from life when you are engaged to Kamal, ew. đ€Šââïžđ€Šââïž
And just when this "loafer" appears out of nowhere, drunk af and begins to tease her for only one reason - HE IS THE BIGGEST CHAMDI SAALA. đ€Ł
She likes a challenge and the once dying embers are lit with fire unbeknownst to her, so much so that even when she frowns or is aggravated by him, she's constantly adapting to his reactions to her and generally just how he handles her father's men. It felt like the ancient dance of courting women with brute strength and Rocky's just going at it, like his fists made of stone and like he needs to prove to her that he's worthy only through his actions.
The man loves a challenge too and at first, he's grown up on the notion of having the "best brands" and how he transmutes into a brand himself. So, it's only natural that he sees her as a coveted prize first. I want to believe this more than "love at first" because if we know Rocky, we know he always aspires to have the best in everything. And Reena is exactly that, completely out of his league, Rajendra Desai's daughter, old money and she's untouchable. He thrives on that shit. Hell, he lives to breathe that challenge. And that is how I believe it began for them.
Same goes for the club scene where she challenges him, yet again, this time she probably wanted to poke the bear a little further, to really see if he was made of sterner stuff. I love love how she merely pleads with her eyes, it's barely a flash and that's a little before he clears out, dramatically looking for a matchstick which makes you go, "Oh not Rocky being a drama bitch, for sure."
I kinda enjoyed it far more than necessary. Followed by more preachy drama, courtesy of Rocky. đ€Ł (Side note: If this guy doesn't die in the mines, he's surely gonna die of lung cancer. He basically thrives in nicotine, this one đ€Šââïž)
I see what the creators did here and me not perceiving a word out of that man's mouth. That's it, get him all wet. Once again reminding myself the reason I chose to watch this movie, properly, in one goddamn sitting. Or at least try to watch it without skipping out scenes which is what happened the first time. Thanks for nothing Colours Tamil and your numerous ass commercials.
Not my ovaries exploding along with the chants of "Malik" in the background, clearly the creators have a secret agenda to impregnate women with this single-handed visual. My manzz be thicc af. Crimson bastard. đđđđ
Okay so is it even legal to pop a bullet into his mouth and why is it so goddamn hot? Not me thirsting from frame to frame. I'm useless now.
Rocky Bhai marches off to El Dorado/Narachi blessed with the power of his mother's love or like Chacha likes to say, "Dua hai uske sar pe." He's either Harry Potter or the Winter Soldier. What's with that knife flipping damnnn and don't forget the mask. Ziddhi ziddhi, toofan, indeed. đđđ Especially with the goggles which takes you back to the winter soldier sequence on the bridge.. 'Who the hell is, Bucky?! Mera naam ROCKY HAI. ROCKY. You can almost hear it. Almost. Even the music feels an awful lot like the winter soldier theme.
Right the from the moment he enters the bowels of hell, a.k.a Narachi, there's an aura of power that engulfs him, changing him every second despite the trials that test the very core of humankind. He emerges looking none the worse and strategizes instead, focusing on the mission. Still, you can see the inner turmoil, as he effortlessly has a mask on, simmering rage set deep in his dark eyes and he manages a few sentences, here and there. That's when you get tears in your eyes as you navigate within Narachi with through the eyes of Rocky. Damn, this is..EFFING poetry.
And yes, getting a bit of Baahubali vibes with the whole "Dheera" avatar. Renewing his character with yet another feather in his cap.
Not me simping for the parallels with Reena at home Vs. Rocky in Narachi.
Goosebumps break out when he arrives into the arena and the whole "Baahubali Baahubali" moment happens with the people and he gloriously kills the tattoo goon. I see what you did sir, your weapon of choice did not go unnoticed. And generally him being that loveable rascal at the same time he's a strategist. Even though towards the end it had to be a culmination of all the events that had occurred and we needed to witness the breaking point, he stuck to his agenda. He wasn't pretending to be this hero right from the start. He's a smart smartass who likes to play dumb, most of the time just to throw off his opponents and then before they know it - Boom, too late bitches.
