Do you ever think that it's kind of surprising human civilization has lasted this long with nuclear weapons and that there any number of incidents that should, by rights, have led to full-scale war?
The timeline you are in right now exists as a multidimensional zig-zag between catastrophic events. We are sandwiched between universes where nuclear war did break out.
The reason you exist to think these thoughts is because this particular "you" does not live in one of those apocalypse timelines.
This is one of my favorite examples of observer effects.
It's impossible for us to observe a universe that doesn't allow us to exist, meaning that the universe we do observe (our universe) will necessarily have properties that allow us to exist, no matter how weird or unlikely those properties may be.
The same thing goes for nuclear proliferation. In order for us to observe a world in which humanity has had the ability to destroy itself in nuclear war for the better part of a century, we have to live in a world where not only has that capacity existed, it also hasn't been used. That means that every close call, no matter how weird, has to have played out that way because we are in a world where it didn't kill us all. Of course the world is weird as fuck: we're the end result of decades of narrowly avoided catastrophe.
The diplomacy, economics, and random fucking bullshit that led to this moment could, for all we know, have been impossible any other way. Maybe in the world where the pepsi cola company never has a navy, the soviet union gets twitchy in 1988 and the world ends. Maybe in the world where Jimmy Carter doesn't get into an altercation with a swimming rabbit, he's just a little too arrogant in a meeting and escalates when he should defuse. Maybe in a world where reagan isn't married to the og hollywood throat goat, he's slightly more stressed and hits the big red button one day because he heard they got black people in russia.
The world is weird, but it's the only world that can lead to this moment.
You. You get it.
This, unfortunately, does not represent a guarantee on future events (unless Hugh Everett III was right about quantum immortality)
Next, reread all this through a trans lens, and you begin to see that we can and do peer into such worlds and timelines. Further, that some things about YOU are so immutable, they cannot be denied in any reality. Not without great cost, often loss of life. Trans people feel the ache of anemoia--nostalgia for things, places, our whole lives that never happened here as they needed to. As they were supposed to. We feel when there has been a change in our own timelines.
Are you saying that I'm trans because some jerk went and altered history?
The first term should have been enough…
The 30+ years before that first term should have been enough...
It used to be cold. There used to be all these bugs.
Maybe he understood for the first time that to the boy he was himself an alien. A being from a planet that no longer existed. The tales of which were suspect. He could not construct for the child’s pleasure the world he’d lost without constructing the loss as well and he thought perhaps the child has known this better than he.
The grass used to be green in the summer not brown
In autumn, puddles would freeze overnight, and give the sharpest, sweetest snap when you stepped on them. All gone by late morning, but reappearing the next day with sharp crinkles and chimes.
mayflies used to coat the road so thoroughly in spring that their corpses made the road more slippery than black ice.
All I remember are the live bugs. I remember driving down the highway and openethe window, hundreds brought in by the draft. Saved from being splattered on the hood and windshield. Flying awkwardly as they mated midair.
I don't remember when the last time I saw one
I miss the fireflies. They used to light up the night by the hundreds. So plentiful that you could scoop them into jars to keep inside. Now I might see one or two if I’m lucky
op disabled reblogs but I think the point still stands
reminder that the books themselves also suck ass actually. there's an entire plotline endorsing slavery. the one character who advocates to end slavery is bullied and made fun of. the one slave who doesnt like being enslaved is bullied and treated as an outcast. the bankers are the picture of racist stereotypes of jewish people. the one asian character is named fckn Cho Chang. the worldbuilding SUCKS. fuck harry potter and fuck rowling. stop giving her your money.
Don't fucking go see this shit
I CANNOT GET THIS VIDEO OUT OF MY FUCKING HEAD. HUNGRY HUNGRY PIZZA FOR ME. MY HUNGRY ASS WILL EAT JUST ABOUT ANYTHING!
You’re my present this year.
Y'all need to STOP
Merry Christmas y’all

When I was a kid watching tv was idiot coded and nerds read books, but now scrolling shortform videos is considered braindead behavior and watching tv means you're some kinda intellectual. You might think this shifting assessment of media's consumers might make readers into absolute super geniuses, but no. Only perverts read now.
"The History of our Revolution will be one continued Lye from one end to the other. The essence of the whole will be that Dr. Franklins electrical Rod, smote the Earth and out sprung General Washington. That Franklin electrified him with his rod—and thence forward these two conducted all the Policy, Negotiations, Legislatures and War"
-John Adams
Okay I was like ‘surely that is fake’ so I looked the quote up and not only is it legit, the next bit of the letter is “if this Letter should be preserved, and read an hundred Years hence the Reader will Say “the Envy of this J. A. could not bear to think of the Truth”! [“]He ventured to Scribble to Rush, as envious as himself, Blasphemy that he dared not Speak, when he lived. But Barkers at the sun and Moon are always Silly Curs.” But this my Friend, to be serious, is the Fate of all Ages and Nations. And there is no Resource in human nature for a Cure.”
Fully and utterly obsessed with every single aspect of this scene
