alastor's perspective on The Flashback and his rejection
after the finale, I think I have a full read on vox and alastor's past from alastor's perspective. I'm sure people have already made posts on it but I gotta lay it all out.
alastor always wanted to find a way to get out of his deal with rosie. at some point, he figured out to do so, he needs someone ELSE to become the strongest sinner in hell to break the terms of their agreement.
cue up-and-running young overlord vox, growing his power and becoming "as close to equals as [he'd] imagined down here" with alastor.
I think alastor saw the potential in him and attached himself to him because he thought if it was anyone, HE would be the one to break him out of his deal. yes, in a way, he WAS just trying to use him for his own needs BUT I think in a similar case to alastor becoming "accustomed" to the hotel, he did find vox entertaining and enjoyable to be around and willingly spent time with him as if they were friends (no matter what alastor himself says).
and I really, truly believe him when he says he "respected" vox.
and I do think he genuinely thinks vox ruined it.
why?
he thought he was so close to freedom. but then his key to said freedom decides to stunt his development by relying on HIM and even bringing up his power! no, you don't need MY power, YOU'RE supposed to become the most powerful sinner in hell!
he freaks out. there goes his plan to get his freedom!
he thought vox could surpass him. but this offer indicated to him that he couldn't, and he really WAS disappointed. he went and ruined it. at this point, he lost his respect for him.
"THERE ARE NO FRIENDS IN HELL, VINCENT."
I can't really tell if this one is pure emotion/a freak out from alastor who's projecting or if he was saying this in an attempt to scare vox out of relying on anyone else ever again so that he would truly become the most powerful sinner... but I do like to think it's emotionally-fueled.
but either way, it didn't work, and vox later got two other partners in the form of the vees.
years later, season 2, alastor has tolerated his deal with rosie for years, but now he's reached a breaking point. his scar and busted up staff is grating on him and he wants out. he revisits his old plan.
I know that it's a joke that alastor thought of inciting divorce in the vees after sitting under the MORNINGSTAR family statue but. I think it really is true. his plan was to get captured and stir shit up in the vees so that vox would become the most powerful sinner WITHOUT the vees. and this time, vox wouldn't rely on anyone else. and this time, it would actually work!
honestly, I think this reading would make "alastor accepts vox's offer" aus very interesting! imagine him still trying to get vox to become the strongest while working with him! but I don't wanna get too off track, hope I layed this out coherently!
(note: this blog FIRMLY sees alastor as aroace so please try to respect that in the notes! thanks!)
I drew a human version of that scene
old mean cat and his enrichment rubber ducky
HOLY FUCK I THINK I FIGURED SOMETHING OUT
So, the scene where Alastor gets free of his Deals with Rosie and Vox has been bothering me since I first watched "Curtain Call" at 4 am this morning.
For one, why did Charlie saying Vox is the most powerful break his Deal with Rosie?
What does her words change in this situation? Like, if Vox is more powerful, then he's more powerful, regardless of what Charlie says, right? It's not like there seems to be any magic involved other than Alastor using the Favor she gave him. Vox himself has been saying he's more powerful than Alastor for a while, so it's not like they just needed someone's verbal confirmation. And there's a significant delay between Charlie's words and the leash around Alastor's neck vanishing.
I was trying to figure this out all day. Maybe he needed the ego boost to transform into demon mode, and that was what tipped him over the edge to being the strongest sinner? But even then, there's this still a delay between Vox transforming and the collar vanishing.
Additionally, if Alastor's Deal with Rosie was broken, then how did he still have his power? My understanding of Deal Magic is that if the Deal is broken, it's broken. Neither side seems to keep what they got. Why would Alastor get to keep his power for free?
But what if Charlie didn't break Alastor's Deal with Rosie? What if she completed it?
Let's go through the scene again.
Charlie says: "Vox is the strongest sinner in Hell"
Then, we cut to three separate reaction shots where the people of Hell cheer.
The delay for those three reaction shots can be explained by them occurring simultaneously, and if the next shot was Alastor's leash vanishing, then I wouldn't have thought this much about it.
But the next shot is actually Vox and Charlie. Vox laughs maniacally, then transforms, screaming "Oh, yeah!"
Then Vox delivers another line of dialogue: "Look, Princess! Hell's finally listening to you!"
Only THEN do we cut to Alastor, with the collar breaking.
And not just Alastor, but Rosie, too.
Why include Rosie here? Specifically like this? The collar around Alastor's throat broke, but we don't actually see anything on Rosie's end that looks broken. And the sound effect at this bit isn't the sound of something shattering or breaking. Listen.
There's a sort of magical "ting!" as the collar breaks, and a dramatic "thrum!" when Rosie's eyes flash.
The time delay between Charlie's line and Alastor's collar breaking is 18 seconds.
The delay between Vox saying that Hell is listening to Charlie and the collar breaking is less than a second.