And finally, this iconic scene we have relived a million times before we had to prepare ourselves for chapter 2. Goddamit, this was it, this was everything. There's a thousand things going on and he sticks to his plan and he's right on top of it. Mission accomplished. Boom.
Phew. There. Done. This is not some comprehensive breakdowns people do here but merely a major thirst-post for crazy people who share this vibe.
And if you still haven't watched the movie, I don't know what else to say to you. Your loss. đ„Č
I'm taking a break.
it's cold out there, reblog to give a trans man a cup of soup

What we know that Dany knows of her ancestors, dragonlore and history
As I was rereading ASOIAF, I made it my goal to compile all* the book passages demonstrating either certain key attributes of Daenerys Targaryen (e.g. that sheâs compassionate and empathetic) or aspects of hers that are usually overblown (e.g. that sheâs violent and ambitious). Â Doing such a task may seem exaggerated, but Iâd argue itâs not, for many, many misconceptions about Dany have become widespread in light of the showâs final seasonâs events (and even before).
It must be acknowledged that it can be tricky to reference, say, ADWD passages to counter-argument how she was depicted in season eight (which allegedly follows ADOS events). Dany will have had plenty of character development in the span of two books. However, whatever happens to Dany in the next two books, I would argue that there is more than enough material to conclude that her show counterpart was made to fall for flaws that she (for the most part) never had and actions that she (for the most part) would never take.
Another objection to the purpose of these lists is that Game of Thrones is different from A Song of Ice and Fire and should be analyzed on its own, which is a fair point. However, the show is also an adaptation of these books, which begs the questions: why did they change Danyâs character? Why did they overfocus on negative traits of hers or depicted them as negative when they werenât supposed to be or gave her negative traits that were never hers to begin with? Another fact that undermines the show=/=books argument is that most people think that the showâs ending will be the booksâ, albeit only in broad strokes and in different circumstances. As a result, peopleâs perception of Dany is inevitably influenced by the show, which is a shame.
Show!Danyâs downfall in season eight is a great study in how powerful women can be demonized for a variety of reasons. One of the most blatant ones, I would argue, is that, throughout the seasons, the showâs writers downplayed or stripped Dany of almost all the characteristics of her book counterpart (compassion, self-awareness, intelligence, frugalness, lightheartedness, etc) in order to paint her as a regal and stoic Strong Female Character only to have that status turn back against her in the end (i.e., key moments where we were supposed to be awed by her strength, like her burning of the khals, have had their meanings retconned to signal her heel-turn). Thatâd bothered me in previous seasons, but I never thought theyâd use their mischaracterization of her to deliberately portray her in an overly negative light (especially because most of her scenes were designed for us to root for her or see her as triumphant), so I tried not to think much about it. But then, in season eight, sheâs no longer determined, sheâs ambitious. She no longer takes action, sheâs reckless and violent. She no longer cares about her people, she only wants their devotion and compliance. Sheâs no longer a product of the Westerosi pseufeudalistic system, sheâs a tyrant. Sheâs no longer idealistic, sheâs deluded. She doesnât want to conquer only Westeros, she wants to conquer the entire world. Sheâs no longer focused, sheâs mad. As if the evidence for these accusations didnât primarily come from material that had already oversimplified Dany to begin with. As if it didnât come from material whose meaning/significance was retroactively changed to support their writing of her heel-turn. Dany was never just a Strong Female Character in the books, but the showâs writers often reduced her to that aspect so sheâd be their feminist icon and then changed it in the last minute so weâd despise her in the end for the very status that once made us be on her side.
I hope these lists can be useful for whoever wants to find book passages to defend Danyâs character in analysis or even conversations.
*Well, at least all the passages that I could find.
Also, people may interpret certain passages differently and then come up with a different collection of passages, so Iâm not arguing that this list is completely objective (nor that there could ever be one).
Also, some passages have been cut short according to whether they were, IMO, relevant to the specific topic of the list theyâre in, so the context surrounding them may not always be clear (always read the books!). Many of them appear in different lists, sometimes fully cited, sometimes not.
