eva stratt makes me so fucking unwell because. imagine months of making hard call after hard call because you gotta, because someone's gotta, and this time it has to be you. and she keeps strong despite it, she keeps going. then the fucking pit in her stomach she must have felt, when she realized that Grace was her only option left. the horror of that realization. having to steel herself for the task. only to have him beg and plead and cry. her friend. how did she not throw up. how did she manage it. eva stratt the woman ever, how many people out there would have the sheer force of will, to be able to pull the trigger on their friend to save all humanity. and she didn't even know if it would work. she didn't know. for years. she didn't know if murdering her friend was worth the gamble. she just had to believe in him. fucking hell.

no joke one of my favorite parts of animorphs is the fact that the adults are borderline incompetent. and its not like, one or two examples of the Bad Evil Adult that gets dealt with so our favorite child soldiers can go back to revering their Perfect Amazing Parents with new appreciation. there are good people who are trying and they are failing. and they believe they are helping but they aren’t. the animorphs are surrounded by ignorant adults at every turn, spend a shit ton of time making sure their parents stay happy and unaffected by the literal war being fought, and when they finally find out, the animorphs then have to try and manage all their emotions about that while also Winning The Fucking War. and there’s something so deeply relatable about parents who are ignorant that you have to Manage so that they stay happy at all times. core part of being a child

marco handles budgeting groceries for him and his dad for two years. peter comes to him asking for approval of naomi (iirc, i dont remember that very well) and marco very clearly does not approve. he knows eva is alive and more than that he doesn’t want a new mom. but he sees what his dad wants and so he lies and gives his approval (which, and i’m just now realizing this, parallels marco seeing that his dad wants naomi to be saved despite it being very clearly too late and so he lies to protect peter from the truth that in war there are people who can’t be saved.) marco and peter visit eva’s grave in book 5 and marco has just learned a truth that shattered his worldview in a pretty fundamental way and he lets his dad hug him so that peter will be comforted (yes it comforts marco but that is not why marco does it, crucially) and then they go home and play a video game.

also and this is not eva being incompetent but it is tangentially related to the post: somewhere in the time after she is infested, she decides that she will not be a mother to marco ever again. “I believe I was taken so my son could grow up brave and strong and someday destroy you” - paraphrased from Visser (the best book of all time). meanwhile, to marco, she is a representation of his childhood and the care he has not received in years. and what is happening is, together, eva and marco without ever speaking to each other are condemning his childhood to death

There's this weird fandom misconception that Sephiroth is this big grand leader/commander. And while, yes, he is occasionally put in charge of a few missions in certain flashbacks, it's not really him willingly in a position of authority.

Sephiroth is not a leader. At all. Quite the contrary. His actual personality is rather docile. He thrives when being given directives. And he always defers to close friends whenever he's trying to figure out how to deal with certain conflicts. He was SUPPOSED to be Team Glenn's leader...only to defer to them after making himself vulnerable to them. He keeps their mission on track for a time, but then does nothing to stop Glenn from enacting treason to save Rosen. Sephiroth's failure to lead his group is entirely why Angeal is put in charge for the Robio mission. And then when Sephiroth DOES step in to lead the group himself, there's negative consequences because he's being too moon-eyed over Alissa to listen to reason. After that? He's pretty subdued around Angeal and Genesis. Never talks over them. Lets them have their say. Never challenges them when he's being antagonized. Very, very passive. Around Zack? He directs the flow of the mission, yeah. But he also lets Zack challenge him, even snap at him. He never asserts his authority. Or seems to particularly enjoy it.

Which is why I never really understood the logic of Sephiroth being this charismatic leader in fandom. He grew up in a tiny cell and wasn't allowed to go outside. There is no part of his brain that hasn't been systematically conditioned to be submissive and obey orders. Sephiroth's only autonomy comes from his personal feelings about his loved ones. Which is a fragile, hidden part of him that he has a hard time expressing. His friends motivate him to act. And concern for his men motivates him to take charge, as he does when he saves the troopers. But he isn't a leader. Like...at all. He's a natural follower.

But what about Post Nibelheim?? After all, Sephiroth takes on a more dominant persona around that time. You know, after he's gone completely insane. Well, sorry. Still not a leader. Not a follower anymore. But not a leader. If anything, he's really a rogue solitary figure who no longer connects with anyone. He doesn't give a shit about his Black Robes and mostly just uses and abuses them when it's convenient. He only really cares about Jenova and Cloud. And those relationships, while somewhat symbiotic in Jenova's case, are solely to meet HIS needs. But it's not like he's this divine cult leader. Sephiroth has severed himself from humanity and, as such, operates alone.

Hell, Sephiroth can't even get along with OTHER Final Fantasy villains in Dissidia. By the time Opera Omnia rolls around, everyone is absolutely done with his shit. Weiss immediately wanted to murder him the second Sephiroth showed up with his Mommy Issues Squad proposing a temporary alliance. And then Sephiroth got clowned for the billionth time by Cloud.