What if the task Alastor was supposed to complete for Rosie was making Hell listen to Charlie? At least three separate times in this episode, we are reminded about Alastor's cunning specifically when it comes to words and Deals.
Right after this when Alastor escapes Vox's captivity is the first reminder.
Vox: "Fucking wordplay?! You tricked me with a fucking technicality?! Seriously?!" Alastor: "Mmm... it worked, didn't it? Baby, I'm a demon in Hell! It's kind of our thing!"
Then, Rosie reminds us twice in her and Alastor's part of "Hear My Hope." "Why don't you help them, you double-dealing manipulator?" and "I will not reward a snake like you."
On that note, Rosie seems angry with him here. Like she didn't get what she wanted.Like, perhaps, she wanted him to help Charlie, but he used her phrasing to his advantage to free himself without actually having to help that much.
Even when he came to the Emporium to tell him he had quite the hotel and basically threatened her, she didn't get angry.
And apparently, Rosie cares about "them" (unclear whether that's just Charlie and those closest to her, the entire hotel, or more. Alastor's shadows showed Emily, Charlie, Vaggie, Husk, Angel Dust, and Niffty dying when he said that).
Remember Alastor's lines in "Finale." "The constraints of my Deal surely have a back door." I think this was the back door. A way to technically fulfill his end of the bargain and free himself now.
The more I think about it, the more I think this is the case. Charlie completed Alastor's Deal, she didn't break it. Which is how he still had so much power to fight Vox right after.
Ok so I definitely agree with this and it would make a lot of sense since the deal definitely involved Charlie and (maybe) the hotel. Rosie for some reason needs Charlie to be as influential, revered, and respected as her mother. There’s a theory that Rosie could be Lilith somehow and while that could be a possibility, I think it’s more likely that Rosie and Lilith are 2 separate people that are connected somehow. (Side note: I think Rosie is definitely at least hiding parts of her backstory but if there’s a big identity reveal for her I think it’s more likely to be that she is Eve or Roo or idek)
But just now I had the realization/theory of this: we haven’t heard Lilith talk. We know Lilith was influential and that her voice has the potential to be a great tool or weapon. We also know she cared about sinners, was against the exterminations, and wanted to lead an uprising. The last thing we know is that she disappeared about 7 years ago. She has been ignoring Charlie’s calls, was going to do something to convince Charlie to back down because she had to uphold her deal that Lute mentioned. However, we don’t know how, when, or if that would’ve happened because Sera made Lute call it off. We also know that the season ends with Charlie answering a call that seems to be from Lilith (It does look like Charlie actually checked caller ID this time but considering Lucifer got tricked by “Charlie” calling, who knows who is actually on the other end of the line).
Lilith’s voice will definitely be revealed to the audience at some point in the future, but will it be in the first episode of season 3? Will it be in present day or through flashbacks? This brings me to my theory:
I think something happened to Lilith’s voice
What if Heaven decided to do more than yearly exterminations to keep the order between Heaven and Hell? What if they managed to take away Lilith’s influence? Maybe the deal was that Heaven either bound her from speaking through a deal or magically took away her voice as punishment, in return for her life or even in return for Charlie’s life. Hellborn couldn’t be harmed in the extermination and that included Charlie. Who knows if Lilith being in Heaven is more of a punishment, a perk, or both.
But if Lilith’s voice really is out of commission rn, that could explain her not answering Charlie’s calls as well as why it’s so important now that Charlie can take her place as the voice of sinners.
People acting like the season finale means ValAngel is canon is so stupid. The finale shows how much Angel loves his friends and Husk, not Val. He's not going back to Val because he loves him or is seeking comfort. He's going back because he's completely given up on himself. He thinks he's a danger to the ones he loves, and he doesn't think he has a choice anymore. This is a tragic ending, not some romantic scenario for ValAngel fans.
Angel burst into sobs when Husk took his hand and held it so gently. Angel is devastated he has to leave behind the greatest guy he's ever met. He's heartbroken. They both are. This hurts, but it also proves how huskerdust is far beyond platonic.
I know I sound harsh, but I'm just getting annoyed with all the comments from ValAngel shippers.
People are speculating that Lucifer told Alastor about the fact that he can't harm sinners, and I actually have a different take.
I think Lucifer believed that Alastor figured it out. He 100% believed that Alastor was capable of figuring out that major secret completely on his own accord, and it's a fair assumption because Lucifer has done NOTHING to harm Alastor despite the obvious animosity between them. It makes sense for Alastor to contemplate over why Lucifer hasn't done anything to seriously harm him, and it makes sense for him to come to the conclusion that Lucifer CAN'T harm him.
In other (more delulu) words, Lucifer thinks Alastor is intelligent and sussed out his biggest secret. And he also thinks Alastor would go spill the beans, because again, there is a LOT of animosity between them. (Also Alastor is literally Vox's prisoner and could have just been tortured for information, who knows, Lucifer sure doesn't.)
