IS EVERYONE GOING TO IGNORE THE FACT THAT ARTHUR ACTUALLY WINKED AT MERLIN
"As long as I live, my feelings for you will never change"???
That line is so bittersweet that it makes me almost cry.
Rewatching the show (specifically 2x04), and it's pretty clear that Gwen's feelings for Lancelot surpassed hers for Arthur. Sadly, Lancelot was the one that rejected her due to how friggin noble he was. Their romance even started way before hers and Arthur. Sir, you didn't need to step down (╥ω╥)
She never said anything like that with Arthur at the beginning of their relationship. If Lancelot had stayed and wasn't so damn honorable to a fault (& the showrunners didn't stick so closely to canon, which they didn't even do with other stuff), Lancelot would've been able to win her over easy since Arthur would've backed off quickly as he did when he said later in that ep that he only went looking for her because Morgana begged him.
I genuinely loved Lance x Gwen together, not just because I wanted Arthur with Merlin, but because Lance would have treated her the way she always deserved to be treated. She wouldn't have been the emotional third wheel in her marriage. Lancelot would've had her as his actual number one. Arthur's number one was always going to be Merlin. :/
I will never not be deeply saddened that the writers made it so that Gwencelot didn't choose each other. At least in all my fanfics, they do. /.\
I’m rewatching Merlin again and I just love how Lancelot seems sensible but is actually bat shit insane.
He’s got his morals, obviously, but he’s also just as chaotic as Gwaine and Merlin in his own way.
Like, a day after meeting Merlin he committed identity fraud.
Then he found out Merlin had magic and immediately decided keeping it secret would be more fun than turning him over, which would’ve gotten him the knighthood that he’d been dreaming of his entire life. Really love that he’s not a class traitor there.
Then he rode off into the sunset, cape billowing like a dramatic ass theatre kid turned DnD player with a leaf blower (talking from experience on that one)
Then he joined a fight club
Was fully prepared to sacrifice himself for Gwen with a hero’s death
Then left for some personal growth, which was fair enough but I’m kinda disappointed we didn’t get to see more of his character development. That’s what headcanons and fics are for though.
But then in Camelot, after getting his knighthood, he constantly encouraged Merlin to use his magic - with his “I’m sure a man of your talents can think of something” like they weren’t in a busy hallway where anyone could’ve seen - and casually fell in love with seeing magic used freely. The look in his eyes whenever he sees Merlin using magic is just soft, I don’t know how else to explain it. (Take that in whatever context you want it, I’m a sucker for Mercelot but romantic or platonic doesn’t matter to me.)
And THEN! Merlin survived the Dorocha and he tried to prank the king, someone secretly but not so secretly in love with Merlin, with his “Bad news, he survived.” Thing.
There’s definitely more, but I just love how chaotic Lance is and how much he got away with because his reputation as the noblest knight gave him a lot of freedom to do dumb stuff and then bat his eyes all pretty to get out of trouble.
I love this! 💚
One of the favorite things I discovered about Lancelot and Merlin's friendship in the books is that Lancelot went along with the whole ‘forged documents’ situation not out of ambition to be a knight or prove himself, but because he knew Merlin was trying to help him and he didn't want to hurt Merlin's feelings by refusing.
Lancelot did it, quite simply, to make Merlin happy.
Even with Lancelots noble heart and deep respect for the knights’ code, he was willing to cross a line—not for his chance to fulfill his life s ambition, but for his newfound friend’s honor.

pov: lance isn’t a selfless, sacrificial man and actually fights for the woman he wants
Did anyone else notice how Arthur says to Gwen that he wants to leave Camelot and be somewhere he can just act like himself, which, just before this, he claimed that he can be himself around her.
But then he turns around and says he wants to take Merlin with him (instead of her) to the farm......
So I’m pretty sure that in the back of his mind he always knew Merlin was actually the only one he could ever truly be himself around.
And let's be real, he is not himself with Gwen. He might show her a casual version, but it's still pretty guarded and very nearly almost formal. They behave like very good friends?
Not like how he is with Merlin. Merlin is the only one who gets to see him, as they say, with warts, and farts, and all. 😅
#MERLIN U R SO EXTRA OMG
It seems to me that Merlin has light blue eyes and Arthur’s are a little darker, so they’re like literally such two sides of the same coin...??
The real problem with accidental baby acquisition? Differing parenting styles.
(also the whole ‘our baby is magical but only one of us knows’ thing)
Did Arthur ever stop to wonder how incompetent their guards must be to get knocked out by Merlin?
No one in this restaurant knows I’m thinking about a land of myth and a time of magic
Scriptorium demo is so fun i had to make these two
the thing about lancelot is that he IS first and foremost merlin's knight. he's mr. "your secret's safe with me." mr. "oh merlin you need to get to the cup of life? awesome i'm coming with you." mr. "i made a vow to gwen to keep arthur safe but merlin got hit by the dorocha so i am immediately going to abandon both the mission and my vow in order to look after him for however long he needs me. obviously" and it's really funny because nobody expects it from him. the difference between him and gwaine (also merlin's knight) is that he's quiet about it so nobody ever fucking suspects him. if arthur ever gave him an order he'd be like yeah sure alright and do it BUT if merlin pulled him aside to ask him if he would go against the order to cover for him saving the day (as usual) lancelot would be like "Say No More <3" and kronk wrong lever arthur into a pit on purpose. and then he would throw himself into the pit as well like "oh my god sire i am SO SORRY </333 i must've pulled the wrong lever or the rigging was messed up or something </333333 please my lord you have my utmost apologies and you can execute me for my foolishness if you want :((((" and arthur would take one look at his sad little face and be like No lancelot it's not your fault.....You are The Best knight i have and i trust you Completely....that lever must've been Tampered with...with Sorcery.... and merlin saves the day in the background and then he and lancelot go out drinking that night to celebrate
That time when Arthur saved Merlin’s life instead of Gwen’s.
Swap "cop" for "sorcerer" and this is literally Arthur to Merlin.

Why would two platonic best friends not be able to tell each other i love you even when one is dying? Reason 13453 Merthur was romantic....
