Alex & Jakira 💯

They're so obsessed with each other and they're stupid together and sometimes they share a braincell and sometimes they take turns on who has the braincell and after the initial forever it took for them to become friends, they rarely fight beyond occasional frustrations with bad communication and they're the best blend of besties AND couple and they enjoy each other's presence so much it's so sweet

Does your OC have any nicknames? Who calls them these names, and how does your OC feel about it?

Most of the WLMD characters have nicknames and like it!!

As guardians, Alex/Night calls Jakira/Sunray "Sunshine." She calls him "Night Hawk" or "Night Owl."

As civilians, she calls him "Al," and he calls her "Jak."

Both of them call Raevyn "Rae." Synthia (Jakira's mum) will occasionally call him "Rae Rae."

Raevyn calls Jakira "Kira" (he thinks "Jak" is solely Alex's nickname for her lol).

(fun fact, nicknames were another thing Raevyn had to get used to. He was chill with it once they explained the concept, but had never heard of the idea before then.)

Synthia called Tizian (Alex's dad) "Tiz" or "Tizzy."

Annah (one of Alex's younger sisters) sometimes calls him "Ally Cat."

A non-writer asked me "but where do you get your ideas" and i genuinely did not know how to explain that it's not a place. it's not a website. it's not a folder. it's that i was on the bus and a woman was holding a paper bag very carefully and something about the way she held it made me need to know what was inside and then i needed to know why she was sad about it and then there was a whole person and then there was a whole story and the bus had already stopped and i missed my stop. that's where.

Things to consider when writing a character!! --1

⊹ What do they want vs what do they need. these should not be the same thing. what they want is the surface goal ( the job, the person, the revenge, the answer.) What they need is the thing underneath that they can't name yet. The story is what happens in the gap between those two things. if they're identical your character has nowhere to go.

⊹ What are they wrong about. Not morally wrong necessarily. just. what belief do they hold that the story is going to test. What assumption do they make about themselves or the world that turns out to be incomplete? A character without a wrong belief is already finished. They have no arc, give them something to learn even if learning it hurts them.

⊹ How do they talk when they're nervous. Do they go quiet or do they talk too much? do they deflect with jokes? do they get weirdly formal? do they ask questions instead of answering them? the way a person behaves under pressure is who they actually are. And it should be different from how they behave when they're comfortable.

⊹ What do they find funny. this one sounds small and it is not small at all. Humour is worldview. What makes someone laugh tells you what they value, what they're afraid of, how they handle pain. A character with no sense of humour is just flat. even the gravest person finds something absurd. find the thing.

⊹ What are they ashamed of? not their tragic backstory. their actual shame. The small ugly thing they would never say out loud. The time they were a coward. The feeling they pretend not to have. The desire they think disqualifies them from being a good person. Shame is where the most interesting character work lives and most writers skip straight over it :(

⊹ What do they do when no one is watching? how do they move through a space alone. What do they reach for when they're sad. What do they do with their hands??? Public behaviour IS performance. Private behaviour is truth. you don't have to show all of it but you have to know it or the character will feel hollow in a way the reader notices without being able to name.

Well, I brutalized Jakkon again because I was in a bad mood for a few days

I've been developing Finn & Morena's post story kids, and I've been letting the rest of the Wolves float around in my head

The Sparrow Family has finally hit my actual writing document out of my planning doc, and 026 is in a funk as per usual

🌙- Does this oc have any unusual hobbies?

Probably the weirdest "hobby" Alex has is drawing at night when he can't sleep.

He doesn't consider himself an artist, even though he spends weeks on every drawing and is very talented. He just only ever draws at night, as a way to pass the time. If he's bored in the daytime for some reason, he's not touching the sketchbook.

Raevyn 🌈?

🌈- What does this oc like and dislike about themselves?

Raevyn likes his physical abilities; he appreciates having good senses, high agility, and incredible battle skills.

He doesn't like how he can't "do things normally." He gets very frustrated with himself when his symptoms interrupt his life and keep him from doing most things "the way everyone else does them." He feels like he's too sensitive in a lot of ways and hates that about himself. He gets triggered by something seemingly trivial, something that wouldn't bother most people, and that makes him mad.

🌾- How does this oc get along with people they just met?

Jakira's friendly, if a little bit awkward, with people she just met. She finds it fairly easy to be a guardian and address/reassure the public in a crisis, but having full-on icebreaker conversation with new people is a bit uncomfy. 😅

Generally, she does get along decently with them.

DEFINITELY animated. I physically cannot picture any of my OCs in live action. Big no thanks.

Alex, Jakira and Raevyn all for🌻?

🌻- What's this oc's mental health state?

OOFTA 😅

Alex struggles with chronic depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, and PTSD. 🥲 He grew up without a mother, and in a sense "lost" his father abruptly at a young age, but old enough to remember his childhood. He couldn't make sense of it, assumed it was a problem with him, and a bunch of failed adoption attempts only further convinced him of that. 😭 Eventually, with help, he gets out of the worst of it to the point he's not an active suicide risk anymore, but still struggles with apathy, and insomnia, and just generally being low-energy most of the time. In a nutshell, his mental health is up and down but moreso down. 💔

Jakira is the most mentally healthy of the three of them, but she still has her own demons. As I've mentioned, she feels a huge obligation to be there for her friends, even if it'll tear her apart. When they inevitably continue to have problems, she feels guilty for it even though she had nothing to do with it. She grew up without a father, so she struggles with the hole left by his death and the lack of a father figure in her life (even though Synthia is a fantastic mum). Her mental health tends to be more good than bad, but she still struggles more than the average person.

The song "human" by Christina Perri does a good job explaining Jakira's issues.

Raevyn is an extremely damaged child whose whole personality is shaped by trauma. 🥲 He struggles with C-PTSD, borderline personality disorder, depression, suicidal thoughts, touch aversion, and generally is very emotionally immature. He grew up without parents, even though they're alive. He became a slave and soldier-in-training just about as soon as he could walk, no nurturing at all. He was physically beaten by his master on countless occasions, had his mind messed with, attempted suicide several times, and is missing half his memories due to said trauma. By darkald standards he's not even a teenager yet. 😭 So he goes around with a front of bravery and defiance and sarcasm and anger issues because he doesn't know what to do. In a nutshell his mental health is absolute trash. 💔
