there’s this apparently pervasive belief even amongst ostensibly progressive groups that some people are more entitled to a certain career (whether that’s being a streamer or owning a small business) than other people are entitled to being fairly compensated for their work. imo I spelled it out pretty clearly when I said what you’re quoting, but just to be clear: if a streamer or youtuber is incapable or unwilling to pay someone for their labour, whether that’s thumbnail art or skin design or video editing or channel moderation, then they are not in fact entitled to getting it for free. even if they’re “not already well-off”! nobody is entitled to free labour regardless of their material circumstances. being a streamer is not a fundamental human right.

content creation as it stands is not a traditional industry, but commissioning artists is. you want someone’s labour, you pay for it. contrariwise, I’ve seen content creators compared to street performers, which feels apt; they are more akin to buskers asking for tips (or perhaps radio show hosts, if you want to get parasocial with it) than to employees clocking in at a 9–5. furthermore, “watching someone’s stream and/or edited video” does support them, through ads and such. no, I don’t think streamers automatically deserve my money if I watch their publicly available content; that’s not “utilising their labour,” I’m not commissioning them to do anything for me. the streamer–audience relationship is not comparable to the employer–employee relationship. for comparison, you don’t have to pay to listen to a street musician (although it is nice), but you do have to pay them if you want them to make a song For You Specifically.

anyway in my ideal vision of content creation we also have universal basic income so people are free to engage in whatever careers and hobbies they so desire, but if you’re balking at the simple idea of fairly compensating artists and moderators for their work then I realise that concept might be a bit much for you

I’ve avoided talking about the avid/sbk debacle on this blog for a variety of reasons, in no small part because the way this situation has been handled publicly has been incredibly unprofessional, disorganised, and indeed dangerous for everyone involved. more than anything it seems quite evident to me that the lack of any worker protections or third-party means of resolving intracommunity disputes in mcyt continues to facilitate unmoderated and uncontrolled spaces where this sort of harm runs rampant. furthermore, the way terms like “narcissism” are being so casually thrown around by fans and sbkers alike is extremely concerning, especially in conjunction with how many people—again, both fans and ccs!—seem to be taking this as an opportunity to gleefully inform the world that they never liked avid, always knew something was “wrong” with avid, or “had a bad feeling” or “intuition” about avid. to me it seems quite obvious that avid and marm, regardless of the harm they caused others (and they did cause harm, and that should absolutely be acknowledged), were themselves suffering, and the continuous dogpiling of two people who have already left content creation will only worsen things for the victims. the fact that this issue could not be resolved internally, and has instead turned into an extremely public and drawn-out controversy that will follow sbk, pow, and everyone associated with those communities forever, is nothing short of a tragedy facilitated by the lack of proper recourse for such situations within the mcyt space.

in short: we gotta get this industry some fucking HR departments!! maybe even a union or two!!! or else this shit will continue to happen.
