I came across this special folio of poets from Gaza published by peripheries (an annual publication by Harvard Divinity School’s Center for the Study of World Religions). It was published in 2021 and edited by Tayseer Abu Odeh and Mosab Abu Toha. You can read the seven poets here.

i'm literally hooked on poetry. even on days where i can't sit down to read a book, i try to consume at least one poem a day bc it keeps me sane. it actually does. i recommend signing up to one poem a day newsletters--those have been a game changer for me. as for recommendations, my favorite poems change every week, but current faves (whose authors i regularly go back to/are a good starting point) would be:

"Kolya, I really do appreciate you trying to give us some time off, but what I would appreciate even more is if you would actually tell me what we're doing," you huffed as Nikolai led you and the rest of your little family up an impossibly steep hill.

He laughed before pulling out an almost ancient set of keys out of his pocket. "But where would be the fun in spoiling the surprise, my dear?"

"Nikolai."

"Oh come on, take a guess, my love." He jiggled the keys in front of his face and if your kids wouldn't be watching you wouldn't have hesitated to wipe that self-satisfied grin off his face. "I put off all my meetings for today, I exploit my position as Sturmhond to whisk us away to this lovely little island, and now I just pulled out a stack of keys that's probably older than my own grandmother - may she rest in peace. What could I possibly have in mind for us?"

You only raised your eyebrows at his jokes, but eventually relented when a small, ivy-overgrown cottage came into view.

"It's a cottage my mother bought some years ago. Well, one of the cottages she bought. She wanted me to have it should I ever have a family of my own and look where I am now."

The thought of your mother-in-law buying an array of cottages in the middle of nowhere made you giggle a bit, but you pushed that thought to the side in favour of the scene playing out in front of you.

Nikolai lifted your youngest daughter up into the air and put her onto his shoulders, all while she was giggling and laughing like she had gone mad.

"I have a whole day planned for us, love. Don't you worry."

Ideal Idea of a First Date - Definitely attending a festival or carnival of some sorts! I love strolling around to see different carts and markets and the music and performance!! since we never really heard much about shu han in the books, i took the mid-autumn/mooncake festival as inspiration for this! (it's only very loosely based on it and i don't mention the history, so if you're interested in the festivities, please look them up, it's so interesting to read about!!)

“I cannot believe that the one time Nikolai is dragging us off to Shu Han is also one of the days when the whole country chooses to abandon their houses and fill up the streets,” you mumbled, more to yourself than to anyone else.

Tolya only chuckled in response, a few loose strands of hair falling lazily onto his forehead. Both of you wore a somewhat traditional robe that Nikolai had gotten all of you to blend into the crowds, but only Tamar and Tolya really managed to pull it off. You still had to admit that the fabrics looked more than stunning, especially in the warm red light emitting from all the paper lanterns around you.

“We should be glad that Nikolai didn’t intend on going through with that plan of his today.” He whispered back, almost having to lean down towards you so that you could hear. “We wouldn’t have a chance getting through the streets without causing some sort of commotion.”

“At least something,” you chuckled. “As frustrating as our favourite privateer’s planning skills are, I’m still excited to see what this whole festival is about.”

He raised his brows in amusement. “Have you never heard about the Moon Festival?”

“Tolya, I grew up in Ravka and spent my entire life cooped up at the Little Palace, studying manuscripts older than that hag Baghra, do you really think I know what kind of celebrations the Shu have?”

“Oh dear, then I have a lot to show you.” With that, he grabbed hold of your arm and pulled you face-first into the crowd.

There was so much going on and you barely had time to catch a proper breath before the next impression was basically thrust upon you. 

First, he led you to what looked like a parade passing through the streets. People dressed in colourful hanfus and intricate costumes danced amidst the onlookers, laughing and singing songs that you had never heard before. A few of them held up a giant puppet of a bright green dragon, making it dance and writhe over their heads. It was a stunning display of colours and music alike, and you couldn’t help but gape at the performers as they walked past you.

“Dragon Dance,” he stated matter-of-factly. “It’s a tradition as old as time. They used to only do it during times of drought, because the dragons are associated with rain here, so they hoped that this dance would bring us a prosperous harvest.”

“It’s most definitely a stunning tradition.”

“You’d be surprised about how many stunning traditions the Shu have other than this.” He smiled, letting his eyes wander over the parade one last time before offering you a hand. “Are you hungry? I think I know something that you might like.”

This statement should remain to ring true. He took you to a less crowded market street, vibrant shops and huts lining the sides of the road nearly everywhere you looked. There were shops selling masks, fabrics and dresses, or all kinds of food. 

