having now read canonkiller's review:

From the review & the scattered posts I've seen from Greer about the characters, I found myself forming a theory about Why It's Like That in many ways: I suspect it originated as an RP between Greer & a friend. The reason scenes are so isolated to 2-3 characters may very well be becauss there were 2 people writing back and forth, & Greer eventually reworked a great deal of it by stitching it together & re-writing various sections. I'm not accusing them of using someone else's writing without credit, I just think the world feels so barebones because so many of the details we'd expect from a full novel were less important in the context of an RP & they never bothered to flesh things out much beyond that.

Of course this is just my impression &, again, is not an accusation nor even necessarily negative if it's true; It just may be a possible explanation for much of the flaws(aside from bigotries, & even then, perhaps explains why so much goes unchalleneged by the narrative if the foundation was built on a mutual understanding that is never shared with readers).