Here goes the lists of book passages featuring the key moments of Danyâs main relationships (so far).
Dany and her dragons
Dany and Jorah
Dany and Drogo
Dany and Hizdahr
Dany and Missandei
Dany and Viserys
Dany and Daario
Dany and Barristan
#I definitely disagree that Danaerys was treated unfairly with the exception that the last seasons were terrible#to basically everyone#I do think itâs highlighted in the books that Dany has good intentions but a lot of entitlement#she is literally the epitome of the road to hell is paved with good intentions#well one interpretation of that anyway#I think even the books indicate from almost the beginning that sheâs gonna fail#because her entire quest is based off of the notion that she believes sheâs entitled to the throne#instead of her actually wanting to do the work to break the corruption of monarchy all together#if her goal wasnât based off of a really entitled starting point#I think Iâd be angry about her destination#but she doesnât change that motivation#even if itâs surrounded by wanting to help people#her end goal is to rule#from day one#and people who seek power really donât often deserve it#which I believe is a point GRRM tried to make#but this is a good resource for Dany characterisations
Iâm sorry, but the things you just said are either not true or based on double standards and Iâm going to counterargue because you left those tags in the reblog.
1) Dany believing that she has a claim to the Iron Throne doesnât make her any more entitled than the Starks believing that they have the right to rule over the North. None of them have a righteous claim because the problem is the feudal system, not simply a few selected individuals. You should know that the Starks only have control over the North because their ancestors spent thousands of years waging war against rival families and driving away and killing the Children of the Forest. Despite those atrocities, Ned and his family still enjoy the lands, titles and privileges that came with all those conquests and bloodshed. Heck, even Robbâs war causes a lot of raping and pillaging in the Riverlands during the main story, which certainly isnât justified despite the sympathetic reasons why heâs fighting (daddyâs death).
The fact that Dany is fighting for the Iron Throne doesnât make her any more morally grey than the Starks, even though the show portrayed her as if she was. She may be claiming a larger part of the pizza, but again, the Starksâ ancestors also killed a lot of people to get to where they are. If she should have to give up power and give her vassals independence, so should the Starks.
2) Where is the textual evidence that Dany is entitled in the books? I want you to show me actual passages of this, because I made these lists precisely because I think that thatâs a mischaracterization that the show popularized. If we judge Dany based on the standards of her pseudomedieval society instead of applying modern standards to her (and conveniently only her), she canât really be considered entitled at all. Not any more than the Starks. Time and again, Dany reminds herself and others of her self-imposed duties as queen:
âA queen must listen to all. The highborn and the low, the strong and the weak, the noble and the venal. One voice may speak you false, but in many there is always truth to be found.â (ASOS Daenerys I)
~
âWhy do the gods make kings and queens, if not to protect the ones who canât protect themselves? [âŠ] Justice ⊠thatâs what kings are for.â (ASOS Daenerys III)
~
A queen belongs not to herself, but to the realm. (ADWD Daenerys IV)
~
A queen belongs not to herself but to her people. (ADWD Daenerys V)
~
A queen must know the sufferings of her people. (ADWD Daenerys VI)
~
A queen must listen to her people, Dany reminded herself. (ADWD Daenerys VI)
~
âA queen loves where she must, not where she will.â (ADWD Daenerys VII)
~
She would rather have drifted in the fragrant pool all day, eating iced fruit off silver trays and dreaming of a house with a red door, but a queen belongs to her people, not to herself. (ADWD Daenerys IX)
Time and again, itâs made clear that Dany uses her power to help marginalized people, in a world where most lords wouldnât have cared about them (even the good ones like Ned and Edmure only care about and help lowborn people if theyâre related or were born in the same region or have an oath of fealty). She is even singled out by the author as the one ruler that wants equality for everyone. So, not only is Dany doing nothing more problematic than the Starks by fighting for the Iron Throne, she goes beyond what any of them did by ending slavery and doing her best to rule Meereen to bring peace to people who are not connected to her at all and without any personal gains. She never seeks power because she wants special treatment. Where is this entitlement? And why should she be given the burden to âbreak the corruption of monarchyâ when the same isnât asked of the Starks?
