I actually did a report on this last year! The substance is called perfluorocarbon and because of its unique nature, it can hold enough oxygen inside of it for you to breathe it. You can breathe safely while inside it, but sometimes the transition from breathing in the perfluorocarbon and the air can be painful or uncomfortable as your lungs try to push the liquid out of them. In Dan Brown’s book The Lost Symbol, the process of reverting back to breathing the air can feel like being birthed.

FACT:

This liquid is used in modern torture. It is similar to water boarding. A victim is placed in a small completely dark box. The box is then filled with the liquid. The victim thinks they are drowning as they breath the liquid in. Most pass out from fear at this point or they just sit there in the liquid in pitch black, apparently breathing ‘water’. Often it leads to the thought that they are in fact dead. It is completely terrifying. Then the box is opened and they are violently pulled from it. As said before the transition from liquid to air is none too pleasant. You might be told something like, they resuscitated you and to tell them what you know or they will “drown” you again.

You can “drown” someone and be sure that they won’t be harmed

Okay so it’s 5am I’m home from the night shift and I’m not crashing yet LET’S DO THIS

has a shitty relationship with garbage father who prefers the kid who’s more like him, leading to Zuko to repeatedly try and fail to act the “right” way so his father will love him until he realises that it’s his father’s problem and Zuko is a good person the way he is, and stops trying to change himself (after shooting the bastards own lightning back at him I mean the gay drama I love my son)

his literal crime date with Jet

his date with that girl in Ba Sing Se really showed that he doesn’t seem to see girls in a romantic light. he has no idea she’s flirting with him, is pleasant in a very unromantic way, does nice things like light up the fountain for her and gives her a coupon for the tea shop, but balks at kissing her (I know he said the date was nice but I don’t think that included the kiss, I think he just liked doing something normal for once and hanging out with a nice person his age)

his relationship with Mai is just so… off. like whenever they’re not fighting Zuko acts in a way that’s very reminiscent of how he acted in Book 2 when he was pretending to be happy in the tea shop for Iroh’s sake. It felt like a front he was putting on (I could go on but it would turn into ship hate and that’s not what this blog is about)

This! This is why I start cursing like a sailor the minute someone brings up aaaallll the things we the people can do to stop climate change.

Spoiler: it’s nothing. Oh, sure, you can recycle your trash, but that doesn’t mean much when it all ends up getting burned anyway because our economy doesn’t have anywhere near the capacity to deal with the sheer mass of trash, and no interest in doing so. Like, “sure, our company could switch to environmentally friendly packaging, but that’d mean we’d have to change things and it might cost us a whole cent more per article and that’s just not viable you know, so sorry.”

Or, yes, you can absolutely bike to work instead of driving, but your CO2 emissions are nothing against what big companies blow into the atmosphere every second. Nothing.

Or, yes, you can absolutely grow bee-friendly plants in your yard, but that won’t save them.

By all means, be environmentally conscious! In fact, I strongly encourage you to be! But let’s be real here, our individual footprints on this planet aren’t what’s killing it. Big Industry is.