So yeah. More holes in the Daddy Dom fandom facade. Sephiroth is sad. Everything about him is sad and kind of pathetic. Not a leader. No longer a follower. Just sorta...alone.

If you ever hear the phrase "fascism is aesthetics as politics," that's what this post is talking about.

It's not about being tough on crime, because the absolute toughest most brutal measure you could take against "crime" as a social problem is to alleviate poverty, and increase access to education, healthcare and social mobility.

It's about performing "tough on crime" as an aesthetic by enacting violence against a prop, i.e. minorities and the impoverished, who are fetishized and objectified to represent "crime." They are brutalized as punishment for crime, but never with the purpose of alleviating the problem of crime.

This is why a lot of conservatives and other right wingers can get straight up angry when you suggest things like reform or social measures to reduce crime. They don't want crime to be reduced, they want an eternal war against "crime" because it provides an arena for the righteous to demonstrate virtue by brutalizing their enemies.

i’m all for the angst potential of Dick Grayson being the one kid that Bruce never legally adopted and rather just kept as a ward and that causing insecurities for Dick, but at the moment all i can think about is how much funnier it would be if it was the complete other way round regarding who felt rejected about the whole thing. Tim and Damian find out Dick isn’t a legal adoptee of Bruce Wayne and rally to ‘have their brother’s back’ and go to confront Bruce on the matter, and Jason’s next to him when it happens and he starts crying laughing while Bruce just gets a really uncomfortable look on his face.

Jason, losing his mind: you think- you think BRUCE excluded DICK?! no no no bubba, it’s the other way around,

Bruce: *looking at the ground intently*

Damian: i don’t understand. why did Father not adopt Grayson then?

Jason, genuinely struggling to breathe: he- he tried- *high pitched, now on his hands and knees on the floor to wheeze* Dick- god this is my favourite story ever- Dick didn’t want him-

Tim and Damian:

Tim and Damian: what.

Bruce, blushing slightly: it wasn’t that he didn’t want me, we were just in different places in the relationship,

Bruce, starting to get slightly indignant: …-it’s also just slightly awkward whenever people come up to me and bring it up- all ‘why don’t you adopt Dick, don’t you want to?’ and then they list off all the benefits of legally adopting him and i have to stand there staring at them thinking ‘yeah i fucking agree.’

Tim and Damian:

Tim: i’m starting to think we’ve struck a nerve here,

Bruce: -you know i really poured my heart into that ‘i want to adopt you’ speech—had a powerpoint and everything, told him i loved him, basically got down on one knee with the contract. and this little shit stared me in the face wearing my fucking hand-me-downs, and was like ‘i think we should just be friends’ like how in the hell-

Jason, weakly from the floor: god i’m- please, i’m in pain,

Tim and Damian: *awkwardly watching Bruce rant while Jason cries on the floor next to him*

Damian: this may have been a mistake-

I know Animorphs is known for it's grim ending, but on reread the ending leans far more toward "and the adventure continues" than it does "rocks fall; everyone dies."

The One and Two Years later portions are entirely about setting up what Earth's new normal is in the universe. Marco and Jake are both right in their descriptions of everything happening in stride and also tensions being on the rise. It's a new world and that means there's endless possibilities.

The One Who Is Many encompasses this to: A new threat exists. But it's not just a new danger. It's also a mystery. Why does it call out Jake in particular? What does it actually want?

Even "Ram the Blade ship." isn't as dark as I remembered it being. I believe the authors have said they don't even agree on whether the crew of The Rachel end up dead from this move or not. And as far as the tone is concerned, I don't think it matters. Weird as it may sound either option leads to a feeling of there being more to know: it's just no longer in the scope of this story.

As a kid I was honestly more mad that it was a cliffhanger than because the crew of The Rachel probably died. I wanted more, dammit, and the book was refusing to provide it. Over time I ended up convinced it was "grim" but honestly? It was more like that scene in Avatar: The Last Airbender when Zuko gets to the end of the scroll and says "That can't be it. Where's the rest of it?"

It's sort of like the ending to the first book where the feeling was that the story wasn't done yet.

Not that it needs an official sequel or anything. As a story it's complete. Highlights and flaws it's a full story with an ending that tells you the world will continue to change.

There's a reason this book is called The Beginning and everything about the last book feels like an opening to something else even as the current story closes. It's dark in many ways as we see Jake and Tobias and Marco's dissatisfaction with the post-war but it's also fiercely optimistic in just about every other way.

It's why I can never get this series out of my head.

The more I think about it the more the ending really is so very in line with every other "ending" that came before it.

The Andalite Chronicles ends with Elfangor's story but begins that of the Animorphs.

The Hork-Bajir Chronicles ends with Jara telling Tobias that stories don't end.

Even The Ellimist Chronicles is about a beginning at the end of Toomin's world.

Everything continues. It may be dark optimism but it's optimism nonetheless. The tone isn't any different from what's come before it. It carries on the same theme.