3) I donât think âthe road to hell is paved with good intentionsâ describes Dany well at all. That phrase is used to describe people who do nothing despite meaning well (1, 2, 3). Dany is the opposite - despite making mistakes (which only led to dire consequences because of the slavers, not her), she took action to help the disenfranchised, and that will always mean more than inaction.
4) People like Dany who seek power are the ones willing to make social changes in the first place, which is why she did a lot more than any of the Starks. This idea that âpeople who seek power really donât often deserve itâ is just crap to favor the status quo.
I donât get it⊠If youâre willing to discuss, Iâm up for it, but your comments defeat the whole purpose of these lists, which were created to challenge all the misconceptions you just listed!

If you had to choose a travel companion among your characters, who would it be?
GRRM: (Laughs) It would depend on the destination and what he wanted to do. If, for example, it were simply about sightseeing, seeing landscapes and seeing places, Iâd take Tyrion Lannister with me probably. I think his acid comments would go very well at certain times. He is a character who likes to get to the point and he would surely have many interesting things to comment on. If it were a more romantic getaway, I would take Daenerys Targaryen because, in addition to being very funny, she is a very beautiful woman. (x)

Miguel Sapochnik: Emiliaâs really nice. And she cares. Sheâs a whole bunch of things that Dany isnât. (Game of Thrones | Season 8 Episode 5 | Game Revealed)
~
Emilia Clarke: There was a number of times I was like, âWhy are you giving me that note?â While I am quite consistently a âHow can I help?â kind of person, there were a few moments where I was like, âDonât tell me what to do with my girl. I know what to do!â Itâs like Daenerysâs calling card became cold expressionlessness. I always wanted to infuse that with some humanity because no oneâs consistently that. I would sometimes fight back a little: âI get that she has to be steely and unforgiving and a powerful force. But in this moment sheâs also a goddamn human being. So Iâm going to give you that and I really pray that you take that in the edit.â (Fire Cannot Kill a Dragon: Game of Thrones and the Official Untold Story of the Epic Series)
People write this:
Iâd disagree with the idea that she is typicalâŠmainly because she isnât the heroine, and her story is one fantastic inversion of the heroâs journey. I love Danyâs storyline for what itâs doing. Unfortunately, many people donât see it. I also love Jonâs story, especially as this wonderful parallel to Danyâs, except where Danyâs experiences only heighten her sense of âspecialnessâ, Jonâs experiences are constantly forcing him to see and even âlive inâ other peopleâs perspectives. Danyâs arc is about hubris and upholding this idea that she alone deserves unbridled power, while Jonâs is about humility and seeing the inherent value in other peopleâs lives. He pays dearly for his mistakes, especially when he tries to push his friends away and take on the burden of leadership alone (but thatâs getting way ahead of what I want to talk about today).
Almost immediately, Danyâs chapters are infused with the language of âspecialnessâ. She is the âblood of the dragonâ, she is the khaleesi, a princess, a queenâŠand almost immediately, Jon Snow is disabused about any such notions he may have had, even as a bastard.
-
Two chapters later, Dany is a married woman and riding in Khal Drogoâs khalasar. While she is miserable at the start (and rightly so. She is sold and raped. Iâm in no way pretending that Danyâs life doesnât start out horrible. Itâs far more horrible than Jonâs start to life), she is in a position of power for the first time ever, and lets just say she takes to it just fine.
