Disney vs. 7 early fairytalesĀ
The 1812 version of Snow White is even worse when you consider that the girl was only seven years old in the tale (plus her unconscious body ended up being carted around by the prince until one of his servants accidentally woke her up).Ā Also, in The Little Mermaid, the mermaidās unable to speak because she had her tongue cut out >__<
But Iād love to see faithful adaptations of the original tales.Ā Especially Bluebeard.Ā We need a Bluebeard adaptation.
Actually, the original-original pre-Grimm Brothersā stories that were passed around Europe via oral tradition are nowhere near as violent as the Grimmās made them. Cinderellaās stepsisters were never ugly and kept their eyes, Snow Whiteās mother was not even a villain (instead a group of bandits were), and instead of spending the whole story napping Sleeping Beauty outwitted a dangerous bandit leader, wouldnāt let him sleep with her, and saved herself.Ā
The original oral stories were radically changed by the Brothers Grimm to fit their personal andĀ politicalĀ beliefs. Most notably, they often added in female characters solely for the purpose of making them evil villains and took away most of the heroinesā agency and intelligence. Both brothers belonged to a small fanatical sect ofĀ CatholicismĀ thatĀ vilifiedĀ women because of the idea of Original Sin and Wilhelm in particular had a particularly deep hatred of women. The Grimms were actually pretty horrible people. Those cannibalistic queens and ugly stepsisters and the mass amount ofĀ violenceĀ against women didnāt exist until the Grimms wanted them to. Their ideas stuck so soundly though that we now assume they were in the original tales and that these terrible characters and ideas come out of someĀ perceivedĀ barbaric Old World culture. But in truth theyāre really the Grimmsā weird obsession with hating women showing through. The original oral folklore focused on the heroesā and heroinesā good deeds and used them as ways to teach cultural norms and a societyās rules and encouraged girls to be quick-witted and street-savvy instead of passive princesses, and the Grimms promptly stripped that all away.Ā
āGrimms Bad Girls and Bold Boysā by Ruth Bottingheimer is an excellent book on this
We had to read The Book of Lost Things for school and itās Grimm level crazyĀ
Not only that, youāre skipping out a really important thing: the brotherās grimm got those tales from WOMEN, women were the ones who would tell these tales orally and the brotherās grimm took them, altered them to be sexist and never gave the women credit. You can read Clever Maids the Secret History The Grimm Fairytales for more info
reblogging for the excellent commentary
Thatās why I hate it when people rag on Disney forĀ āChanging the original fairy tale.ā Except in the cases of direct adaptations, like Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, and The Little Mermaid, the stories had already changed so much that by the time they got to Disneyās hands, the hardly resembled theĀ āOriginalā at all.
i always think that the thing that might set humans apart from other intelligent species in our galaxy might be that we have thumbs because thatās what sets us apart on earth. no species on earth has thumbs as good as human thumbs, humans have the best thumbs. that allows us to hold and use tools better than all the other species on earth, so we can construct massive buildings and scary metal boxes that shoot across the land at faster speeds than any animal can manage. thatās our key advantage as a species.
you know what else is a key advantage? we can stand on our hindlegs better than any other species. in fact, if we werenāt able to walk around as we do with our hands completely free all the time, our thumbs wouldnāt be nearly as useful. it would be difficult to carry things and it would be borderline impossible to do other tasks while we walked.
but why are we so good at standing as we do? what physical trait do we have that allows us to stand and walk using only our legs so easily? itās our muscles. specifically, our butt muscles. the muscles in our butts allow us to stand up so conviniently.
conclusion: maybe aliens donāt have butts.
The MSPA Prophet Origin Story
I am writing this on February 20th, 2013. I do not know when, or if, I will ever post it. But since youāre reading it now, it can only mean one thing: the MSPA Prophet is dead, and it is now safe for me to tell the world how I knew when updates were coming.

Petition to change āhe looked at her like she was the sunā to āhe looked at her like she was the moonā and any other variation bc I look at the moon in wonder and love and amazement while Iāve only ever just squinted angrily at the sun
He looked at her like she was the sun, in that he never looked at her except in frustration. He basked in her warmth, he complained when she was gone, but he never looked. On days she was muted, he complained. On days she was stronger, he hid from her. He never looked at her until she was leaving, and in the beauty of the sunset he wondered how heād never seen her before.

Media teacher: Part of why media is so constant is that it's so temporary. You can get emotional watching your favorite TV show, but after it's over, you forget about it and move on with your life. You might be upset if a character dies, but you wouldn't lock yourself in your room with a pint of ice cream and cry about it.
