Okay, death note content for a moment because I love this show so so much but more specifically I love the Wammy's Boys. With this in mind, Headcanon time!

Enjoyed games like Doom as a kid but they were banned from Wammy's, smells of plain soap and cigarettes, spent half his time at Wammy's doing anything but studying, probably tried different types of smoking at least once, gets bored really easily.

Really deeply values that rosary, barely Catholic as an adult but he still has really specific superstitions, cannot be trusted to watch true crime shows without getting angry, devours any and all crime novels the moment he gets them, fought half the staff at Wammy's.

Near:

½ Cantonese, ½ Carribbean, born in London, mystery shows are wasted on him, smells of absolutely nothing somehow, the quietest footsteps, weaponises people perceiving him as socially clueless to insult people to their face, all of his blank puzzles are different shapes, honestly I just think this boy should have thick curls.

My greatest struggle (/sarc) is that I do not like Billy joins Batfam fics.

It just feels like a misreading of his character. I can't properly explain it. It's like, this character has gone as far as being his own legal guardian (certainly committing identity fraud in the process) to avoid being adopted. Being taken in by Bats would not be a happy ending for him.

"Oh but it's about Billy finally feeling safe enough to accept support and help" Billy has a family. He has siblings and an uncle and a wizard and a tiger and a 'villain'. He has a support system already. Billy doesn't handle things alone, he just also doesn't abide by a traditional family dynamic that looks familiar as 'support'.

You're free to not like stuff and to each their own but I'm not going to sit here and let some of the good Batfam fics with Billy Batson get shat on cause some authors DO take into account on characterizing Billy properly and their take on how he would tackle the new environment and interactions with them. Even if it's slightly OOC, at the end of the day, who really gives a shit. It's called fanfiction for a reason.

To clarify, the post I made was a segment of a much larger rant that I cut down for sake of my sanity. That's clear in my tags. I'm not shitting on other people's work for the fun of it, I'm pointing out a trend in media wherein characters with nontraditional family dynamics are often forced into traditional families just because.

My point was not "this work is ooc and so it's bad". It was "this trope accidentally pushes the idea that a family only has value when it is a 'proper family'". It was a post about how societal conditioning impacts the stuff people write, just like my other posts about trends in fandoms across multiple blogs.

The more I think about Marauder's era Remus, the more valid he becomes tbh.

He doesn't step in to stop his friends bullying and harassing other students. This is bad. He admits it's bad. ("Did I ever tell you to lay off Snape? [...] Did I ever have the guts to tell you I thought you were out of order?")

But I also think there's a very good reason for that. Fear. Remus says, in that very line, that he did not have the guts to stand up to them. That he was scared to do so. And that makes sense because he was a half-blood, impoverished werewolf and James and Sirius were James Potter and Sirius Black. Arguing with them could have made him the next target, and with his position that could have been a major risk to both his safety and his education. James and Sirius at least couldn't get Snape kicked out of Hogwarts with a few words to literally anyone. They could to Remus.

And it's also stated in the very scene that Remus didn't do nothing ("you made us feel ashamed of ourselves sometimes... that was something..."). He did tell them off when he could, when it felt safe to. At no point is it ever stated that Remus partook in the bullying. In the memory we seem him trying his best to ignore it, and being one of only two people to not laugh at James assaulting Snape. In the conversation following, there is no mention of Remus participating. It's always James and Sirius. Remus was a disapproving force, even though he didn't speak up regularly.

Like, that's all valid as fuck?? Remus is the only werewolf at Hogwarts, there's no one to advocate for him if something does go wrong. As far as he's aware he will be expelled if enough people find out his secret and he will be unable to continue his education and be permanently locked out of the wizarding world. It's a legit safety concern for him. Tf was he meant to do, risk his safety and future for a guy he does not know, was obsessed with the dark arts and hated him personally?

Everyone has different desires from their fandom. Some people want to mindlessly play dolls, some people want to get way too into analysis, some people want to overly fixate on minor details and characters to use as their own 'canon' ocs, some want to learn everything about this media until they're a living encyclopedia of a world that doesn't exist.

When you're in camp two, you know camp one and three will annoy you. That character wouldn't act like that and that other character doesn't even have a spoken line what are you talking about. Camp four are your friends.

The logical thing for those in camp two to do is to just press not interested in camps one and three's content.
