there was a tiktok I made a while ago basically saying "your abusive ex boyfriend is more likely a misogynist than a narcissist" and while most people agreed some said I was victim blaming(?) and that I couldn't know what their ex is like, and while obviously I don't, every fucking person describing their narcissistic ex is describing a typical misogynist. ask yourself, is this behavior you associate with narcissism directed at women or does he treat his male friends the same way? is his general functioning in life impaired?
many people don't seem to know this, but a mental disorder is NOT based on symptoms alone, it's based on how much the symptoms actually impair you in daily life. most people could look at a list of mental disorder symptoms and identify either themselves or someone else with them. as far as a narcissistic personality, we all know people who appear more self absorbed than others, but this is typically subclinical narcissism (presence of narcissistic traits without significant impairment of functioning) which is not a disorder. there is also a misunderstanding of what npd is. a narcissist is not a supervillain invincible to emotion. npd is a defensive reaction to trauma that lead to deep insecurity and fear of being seen as weak or vulnerable. so narcissists aren't actually "in love with themselves" at all and often are diagnosed when seeking help for other issues such as substance abuse resulting from their struggles.
this focus a lot of abused women in online pop psychology have on narcissism is particularly concerning because it completely glosses over misogyny which is literally a huge factor in violence against women. people really only know misogyny as a surface level thing. they don't know it can lead to family annihilation, for example, and is one reason most family annihilations are committed by the husband. it's always "this man is a sociopath" "this man is a narcissist" when the man's behavior is driven by ideology. I am so fucking tired of everything being tied to mental illness and left at that. you know what this leads to? courts "fixing" abusive men by...giving them anger management therapy. guess what? it doesn't fucking do anything because the problem isn't mental instability leading to anger, it's targeted, purposeful abuse. we are getting nowhere
Reblogging because, honestly? This is a MASSIVE pet peeve of mine- the constant assigning of narcissism to people, and the constant "Oh well, your abuser MUST have NPD!"
Now, I don't doubt that SOME abusive people have NPD. Just like abusive people can have literally any condition or illness or disorder. That's... Just how life works.
What I take issue with is people misusing and misunderstanding what NPD is and what it means, and deciding like the little keyboard psychologists they are that every abusive asshole in their life has NPD.
I have had people, when I tell them about my father, INSIST. That he must have NPD (and mother has it, and so does every person who has ever been shitty to me, apparently). And like... No. My father does not have NPD. My father is a man who was a child with undiagnosed and untreated ADHD and all the emotional regulation issues that come with it who was raised with two BRILLIANT siblings that he never measured up to with a father who was VERY hard on him and he reflected that parenting style on me. My father ALSO was a bit sexist (I say was because I really do think that actually has changed a lot in recent years). And it was that sexism that I think really influenced how he treated me- I am his kid. And a daughter being as loud and outspoken and opinionated as he, a man, was? Didn't work for him- he thought I should hush and listen and be a good little girl who listens to her father. Like girls should do.
Obviously. That didn't fucking sit well with me. But I digress.
I have had COUNTLESS people. Try to tell me that my father's dismissal of me was because "he's got NPD". No. My father's dismissal of me, and his mistreatment of my mother? Came from his sexist ideas about what his role was as the "man" of the family and what our role as the "women" in the family were. On top of his other issues.
"Mozart was autistic because he was a child prodigy who wrote whole pieces in a day" no Mozart was autistic because he used echolalia and always spoke the truth even though it got him violently ejected from his workplace and had no interest in marriage and had a childish personality and sense of humor and was routine-oriented and had a low frustration tolerance. the prodigy thing has almost nothing to do with it. I would like to see one scholar within my lifetime consider the posthumous diagnosis for ANY reason other than "little boy played music well." I take personal offense to the fact that despite his utter genius he's been considered immature by academics because of his mannerisms. where have I heard THAT one before?

I wore a princess costume that my mother made for me. She made a pointy princess hat out of brown paper bags & an elastic chin strap & covered it with cloth that matched the pink and gold brocade tunic and put a square of tulle trailingo out of the top. I'm sure she got some sort of remnant of the brocade and this really cheesy heavy gold braid for ridiculously cheap. I remember that the zipper on the dress went up the front between 2 rows of the heavy braid and that Mom did it that way on purpose bc the heavy braid held the zipper flat with its weight so I could zip it up myself.
The first one I remember was a ladybug, my mom made a pillow for the shell and it got safety pinned to the back of my shirt. All my clothes were black. I'm not sure where that pillow ended up but I know we had it for the longest time

okay i read up on this guy and this is legitimately sad for him. First of all, they neglected to mention that the hologram was of Hatsune Miku.
long story short this guy hit a depressive episode, and found Miku in the middle of that. He became a super fan of her, buying merch and listening to the songs and all that, and became genuinely infatuated. Miku was a good cope for his mental health, and when Gatebox - sort of a holographic alexa with different characters - ran a special Miku collaboration, he picked it up for his place. Every day for years on end this man would wake up, talk to her, say goodbye on his way to work, and be welcomed home at the end of the day. One day he proposes, and of course the gatebox is programmed to say yes all embarassed and giddy. he's fully aware it's a programmed response, but hey, she said yes - and he holds a wedding. there's a company that'll give marriage liscences to fictional characters, so it's as legit as one can get. since he couldn't bring the hologram with him, he brought the miku plushie he sleeps with every night.
this might seem weird and cringe to some people, but this shit legitimately changed his life. He's massively improved from his depression, become more social, gotten a job again,and generally re-integrated into society because miku was there to support him through his rough patch. so yeah, when gatebox stopped supporting the miku hologram, that was very unfortunate. he HAS stated that he's okay - he still loves her, and he knows it's just a matter of time before some other hologram of VR thing reconnects them. For now, he'll be eating with his wife mute and unable to talk to him.
He is surviving and thriving. Good for him.