The point about âinversion of the heroâs journeyâ is accurate to an extent because Dany has villainous tropes (such as being born of incest, associated with dragons which are not usually positively depicted, exploring her sexuality with a lover of her own choosing, and more) in her arc, but that her actions and intent go against the trappings of a villain says more to me than simply using this term without exploring what it means for her character. But otherwise, her heroâs journey is pretty straightforward for people who understand what this journey can incorporate. Not a simplistic conclusion of âtaking to powerâ but perhaps enjoying a freedom she hasnât been given the chance to experience in a long time, if ever truly she had, with a brother like Viserys curtailing her instincts and berating (really abusing) her for expressing her wishes.Â
Itâs redundant to mention that this position of power is rather empty and she only has as much power as Drogo allows her (The limits to this so called power are not even properly spelled out. Dany figures them out by gauging Drogoâs moods and eventually understands how much she can push him and when she should stop in both their personal interactions and publically). I donât know how many times it has to be repeated that this power is tied to how much Drogo is satisfied with her sexually and her childbearing capabilities and how unpredictable the whole situation is considering the khal could share his wife with his bloodriders. That he does not is unusual in itself.
Again, identifying and drawing strength from repeating âI am blood of the dragonâ and extracting as much respect as she can from âI am khaleesiâ is not the same as âspecialnessâ. Let us not forget that one of these moments is when Jorah is telling her she cannot save all of the Lhazareen women.
âYou cannot claim them all, child,â Ser Jorah said, the fourth time they stopped, while the warriors of her khas herded her new slaves behind her.âI am khaleesi, heir to the Seven Kingdoms, the blood of the dragon,â Dany reminded him. âIt is not for you to tell me what I cannot do.â Across the city, a building collapsed in a great gout of fire and smoke, and she heard distant screams and the wailing of frightened children.
(So this should be an indication that maybe this might not be misguided fanon projection but a moment of assertion to stop rape)
âKhal Drogo commanded them to keep me safe,â Dany replied uncertainly, âbut if he dies âŠâ She touched the swell of her belly. âI donât understand. Why should we flee? I am khaleesi. I carry Drogoâs heir. He will be khal after Drogo âŠâ
Here she is unsure because typically, Rhaego should be the next khal. But he is not even born. Jorahâs words make her âuncertainâ. The Dothraki follow strength (aka not a baby or a woman) and would sooner kill both her and Rhaego. This does not come from a place of believing in her âspecialnessâ.Â
There are further uses of this phrase that can similarly be contextualized.
And then they think:
Iâm all about critiquing how effective the author is in this endeavor, but I have no interest in reading blind refusals to engage with the writing on the wall when it comes to Daenerys. The writing has been there since book one.
It isnât subtle.
It isnât unknowable.
Itâs pretty fucking obvious.
If people want to ignore those themes and her very clear arc and enjoy the books at the most surface level, ignoring or bypassing things that make them uncomfortable or donât vibe with how theyâve decided to view certain characters, that is their choice (âŠ)
that everyone else is ignoring themes and enjoying the books at the most surface level. I should have mentioned: they ship Jonsa and are offended by people writing about Danyâs feelings because apparently we âexcuse her actionsâ.
the tale of Aragorn and Arwen is a horror story, or a cautionary tale at least.
Every time I reread the Tale of Arwen and Aragorn I thinkâŠwhether Tolkien intended it or not, this is a horror story about people casting Arwen into the role of LĂșthien, a tragedy about someone being compared to a heroic ancestress because of her looks so many times that she might start to believe itâ but in the end finds out that she is nothing like her. And she finds out too late.
