usamerican adult animated tv shows love to constantly skewer the right wing while being ideologically indistinguishable from them

like it's all well and good to call trump a shithead but if you do so while having years of unapologetic racism, misogyny, transphobia, homophobia, islamophobia, and/or antisemitism under your belt that you've never corrected for, your criticisms are hollow and meaningless

like the most obvious examples are obviously south park and basically every single seth mcfarlan show, but you can see a similar pattern in rick and morty, even if most of the right-wing messaging is unintentional and the result of poor writing. despite being very progressive in most ways, the simpson and futurama are not immune to this either as racist, transphobic, and homophobic ideas have creeped into them mostly via the influence of broader cultural attitudes. king of the hill is hard to get a read on, but overall i think it manages to avoid this problem for the most part by being about a conservative man learning to change with the times and accept more progressive ideas. i think the only other exception really is bob's burgers unless you want to start getting into adult oriented action shows and indie animation, but that's outside of the scope of this post

i've also heard disenchanted is pretty good abt this, even going so far as to have a lesbian as the main character, but i haven't watched enough of it to make firm determination. then again, i haven't really watched much of the simpsons either, only inferring most of this via cultural osmosis. i'm guessing the simpsons is perfectly fine for most of the time until you get jumpscared by a poorly aged joke hinging on normalized hate speech or the mere existence of Apu, but take that opinion with a grain of salt

Personally I’d say the pakleds were unintentionally ableist in Lower Decks but they were trying to improve something they knew was awful from the 90’s so it’s definitely got more going on as to ~why~

The book typeset in the future includes an interview with TNG scenic art supervisor Mike Okuda where he explains the reasoning behind the design choices made in the displays, including the fact that an ultracompressed sans-serif font is perfect for giving the impression that it’s easily readable without actually being something the audience could read and be distracted by. …so they’re now trying to search for “biomarkers”- which are essentially genes, or circumstances of conception/birth/what have you, that can “increase the risk” of mental illnesses. how is this any different from people wondering if there’s a “gay gene?” or autism speaks trying to find a genetic or reproductive “cure for autism?”

it’s not. this is barely disguised eugenics that they have ACKNOWLEDGED may (will) do more to harm than good for people with abnormal mental states. what else could the end result of finding a “mental illness gene” be than a reason to further marginalize those who are already marginalized, already branded as more likely to be (or even inherently) “mentally ill” and eventually discourage them to reproduce, either by coercion or force?

Psychiatry as an institution functions to obfuscate the causes of mental and emotional disturbance (economic exploitation, abuse, lack of access to resources, etc) by describing mental illness as an individual pathology that needs to be recognized and treated by science.

Given where these hardships cluster most intensely, it is extremely useful to white supremacy and eugenics to have a "scientific" method of proving that pathology is more common among "degenerate" populations.

The DSM's various incarnations have corresponded to shifts in which part of this process have been considered more or less important to prioritize - the latest restructuring to focus on biomarkers is just a recalibration to better suit the needs of the imperial-capitalist white supremacist project.