Tolya stopped in front of a bright red booth, offering something that looked to be tiny sweets. He called them mooncakes and went on a long, complex rant about how his sister always used to steal the best ones while he was left with the flavours that no one really liked. After he was done rambling, he bought a little box full of mooncakes and two cups of Kuei Hua Chen Chiew, also called osmanthus wine as he explained to you later.

For what felt like the hundredth time today, he pulled you away from the commotion and towards a little ledge that overlooked the lower parts of the city and quite a bit of the raging sea. The city was bathed in the red glow of the lanterns and flashing lights, competing against the heavy darkness that surrounded you. It was a strange, but beautiful sight to see. And it was made even more beautiful by the fact that you had someone to share it with.

i was offline yesterday, and when i opened tumblr this morning i had over one thousand notifications?? one hundred and fifty notifications were new followers?? i reached five hundred followers two weeks ago and now i have seven hundred?? this does not feel real, someone pinch me (or hit me, because this feels so unreal).

i am very certain that the release of season to has sparked this sudden interest in the fandom, but i am very thankful (and a little bit overwhelmed) nontheless <33 so, hi and thank you for everyone that saw my mediocre writing and decided that i am someone worth following, i am genuinely baffled.

It took me a bit to figure out whether I should write for Kaz or Nikolai, but I eventually settled for Nik! This song probably deserves a longer fic, but I hope you'll still like it!! (I'd be so interested to see what ideas you had for this song ngl)

Warnings: Mention of blood, Nikolai's demon, and slight inaccuracies when it comes to the transformation itself (i know that this is not how the demon works, but leave me be)

The night lay heavy over the rolling fields of Ryevost, a thick blanket of darkness stretching out in front of you. Had it not been for your flimsy lanterns and the sparse lights coming from the surrounding farmhouses at the edge of the city, you wouldn’t have been able to find a way through the vacant country roads and cluttered pathways. Nevertheless, you had to be mindful of the flowing stream rushing alongside the trail–neither of you intended on irritating their horses and taking a swim tonight.

“The farmer I spoke to when we left Os Alta said that he saw him soar towards the market centre, which buildings does that leave us with?” Tamar asked, expectantly looking from Zoya to you.

Zoya’s brows, which had been furrowed ever since Tolya had alerted you of Nikolai’s disappearance, were knitted together in thought. “There’s the town hall, but I doubt that’s high enough for him. The theatre house, the chapel, the–”

“The bell tower!” you interjected, eyes growing wide as you remembered one of the first incidents of Nikolai escaping the Grand Palace. 

“Not again,” the twins sighed in unison. 

“Let’s hope that the demon really is that simple-minded…” Zoya grumbled, giving you a telling nod and spurring her horse into a hasty trot. You and the twins followed.

It didn’t take you long to reach the marketplace, the hooves of your horse against cobblestone being the only sound that cut through the silence of the night. The town was bathed in darkness with only the flimsy streetlamps providing enough light to find your way through the narrow streets. 

You dismounted your horses and slowly approached the bell tower. It was hard to see anything with the sparse light the lamps provided, but you could still make out the towering peak of the building and the brazen shine the bell reflected. At least until a figure flittered in front of it.

Distorted charcoal limbs appeared behind the tracery of the already dilapidated belfry, the monster’s figure vanishing from sight as soon as you made eye contact with it. The town surrounding you had been eerily silent up until that moment. Before either of you could hope to get a word in, a low, vicious scraping of something sharp against wood broke through the silence, accompanied by the jarring squeaking of rusty hinges. Another thud followed before the town square returned to its previous quaintness.

“He’s inside the tower,” you muttered, voice barely audible as a thousand thoughts rushed through your head.

“How do we get him out of there?” Tamar’s fingers immediately found their way to her axes, but you dismissed her with a reluctant hand gesture.

“It’s likely that the hold the beast has on him already started to subside, otherwise he wouldn’t have chosen confinement over flying away.” You paused for a moment, evaluating your options. None of them looked particularly too rosy. “You three stay out here, in case I was wrong and he decides to break away again. I’ll go inside and try to assess the damage.”

Zoya let out a huff of disapproval, her arms crossed in front of her chest. “You cannot be serious? That thing ripped three sheep to shreds only a few hours ago and now you want to be alone with him in a confined space with no easy exit routes? The time at sea really must have rotted your brain more than I thought.”

“I know that this is a terrible idea, but I need you to be outside and ready if that thing crashes through another window again. You three are going to be more useful when it comes down to a chase than I could ever imagine being. I handled his demons before, I can do it again.”

