I am in love w the way pre 2000s films have that hazy feel to them. hd honestly kills the vibe
I think that’s one of the reasons why “period” media that’s marketed off the Aesthetic sometimes bothers me.......like they get the music, the clothing, the cars......and yet it always feels like something is missing
like,
vs
or even compare the early x files to the reboot
something is just lost with the crispness
someone in the tags said early spn vs new supernatural and tbh 100% yes !!
vs
I never realized how much I missed the grainy undersaturated filing ...... “good lighting” and sharpness strike again
Seasons 1-3 were shot on 35mm film
4-15 were all shot on digital cameras, a change that the network insisted on
Yeah the exact thing that changed is that all the old stuff was recorded on film and all the new stuff was recorded on digital media.
i was going to say the film thing and the someone brought up supernatural and i was like "nah" and then @aphony-cree out here dropping that bomb.... in *2005,* to *2008?* there was a show shooting on film???? god you guys MOST shows went though this transition in the 90s how the fuck was SPN on FILM
In the 2000s dramatic shows had a good shot of convincing networks to let them use film. The network still had film cameras they’d bought and maybe hadn’t gotten enough use out of before the switch to digital. Most dramas can’t be shot entirely in the studio, they need to go on location, so it made sense to let them use the older cameras while the new expensive digital cameras stayed in the studio where they were safer
Supernatural wanted the 35mm film aesthetic and hated when they were forced to switch to digital
They just recently released a 4K version of Lord of the Rings and they’re so Crisp. None of those soft fantasy vibes
insert here the Brian Eno quote abt the imperfections of former technology being the first thing we want to replicate etc etc
Welcome to another thread of people believing that physical film has worse quality then digital film...
Me right now.
There’s always a lingering question that I ask myself, which is why do I, a cis bisexual woman, enjoy romance between two men so much?
There are easy answers, like that it’s just fetishizing. And like, I find men attractive, yes. But I also find women attractive. I don’t have a problem with enjoying het romance, assuming I can find good ones. I enjoy stories with female characters I can relate to.
But there’s something much deeper at play, IMO. A friend of mine who is a gender studies professor was the first person to point this out to me, but a lot of women enjoy m/m romance and gay porn because of the lack of women. It removes a source of pressure and sexism. Without any women present, you don’t have to constantly evaluate the sexism of their portrayal, or be reminded of negative experiences in your own life. It allows women to experience romance and especially sexuality without all the baggage that comes with it in our patriarchal society.
This was recently illustrated to me rather dramatically. I read a recommendation for a het romance. And it sounded cute, and came highly recommended. The tropes at play were fun. Until I read a snippet and realized this was a romance between a woman and her boss. I had a visceral negative reaction.
Instantly I’m thinking of sexual harassment stories I’ve read and heard from other women. I’m thinking of how uncomfortable it would be to have your boss develop feelings for you. How icky the power dynamics would be, etc.
And then I realized…this wouldn’t bother me if it were two men. Now, there’s no logical reason for that. Sexual harassment is just as wrong when its object is a man. But I know I’ve read fics with a similar premise and never thought about it. Because when it’s two men I can accept this is just a light romance, a fantasy, meant to be fun and sexy and not to represent the real world.
But I can’t when it’s a het relationship. There’s too much baggage there. Too much societal history of abuse. I can’t relax enough with the premise to enjoy that story.
Now some people can. And that’s fine. And some people are never going to be okay with power imbalances like that regardless of gender. That’s also fine. I don’t think having either reaction makes one morally superior. It’s okay to just enjoy light entertainment for what it is without going into deep analysis.
But it’s much more difficult for me, and I think for many women, to relax and enjoy romantic and sexual stories when they involve female characters. We’ve been burned too many times by shitty depictions, by shallow role models, by abuse portrayed as romantic. We have developed a stress response, a trauma response to heterosexual romance. We are hyper-reactive to a wide variety of triggers in regards to it. But removing women from the equation makes stories safer for us. And maybe it shouldn’t? In an ideal world? But for many of us, that’s the truth.
i would’ve killed mal, married nikolai and fucked the darkling but this bitch killed the darkling, married mal and didn’t even fuck nikolai, how can one fuck up life choices on such deep level?
Thougths on Our Dark Duet by Victoria Schwab
So if you haven't read this series please don't continue because it's gonna be a long spoilery RANT! 😄
I feel like I gotta start with the fact that I didn't like the Darker Shade of Magic series (unpopular opinion I know 🙄😄). And so I went into This Savage Song concerned that I might not like it. Which was totally not the case, cause I LOVED that book. It's a solid five star read; the world is amazing the plot while not too extraordinary is pretty catchy and the CHARACTERS ARE EVERYTHING.
I fell in love with August and I'm convinced that he's one of the most well written characters I've ever read about.
So here is the thing that annoys me so bad: the ending of Our Dark Duet. It kind of killed a five star read for me and dropped it to about three stars. And before that I loved ODD even more than TSS. Firstly I feel like I gotta say that I don't mind tragic endings. I sometimes even prefer them and I understand why this story probably needed a slightly tragic one rather then a happy one. I don't really mind that Ilsa dies. Like I get why. I just think it's too easy. 3/4 of the book is spend to build up the villian/most mosterous monster they are all afraid of and then they kill it in a page in the most cliche way ever?! (Like HOW?!) It's just a very bleak ending to an amazingly crafted story... And then there is the matter of Kate dying. Just randomly and without much emotion one of the main characters just dies and the book ends. And while I also understand the reasons why Kate's character might have to die, I also really strongly disagree!
One of the most intriguing parts about this story to me, is the way August wants to be human so bad. And the way Kate is the one bringing out the human in him. In ODD when he loses himself to his monstrous side, Kate's the only one able to bring him back. And I LOVED that dynamic. So why kill her of?And why do it in such an unemotional way? It could have at least driven August to mourn in a heartbreaking but really human way. The ultimate act of bringing out the human side in him. And afterwards you could have done the whole "she didn't die for nothing/ she gave us hope" thing. It could have been an amazing tragic but epic ending. Right now it's just the most flat ending to an amazing story. And that kinda makes me annoyed and sad. RANT over.
After a moment, his eyes flutter closed. His voice falls to a whisper, as though he’s talking to himself. “If you’re the sickness, I suppose you can’t also be the cure.”

