i love genshin. i actively discourage my friends from getting into it. the world is beautiful and expansive and extremely fun to explore. seeing the whole map is overwhelming. the story is engaging and the lore is rich and deep and scattered throughout the world and built up through quests. the lore is also incomprehensible to the casual audience. some of my favorite characters and the most compelling backstories ive seen exist in this game. theyre locked behind thousands of lines of text or limited events or, most egregiously, pages of notes hidden around a region with no in-game guide to finding them all. the combat system is fun to learn and work with and around and you can build so many creative teams and play whoever you want. the meta has nosedived into gimmicky mechanics and outright shills for new characters. new characters are fun and exciting and learning their kits and building them is an enjoyable part of the game. the gacha mechanic is predatory and aspects of it are unforgiving-- god forbid you ever pull for a four star. there's a built in card game and home design simulator and rhythm game and ucg. these things cannot be removed if you have no interest in them. the writing covers themes of war and guilt and power struggles and justice and fate and family and passing the torch to the next generation; who deserves the right to knowledge; what does it mean to be a human or a god. the plot is unfocused and bloated with filler and so far removed from the original objective of finding your family after losing them. this game has something good for everyone. this game will drive everyone crazy in its own way. the game is free to play. the mental barrier to entry is so high. i love playing but i hate feeling like i'm being held hostage. it's so good and bad. i play it every day and i think no one should get into it.

i must admit that l really dislike him BUT HIS VOICE.
One thing that I wish this fandom would acknowledge/discuss more is the fact that a majority of the Chrysos Heirs are in fact religious. As it's pretty fascinating to actually dig into. Aglaea, Castorice, Tribios, and Hyacine are all straight up priests. Each of them being part of different "churches" at that. The fact that all of them are, for the most part, pretty casual and private about their beliefs does not change that fact. Cyrene was also a priest, though her exact situation makes her position on the topic more complicated. She was absolutely a firm believer for a time but whether or not she still is is debatable. Phainon is in a similar position as Cyrene. He spent so long firmly believing that a "savior" would descend from the heavens to bring salvation to Amphoreus, and by extension him. Yet in the same breadth he hates his creator and everything it represents.
Mydei is also in a funny position but not because his faith has been shaken. More so because he is a firm believer in the "old testament" of Castrum Kremnos as it were and hates the "modern day" interpretation of the tenants of Strife.
While pondering this, I initially wanted to say Cipher isn't religious at all. But then I thought about it some more. She is(was?) a firm believer that those with golden blood are the "chosen saviors" as it were. A huge part of her self-hatred stems from the fact that she considers herself unworthy of being one of those "chosen heroes" IE is stricken by religious guilt.
Anaxa is the atheist among them. No more needs to be said on that and is pretty self explanatory.
Cerydra, I'm not sure I'd go so far as to say she's an atheist as well. However she also has a strong "humanity first" mentality and will happily shun the Gods when she believes they do more harm than good. The only one I am at a complete loss about is Hysilens. As she is the "daughter" of one of Amphoreus's Gods and that makes her feelings on the matter the most unclear out of everyone. Not to mention the culture of the sea sirens was so vastly different from that of land dwellers. With her I can just as easily see her views on beliefs going either way.
I would love to hear other people's thoughts on this topic.
there's a really cool subset of aventurine fans on twitter who claim to be critical of aventurine's complicity in the ipc's exploitation and colonization process, but when i wander onto the scene and actually talk about it and don't sugarcoat his personal selfish desires for wealth (because wealth = safety and stability in this world), they start screaming and kicking and crying. so i've been having to fight for my life these past couple days
like. yeah, aventurine's employment with the ipc is more so a form of indentured servitude, but you guys really think the ipc can contain that man? he's too fucking smart for that. if a large part of him did not enjoy the lifestyle this gilded cage offers, he wouldn't be there. people seriously want me to believe that aventurine is not resourceful or capable enough to concoct an elaborate scheme to break his golden shackles and vanish into less than a blip on the ipc's radar. if you ask me, actually, there's a damn good chance that his grand "death" on penacony was one such scheme, but he ended up changing his mind in the heat of the moment for whatever reason
and i empathize with aventurine's desire to be wealthy (aka, SAFE). after everything he's been through?? i nearly feel inclined to say that he deserves it. also, part of his motivation for securing wealth and power was to try to help the avgin rebuild, which is admirable. use the resources of the cosmic monopoly that destroyed their home to rebuild. but people have got to learn to admit and sit with the fact that he did just want wealth for his own sake, too
but none of this changes the fact that he maintains his newfound security in one of the most immoral ways possible. he knows firsthand how the ipc tears families and communities and local cultures apart. we know he feels guilt for his participation in the process. but he looks aside and dissociates himself from that guilt, and he continues to perpetuate the cycle of exploitation because the alternative is giving up everything he has and returning to a life defined by struggle. and again, it's hard to fully hold this against him when you consider how much he's been through. if you throw in the fact that he easily reads as having DID and interpret the "future" apparition as another person living in his brain instead of a mere representation of a concept, that adds a whole other layer of complexity to the way he seems stuck in place
we can understand and empathize with the way he seems to be in a cycle of imprisonment... while also recognizing that he is perpetuating another cycle of exploitation, and that he IS capable of shattering the former cycle, but doesn't because he is comfortable in this particular cage and afraid of what waits for him outside of it. and we can also empathize with that!!!! we can ALSO acknowledge that he is underprivileged when directly compared to his fellow stonehearts, but let's stop pretending that the threat of execution is unique to him. stoneheart is not a job anyone gets to quit or retire from. the only ipc-recognized forms of escape are death on-field or execution (or possibly memory wiping à la scp amnestics? but that one's just pure speculation). what's actually unique to aventurine is the fact that over half of his coworkers are chomping at the bit for any excuse to shove him onto the execution podium, so his position is much more precarious than theirs
people are allowed to talk about the fucked up facets of his character. we shouldn't have to limit our discussions to what's easily empathized with because certain people can't tolerate anything less than 100% glazing. aventurine is a complicated character in a very unique, complicated position. if you actually want to understand him, you're going to have to get used to balancing several contradictory and uncomfortable truths about him. or you can sit and defang his moral grayness and turn him into a "Perfect Victim" i guess because #dowhateveryouwantforever but don't get mad when i say that's mischaracterization
