For some time after serving my military service for 2.5 years, I steered away from military-inspired gear. Perhaps I needed some space from it. But as I grew older, and my girth grew wider away from a time I was at my fittest, I feel nostalgic about my time in the military, my time as a soldier. Of course, my mind erased all the bad stuff, and only selectively recall the good stuff. The discipline, the greater purpose, the camaraderie, the free hair cuts… Today, on a whim, I pulled out my military-inspired watches and was surprised I had a few! So much for keeping my distance. Really grateful for plants as a gift. Thank you @raymond.chooi & @anitaxhsieh ❤️ I never really grew up keeping plants. And in our first home, all the house plants we kept, well, ceased to exist. Even cacti. These days, I tend to our house plants with surprising habit. Moving around the house just checking in on them, as if having an excitable toddler isn’t enough to check in on. I appreciate the plants forcing me to slow down in my day, even if just for a second. I’ve now got 2 more to look check in on. After fitting on new gloss black front grilles, we took our car out on a road trip to the peaks. Grateful that it was reliable through the winding country roads and rain. I am ever grateful for the UK countryside, something I did not have at my doorstep growing up. Growing up, I wasn’t really into cars. All I knew was when I grow up, I daydreamed of driving a BMW. It’s been a minute since I organised events. For nearly 10 years, organising events was very much an integral part of my professional and personal life. And then, there was that dark pause during the periods of lockdown. And in a space of 4 days, I will be organising 2 events with my @drinkmorning team mates here in London, in conjunction with @londoncoffeefestival. As always, it’s been an insane whirlwind leading up to the events. And just like countless ones before, even on the eve of the event, despite all the prep, you just don’t know how it’s all going to turn out. And the only way is forward and see what happens. And the best part of doing events, back then and now, is the awesome people you work with to make it happen. That unmistakable buzz of team work. Last year, I attended @londoncoffeefestival as a member of the public. It was a long time since I had been to a coffee festival. I don’t think I’ve ever dreamt that I would be in the coffee industry. But here I am, a year on, about to start the next caffeine-fuelled 4 days of London Coffee Festival as part of the trade. I am grateful to be part of this crazy, passionate and fun industry. Today, I made an English Breakfast, or a fry-up. And it was an occasion. I was lost around the kitchen, it was a big deal, I psyched myself up the whole of yesterday. Big deal for me. And I just take it for granted that on too many Saturdays, such a breakfast is ready on the table after my morning shower. @cafegirl @valeriechooi does this week after week without fuss, without making it a deal (unlike me) whilst making breakfast for an active toddler after a long hard week at work. I’m so grateful, so inspired. It’s not one-off gestures (like me) that makes mothers great. It’s the constant toil and dedication they give amidst a hard everyday life every single moment. Today is one of those days. There are work days when I feel exceptionally contemplative and I enter my metaphorical studio. I think, do loads of writing, and planning for the business, strategy. I’m grateful for such studio time, and it’s when I do my best work. Good music to lubricate my cerebral flow, and today helped by beautiful sunshine cutting through the chilly November Friday. And earlier today I caught sight of my watch, and somehow it washed me with some strange comfort and gratitude. Today I have on my late grandfather’s watch, a 1970s 17 jewels automatic #Seiko on a limited edition #Timex fabric strap. Weather beaten, but still cranking on. I wonder if my down-to-earth working-class-ethic grandfather would ever imagine one day that his Singapore-purchased watch would land on his grandson’s wrist in the UK. He worked for the British air force as a airbase shopkeeper, and 50 years later here I am living in suburban Britain. It sounds outlandish when I frame it like that, but it is what it is. Each time I pack for a trip, I reserve the last bit to decide what watch(s) to wear and bring along. It’s something that shouldn’t give me as much pleasure, but it does. It’s like eating a dish and keeping the best bit for right at the end. This time, it’s my manual-winding #Hamilton #FieldKhaki on a nato strap that made it out to Porto with me. What with budget flights and packing light, only one watch made this trip. My Hamilton is comfortable to wear and feels really good on the wrist, especially with the nato. The complementary gold-lined strap really just makes the combi for good wrist porn.
