okay but. maybe the reason dean is searching is because he knows cas isn’t in heaven. sure, bobby told dean that “cas helped” rebuild this new heaven. but dean can sense it. he knows. he knows cas isn’t there; he can feel it deep in his bones and knows it in his soul down to his core, and now dean is on a mission. he needs to find his family. needs to find cas. because there’s unfinished business between them. he’s following the one-way street that cas paved, because goddammit he needs to make it a two-way street. he needs to find cas so he can say how he feels, to show cas they can have this. and, okay, on his search for cas he found a new hunt, and who would dean be if he didn’t take up the hunt so he could protect and save the rest of his family. but it hasn’t strayed him from his course. he’s not going to stop until he finds cas. so, yeah, he doesn’t mind being kicked out of heaven, because he knows cas isn’t there, and he’s willing to search anywhere and everywhere until he can find cas and speak his own confession out loud for cas to hear; so that maybe they can find the happiness together that they’ve both fought so hard for

i’m working on a play about 65-year-old lesbians, and my dramaturg is an older gay man who has been helping me with historical context and research, and also just in general giving me advice based on his own personal experiences.

fav thing he told me so far, said with a lot of love: “dyke drama was specific. it was always so specific. it was precise and narrowed and pointed. and also so dumb.”

also spoke to an older lesbian professor. i was asking her all these questions about marches and protests and summits and infighting and rallies and “what was it like what did this mean to you what was it like to experience that?”

and she kinda stared at me for a bit and said, “you know, it was a lot. and it was big and it did feel revolutionary. but also at that time i was mainly focused on getting my heart broken in a bar.”

and like. yeah.

another thing my dramaturg told me, from the perspective of a gay man who lived through the 80’s, was that whenever a young gay person asks him what the dating and play scene used to be like, he answers:

“we went to rallies and funerals.”

our persistence in our continued existence is big and scary and revolutionary, and the grief stretches on and the losses hit hard.

and because of that, i think it’s important to remember the dumb drama, and the first loves, and the first heartbreaks over beer. i think it’s important to go to rallies and vigils, and also dive bars and game nights.

it’s all so big and so small.

For historical context, this is about making a panel for the AIDS quilt, a memorial project which began in San Francisco in 1985. Due to the stigma surrounding both homosexuality and AIDS during this time, victims of the epidemic were often cremated and disposed of or buried without ceremony, their bodies unclaimed by their families or origin or held by hospitals rather than released to same-sex partners.

Each panel in the AIDS quilt memorializes a life lost to the disease. Each panel is 3′ x 6′ (approximately 1 meter wide and 2 meters long), the approximate dimensions of a cemetery plot. The quilt, which then consisted of 1,920 panels representing 1,920 individuals lost to AIDS, was first displayed in Washington DC in 1987. The public response was immediate, positive, and overwhelming, and the quilt began taken around the country to be displayed in more cities. At each stop, the names of the dead were read out loud. At each stop, more panels were added.

By the time the quit returned to the US capital in 1988, it had more than 8,000 panels.

The quilt continues to grow. Today, it has over 50,000 panels memorializing over 100,000 of our dead. It’s too large now to physically display in its entirety, but you can view the entire thing online. There are also curated virtual displays of just panels which honor the Black and native people killed by the virus because in the US (and likely abroad, although I don’t know enough about public health elsewhere to say so with confidence), communities of color are disproportionately impacted by epidemics, as we have seen time and time again.
