So excited for the gen 10 starters
Me: I love X and Y, except for navigating Lumiose City. It’s too large and confusing to find the buildings I’m looking for.
Pokemon Legends ZA: We made Lumiose City even larger and more complicated! Also it’s probably the only location in the game :)
Me: Oh. Why am I not upset?

December Pokemon Challenge 2022!
follow along with me and use the hashtag “december pokemon challenge 2022″ so we can all celebrate our favorites together!
EDIT: since we’ve got convergent evolutions and paradox pokemon now, I’m gonna lump them all in with “regional variants.” If a pokemon was created by saying “it is this old pokemon but technically not because I want it to be a different type” yeah we’ll count it. This is all for fun so we’re getting loosey-goosey with it!
And we’re done! But hey if you missed out, feel free to make posts for whatever days you want to keep the love going. Any day is a great day to take part in the December Pokemon Challenge! ❤️🤍
December Pokemon Challenge: Day 31
Favorite Pokémon: Espeon (other than Squirtle, Growlithe, Mew, Camerupt, Cyndaquil, and Gogoat)
I’m glad I get the chance to talk about Espeon. Over the years it has slowly sunk down on my list, but annihilating every trainer in Colosseum will always be a core memory for me. Umbreon didn’t have great moves back in gen 3 so it didn’t get nearly as much use as Espeon with its big bad Psychic. And in multiple games since, I’ve worked hard to raise my Eevee’s friendship during the day to get Espeon on my team. Honestly at this point I think Umbreon actually has the better move set but Espeon has already cemented itself as my favorite Eeveelution and one of my favorite Pokémon overall!
December Pokemon Challenge: Day 30
Favorite legendary/mythical: Suicune (other than Mew, Marshadow, and Jirachi)
Crystal was my first Pokémon game so I’m a little biased after seeing Suicine on the cartridge every time I put it in my GameBoy. Also, Pokemon 4Ever was one of my favorite movies as a kid. Water has often been my go-to type, so Suicine is always the legendary beast I look forward to catching the most. It’s the most dog-like of the trio, I love its shade of blue and that beautiful purple mane, and it really kicks butt in battle!
December Pokemon Challenge: Day 29
Favorite regional form: Hisuian Growlithe (other than Alolan Ninetales)
I don’t have a lot to say about this pup because I haven’t actually used it in a playthrough yet but I just like the design, and any version of Growlithe is still a great Pokémon. I love the added fluff (especially over the eyes) and giving it the rock type makes it stand out a bit, even if it is defensively so bad. I just like this happy dog!
December Pokemon Challenge: Day 28
Favorite starter: Totodile (other than Squirtle and Cyndaquil)
I guess I just love himbo crocodiles. I loved Totodile in the anime and have always thought it is a really fun design. I’ve actually used Totodile more than Cyndaquil because of that one line in the Johto games where Prof Elm says a Pokémon raised by an evil trainer becomes evil, so I’ve never wanted to see either Cyndaquil or Totodile under Silver’s control, so I had to choose Totodile as my starter. Not to say I’m fine with Chikorita being evil, I am just not as massive a fan of it. But that also works out fine since there are an ungodly amount of water HMs in Johto so you kinda need two water types on your team to cover them all. But yeah, Totodile is super fun and I actually like both of its evolutions as well, even Feraligatr who suffered from the character limit of GBC and never got that second e added back into its name.
December Pokemon Challenge: Day 27
Favorite Gen 9 Pokémon: Fuecoco (other than Spidops)
I picked this guy out ahead of time as my starter just based on appearance, but Fuecoco’s personality in the games solidified my decision. I love Totodile, so Fuecoco is naturally also a top starter for me since it’s basically the fire variant. I’ve been really enjoying all the memes of how nothing is going on inside Fuecoco’s head, it really is peak himbo. But on top of all that, Fuecoco is just a great starter choice. It wrecks the first two gyms easily, it gets a couple fairy moves for good coverage, and eventually becomes part ghost, which is both a good typing and my favorite type. Yes, it’s weird that it’s almost a duplicate Hisuian Typhlosion less than a year after Legends Arceus, but the Fuecoco line theme makes a lot of sense so I’m not mad.