A knowing glint flashed over Zoya’s strikingly blue irises, hesitance written all over her features. Her mind was at war between giving in to your request and rationalizing your doubt in favour of getting at least one of the twins to join you.

“Fine,” she eventually breathed out. “But if–”

“I can handle myself. If the demon dares to come too close to me, I’ll know what to do.”

She huffed in response but still gave you a tight nod in response. You didn’t hesitate further to break away from the group and approach the tower, summoning every ounce of bravery you had gathered in the last few years of being part of Nikolai’s team. It would be a tortuous ascend, but if it meant saving Nikolai, it would be worth it.

The wooden stairs creaked underneath your weight as you descended the narrow staircase that lead up to the archival rooms on the upper floors. You could hear frantic skittering and scratching inside the room above you, a series of muffled wails echoing through the empty halls of the building. It made your heart ache to hear the demon clawing away at every inch of sanity Nikolai had, but there was hardly anything you could do to keep the pain at bay. You could only be with him while it happened.

With steady strides, you reached the room where the noise came from. The wails seemed to have gotten even more excruciating, the closer you got to him and you braced yourself for what might expect you when you entered. 

You didn’t have the heart to listen to it any longer, so without a second thought, you pushed open the battered door and were met with a horrifying sight. 

The entire room was in complete disarray. Papers littered the floor, tables lay discarded and broken all over, and a whimpering mass of black wings and bruised skin was huddled away in the corner, clutching his arms to his chest as if he was cradling something. His ragged wings were wrapped around his shoulders like a cocoon, but you noticed that they were fragile and close to melting away again. From what you were able to see, his exposed chest was littered with scratches and black veins, but other than that he was slowly starting to resemble the Nikolai you knew.

“Nikolai.” Your voice cut through his weeping like a shot through the night. His body stilled for a moment and then a pair of dark, beady eyes turned to look up at you. 

The beast opened his mouth to reveal the rows of sharp daggers lining the inside of his mouth. A terribly wretched noise left his lips and with a startle, you realized that it wasn’t just a noise, it was a name. Your name.

You cautiously broke the distance between you and knelt down next to him only a little bit away from him. He scrambled to get away again, but the wall behind him blocked every attempt at doing so. 

“Nikolai, calm down. I’m not going to hurt you.” You reached out a hand to touch his bare shoulders, the wings retreating into the skin lining his shoulder blades as your skin came in contact with his. “It’s alright, you’re fine. Take deep breaths.”

His head was angled away from you now, eyes shut tightly while he refused to look at you. The more time passed, the more he looked like the man you knew. The pads of your fingers traced circles on his skin as you desperately tried to get him to stop shaking, but he just couldn’t seem to catch a proper breath.

“Please,” he whispered. “Please get away from me. I don’t want to hurt you.”

“You’re not going to hurt me. You’re okay, Kolya.” You inched a bit closer just enough to wrap the blanket around him and let him break down in your arms. 

“I’m sorry.” His voice was barely loud enough for you to hear. “I’m so sorry.”

You shushed him gently, pulling him impossibly close to you. “Shush, it’s going to be alright, Kolya. I’ll stay with you until it’s alright again.”

A bitter laugh cut through his sobs. “I fear that nothing’s ever going to be alright again.”

“Then I’ll just have to stay with you through all of that.”

"Do you even know what you're looking for?" Wylan peered over the mountain of books you had placed on the desk in front of him while he was busy leafing through the pages of some musical score he was interested in.

The prospect of buying new sheet music was probably the only reason he agreed to join´you on your trip to the bookstore. Well, that and your offer of getting hot chocolates with him after you were done.

"I hate to break it to you, but I'm not looking for anything specific, Wy. I'm just here to see what's new," you laughed, pulling out another copy of a book you actually already owned. This book had a prettier cover though, so you also put it on your list of things to keep in mind.

Wylan threw himself back into his armchair with an almost theatrical groan. He really did enjoy spending time with you, but watching you pick up the same novel for the twentieth time today to consider whether it would be worth buying or not was just a bit irritating for him. At least this bookstore had a pretty extensive collection of scores.

"Alright, let me just look at these three...four books and we can leave." You waved a very pretty, but also very old-looking copy of some classic novel around and gave him a reassuring smile. "I still have to treat you to a hot chocolate after all. And I wouldn't want the café to already be closed, would I?"

He snorted, slightly disbelieving of the statement that you could restrain yourself in any way shape or form when it came to books. Still, he patiently waited for you to be done with your shopping and was more than ecstatic to finally grab something warm to drink.
