Fanfic Reccomendation Page (JATNP)

I was over on TV Tropes, browsing through the pages of my favourite childhood shows like the totally normal person that I am, and I was disappointed to find that JATNP doesn't have a FanficRecs page. I know that a couple of other Disney Junior shows have them, but a couple of them are a little smaller than I would've liked.

So I decided to have a little fun and do my own fanfic recs on Tumblr. We did something similar on the server a little while ago, so I'll add some of those references on here. For everyone's comfort, any trigger warnings will be marked as follows.

Without further ado, enjoy the recommendations. Feel free to add more if you have any, because I'm always on the lookout for new ones.

I of The Storm by PumpkinPirate.

Status: Complete

Summary: Sometimes they would wonder, what would've happened if that night they sailed away from the shores of Neverland? Could it have avoided the turmoil from the beloved youngest Captain of Neverland? Could it have avoided her from leaving her crew behind to re-discover herself? Could it have avoided him from watching his best friend fall into a pit of self-hatred? The tides change, so do people, and sometimes, they change for the worst. But as every sailor says, there's always a rainbow after the storm, and what you're experiencing right now, it's the eye of it, that eye that had set its glare on you.

Despite its really sad subject matter, I loved reading this. Really plays into what "growing up" would look like to the team if one of them faced a terrible tragedy, and the impact it has on the other members of the crew. It had such strong characterization and world building, and every sentence made the characters come alive. This author really has a gift for making you feel every emotion on the page, and the ending gave me literal chills. Special shoutout to the attention Pumpkin gives to minor characters, such as Cubby and Skully, who rarely get the spotlight. I would also strongly recommend checking out some of their other oneshots on their page, which are always a treat to read. Trigger warning for abuse, homophobia, violence and death.

The Fathoms Below by Lunarlullaby03

Status: Complete

Summary: Izzy immediately turned to the helm of the sentient ship, “Bucky? Did Jake ever come back last night?” It was the question she dreaded asking the most. Unfortunately, the answer that came from the ringing bell wasn’t better. No. Jake never came back to Bucky. “Wh-What does this mean?” Cubby asked nervously. Izzy swallowed hard, “It means something must’ve happened to Jake.”

~~ Jake goes missing shortly after celebrating the anniversary of Lord Fathom's defeat. When he reappears...he's not quite himself.

Someone wrote that they could picture this coming straight out of canon, and there couldn't have been a truer statement about this story. Utilizing the really awful cliffhanger from canon, the author transforms it into a gripping tale around the crew attempting locate Jake after he disappears one night. I loved seeing everyone come together, just as the did in "The Great Neversea Conquest" to assist with the search, and we get the perspective of some other characters that really adds a lot to the story.

If you want a suspenseful, exciting fic right on par with the show, this one if for you. Trigger warning for referenced kidnapping and implied child abuse.

The Hand is Gone by TheBackyardigirl

Satus: Complete

Summary: Growing up on Neverland is a dangerous thing, and for Jake? It leaves him running for his life from a twisted flying child.

A lot of fics play around with the idea of Peter being evil, but I've never really seen it told from the perspective of one of the children. Sure, we get the Lost Boys in most stories, but Jake and his crew were handpicked by Peter himself and clearly look up to him. It does beg the question of what would happen if their beloved leader turned on them, or find out that he wasn't the person they thought he was.

This little exquisitely dark oneshot explores that notion, and every time I go back to it, I can't help wanting to reach through and pull Jake out of that situation. Trigger warning for violence and dark themes.

The Hook and the Rose by bchargoistheartist94

Usually I avoid romance stories, but this one is among my favourites. It's nice to see a sweet relationship between these two characters and everyone was so in-character I honestly believe this could've been a deleted scene from the show. I also want to shout out the author who has a page on here where she shares her artworks, which are just as stunning as her writing.

Summary: Peter and Hook have a talk about the body on his deck.

Love, love, LOVE me some murder mystery! We don't often see Hook and Peter interacting outside of fight scenes, so this was a fun and suspenseful read. Trigger warning for implied murder.

The Talstein Pirates by Goldyfox101

Status: Ongoing

Summary: When a strange and threatening pirate family shows up in Neverland, they make all of its inhabitants start to mysteriously disappear one by one. To make matters worse, Peter Pan is growing weak and tired after years and years of exploring, and is unable to help, leaving Jake and his mates as the only hope to save Neverland and stop the dreaded Talstein Pirates.

All of the fics by Goldyfox101 are wonderful, but this one is, by far, the most intriguing and suspenseful. It's always interesting to see how the crew fares against foes that don't have the confinements of a Y-TV show and this one will have you on the edge of your seat with its twists and turns. Trigger warning for violence.

The Sword and The Child by heyits.reagan

Status: Complete

Summary: The weapon is great and powerful and could take on a thousand men. Nevertheless, it chose a child.

Really brief oneshot that I won't spoil for you because it's just that good. Makes you question whether children truly belong in the world of pirates. Trigger warning for violence and major character death.

The Tyranny of Captain Cronus by Youwillneverseeme

Status: Complete

Summary: There's a new pirate crew in Never Land, and they don't plan on sharing its treasures. Very soon, everyone is feeling the sting of their captain's insatiable greed. Nobody is safe, not even Captain Hook, as everything cherished about Never Land threatens to come to an end. Have Jake and his pirate pals finally met their match?

Between this with Jumba and Pleakley I get to why some parts of the internet is freaking out because how lately Disney have been with letting us down with remakes but also I mean I'm very skeptical myself but also I kind of want to give it a try but then again I don't want to be disappointed

Don’t watch this movie, I’m begging. This is more than just complaining about how disney doesn’t need to do live action remakes. This movie in particular has already exploited the lands of Hawai‘i by filming there and will continue to do so by promoting tourism there, which is destroying the islands and harms locals and indigenous natives who are already getting pushed out of their homes by foreigners due to tourism and gentrification.

This movie also promotes whitewashing. They casted a lightskinned wasian woman to play Nani instead of an actual indigenous Hawaiian woman. This movie is promoting the erasure of Hawaiian people getting to tell stories about themselves, there’s not a single Hawaiian person behind the writing or directing for the production of this movie and its clear that unlike the original cartoon, it’s made with a clear lack of respect for its people.

Do not watch this movie.