December Pokemon Challenge: Day 26
Favorite Gen 8 Pokémon: Perrserker
Maximum derp, just the way I like it! I mean a Viking Meowth? What an unhinged choice and I gotta say it panned out really well. Normally steel types are either really bulky or have some design aspect that implies impenetrable armor. But Perrserker is pretty much “haha steel wool.” It looks like you could punt it 20 feet wearing only socks. It’s such an odd steel type but that’s why it stands out! It’s so ugly I can’t help but love it.
December Pokemon Challenge: Day 25
Favorite Gen 7 Pokémon: Primarina (other than Marshadow and Alolan Ninetales)
This is the Pokémon that broke my fairy-aversion. Alolan Ninetales helped, but Primarina blasting through dark and fighting types changed my tune fast. It’s a beautiful mermaid with a cool singing theme and powerful fairy moves (in the region with the dragon/fighting pseudo legendary, no less!). I kind of picked Popplio arbitrarily but it really turned out to be the right choice!
December Pokemon Challenge: Day 24
Favorite Gen 6 Pokémon: Talonflame (other than Gogoat, Pangoro, and Yveltal)
The first of the three flying types I used in my playthrough of Y. It was really refreshing for the regional bird to gain a secondary type and fire ended up being an especially good typing for me. I actually think all three in the evolution line are cool designs, but Talonflame is definitely the best of the three. Its design and color scheme just really accent how quick it is and shows just how powerful it is. I had no complaints the whole time using it and I do have to refrain from using it in other games it appears in so I can try out new Pokémon. It made Pokemon Y a great experience for me, for sure.
Day 16 and 17 aka my favourite pokemon of all time
Listen, its no surprise I'm British. I hold my heritage in such high regard, it makes Maurizio Cattelan look like Diogenes of Cynic. So, with that in mind...
My favourite steel type is perrserker. Yes, I understand vikings are more Scandinavian and the horned helmet isn't part of traditional attire, but perrserker just just fits Scotland so well. After reading about the history of hadron's wall, I couldn't help but laugh at the pure unadulterated fighting spirit the Scots are renowned for. Combined with the invention of steel and the utter silly shit that Wikipedia describes as "List of battles involving the Kingdom of Scotland", you get a pretty clear idea that medieval British warfare is closer to a casual match of Team Fortress 2 than anything an army veteran has faced.
So game freak condensed this history of silliness into one, goofy lil cat.
I love them
Continuing the theme of me being
Extremely British
Goblins, brownies, fair folk, trolls, sprites, pixies, fairies. Whatever you wish to call them, they are soooo much more than pink little things with wings. They're tiny, they're ̶A̶n̶n̶o̶y̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶ lovable, and they disappear quick. Long story short, grimmsnarl looks at the caring, girly, motherly side of fairy types, and says "but what if no?".
Day 19 and 20: a ghost story with a side of bonk
My favourite gen 1 pokemon is missingno.
I'm not sure if this ethereal beach-wanderer can even be considered a pokemon (as it only appeared in one game), but fuck it. This guy makes the best campfire story, and stumped me as a child for years. An empty pokedex slot that could only be filled by visiting an out of bounds beach, which slowly breaks your game seems like something out of bad creepypasta, but is real thanks to power of negligence and some rushed coders. I'll be honest, I was originally going to put bulbasaur as he just speaks to my plant collecting brain, but this fella just couldn't be beaten.
Oh yeah, and aside from grimmsnarl, here's my favourite fairy typ-
...
As I was searching up hatterene into Google images, I was met with some...
Results.
I'm not going to refer to what I found any further, but I would just like to say I'm disappointed for those who forgot to act civil.
Anyways, hatterene is the counterpart to grimmsnarl, and follows a lot of the same concepts! Both have similar pagan roots (grimmsnarl being a brownie, gremlin or trow whilst hatterene is a stereotypical witch), both have strong tie to hair (sympathic magic and the like) and both being very
neurodivergent.
Seriously, being scared of loud noises, emotions sending you into a panic attack and being called the witch of the woods?
Thats autism.
And lastly,
Toxic masculinity is dead, I'm a fairy and grass gym leader
Preach, dude
December Pokemon Challenge: Day 23
Favorite Gen 5 Pokémon: Munna (other than Golurk)
I just love this simple design and the great character built out just from its game data. It’s this funky dream thing (probably related to Drowzee in some way) but in a more positive way than most dream-eating pokemon that came before it. I loved having Munna and then Musharna on my team in White, and its lore inspired me to use a sleep move set which worked out pretty good for most of the game! Munna is friend-shaped and has always been a friend to me each time I’ve encountered one in a future game.