The first meeting of Aragorn and Arwen is not about Arwen at all, but her ability to look like a figure out of song, which allows Aragorn to cast himself as a heroic Beren figure (and people love those who allow them to imagine being something more than they are);
For a moment Aragorn gazed in silence, but fearing that she would pass away and never be seen again, he called to her crying, TinĂșviel, TinĂșviel! even as Beren had done in the Elder Days long ago. Then the maiden tured to him and smiled, and she said: âWho are you? And why do you call me by that name?â And he answered: âBecause I believe you to be indeed LĂșthien TinĂșviel of whom I was singing. But if you are not she, then you walk in her likeness.â âSo many have said,â she answered gravely. âYet her name is not mine.âÂ
And Arwen has grown up with the story of Beren and LĂșthien. As long as she can remember people have seen LĂșthien in her.Â
Aragorn falls in love at first sight; but not in love with Arwen, not really, because he doesnât know her. He falls in love with the image of LĂșthien while singing of her; he falls in love with the idea of himself as heroic as Beren, too. Nothing is mentioned of Arwen having feelings for him at this point. It is not at all love at first sight as it was for B&L. In fact, Elrond says she likely thinks he is below her, not just in age or experience but in lineage. I donât think he would lie, despite his lack of enthusiasm;
But as for Arwen the Fair, Lady of Imladris and of LĂłrien, Evenstar of her people, she is of lineage greater than yours, and she has lived in the world already so long that to her you are but as a yearling shoot beside a young birch of many summers. She is too far above you. And so, I think, it may well seem to her. But even if it were not so, and her heart turned towards you, I should still be grieved because of the doom that is laid on us.â
Luthien did most certainly did not care about Berenâs âgreat lineageââ which was not really much of one yet at the time, at least not one to impress the half-Ainu daughter of Thingol, who claimed to be King of all Beleriand. If there is any reason for their love at all (other than high doom)â it is maybe Berenâs personality. He kills no animal. He tries to be good in a very harsh world. He was about 32 years old, and unlikely to ever be King of anything.

Thank you. Something was very troubling to me when I read their Tale. Thank you for very accurately summing it up.
anyway glad I got that out of the way, yes I think Arwen/Aragorn was a disastrous Beren Luthien roleplaying session that ended horribly, Elrond was right to discourage it because he knew very well his daughter was nothing like Luthien, hope Arwen at least gets lots of hugs from Elros in the void or wherever it is that human souls hang out in Arda until the world reboots.
Just wanted to tell you all a little story. My dad was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer in august last year and was given 3-6 months to live. He died january 4th, this year.
Anyway, just before christmas, I wanted to give my dad at least a few moments of joy. My dad loved Game of Thrones so I searched up George R.R. Martin âs email address, and sent him an email explaining the situation and asking if he could reply with a few words of encouragement for my dad. I knew it was a long shot, because even on his website he states that he canât reply to all the fan emails he gets.Â
Two days later, I had an email back from him. He was wondering if my dad had read âThe world of ice and fireâ a history book of his world. I said I donât think he had, and he offered to send us an inscribed copy of that book. Not too long after, the book arrived. I was expecting a normal sized book, but what we got was huge. I was so excited to give it to my dad, and I couldnât have gotten a better reaction. In all my years of life, I have NEVER seen him that happy. He even made himself get up to give me a hug. Iâm so glad I could arrange that for him. Whether GRRM has assistants writing his email replies or he does it himself, whoever is at the other side of that email address, is an amazing kind hearted person. Iâve emailed back and forth with him a bit, and let him know a while ago that my dad had passed, and he sent his condolences. I honestly canât thank him enough, the expression on my dads face when he opened the book is something that will stay with me forever. What was written in the book was: âSome dreams of fire, to help keep winter at bay.â with his signature. Iâm truly grateful that man exists.
DAENERYS TARGARYEN APPRECIATION MONTH 2021Â
Day 8Â - Prophecies and visions: Some of the main clues showing that Daenerys is Azor Ahai/Prince that was Promised
âNo one ever looked for a girl,â he said. âIt was a prince that was promised, not a princess. Rhaegar, I thought ⊠the smoke was from the fire that devoured Summerhall on the day of his birth, the salt from the tears shed for those who died. He shared my belief when he was young, but later he became persuaded that it was his own son who fulfilled the prophecy, for a comet had been seen above Kingâs Landing on the night Aegon was conceived, and Rhaegar was certain the bleeding star had to be a comet. What fools we were, who thought ourselves so wise! The error crept in from the translation. Dragons are neither male nor female, Barth saw the truth of that, but now one and now the other, as changeable as flame. The language misled us all for a thousand years. Daenerys is the one, born amidst salt and smoke. The dragons prove it.â (AFFC Samwell IV)

The whole point of the scene in A Game of Thrones where Daenerys hatches the dragons is that she makes the magic up as she goes along; she is someone who really might do anything. â GRRM