I just can’t with these books... they are so gooood!

To the desert girl with sun under her skin. I’m in love with this book :)

Me (just finished Lord of Shadows)
old men argue…
in the end the young will fight the wars
my initial indignation from yesterday’s election results has since ebbed, but this was something i suddenly felt inspired to draw after a day of feeling numb. I have this deep seated fear of the unknown, but now that perhaps every young person’s fear has been realized, there’s honestly nothing i feel right now except utter disappointment. It’s painful that our generation is old enough to speak our voice but still too young to possess the power to make real change in this country.
I’m at a loss. I can’t say that happiness or naive optimism will solve our problems, so i’m not going to be happy. But what i can do is persevere. We need to be strong during these stressful and fearful times. And i am here to give anyone a shoulder of support.
this.
How did I get to this point where I am such a mess over a Norwegian TV show?

me trying to explain what I'm reading: It's a book series about a bunch of assholes playing an imaginary sport. People die, people get hurt, people lie. But they are so precious and adorable and need to be protected from the world. (✿◠‿◠)
So I need to talk about Skam...
So Tumblr just showed me Skam and I’ve been spending the day binge watching a TV show in a language I don’t even speak. And I REALLY understand the hype. The relationships are so unique and real and adorable and believable! And everything is awesome. But what I really need to say is: Have you seen that cinematography?! So as a university student doing film courses, I have so much to appreaciate about this series. The cinematography is gorgeous! The mise en scene (the flair) of the whole thing is modern and real and actually looks like todays school life in Europe. This is so much more authentic then any american production and that makes me so happy. And the transmedia storytelling, which is why this fandom is so big and so involved and has spread far over the borders of Norway even though we don’t even understand the language, is JUST AMAZING. That kind of storytelling is not easy to accomplish and they are doing an extraordinary job! So yeah. I’m really fangirling here right now. Such a good series!
