I think it's interesting how in our modern symbology, whether it be emoji, emoticon, or any other highly stylized representation of a human face, the mouth is typically the primary conveyor of emotion, while the eyes can be simplified all the way down to two black dots and the eyebrows and nose can be removed entirely. And this tracks with how we consciously perceive facial expressions; the first thing children are taught about them is that a smile = happy and a frown = sad.

The funny thing is, the mouth is actually among the least important facial features for expressing human emotion. Wearing a mask hardly impedes others' ability to read the wearer's expressions; when I wear one, it surely doesn't stop others from reading mine. That's because the facial features that do the REAL heavy lifting for conveying our emotion are our eyes and eyebrows. A sad smile still reads as sad, and a confused frown doesn't, because of the relative positions of those two features.

Because we so strongly associate expressions with mouths, it's easy to assume that a mask wearer would lose a significant amount of their ability to emote, despite this not being the case. But more interestingly, on the flip side, someone with the upper half of their face covered might seem like they can emote just fine, while in actuality being extremely difficult for others to read.

The craziest part is though: most people wouldn't question it, because they can still see the person's mouth, and mouths are how we think we read expressions. But all the while, this hypothetical individual's real emotions would be hidden away, all while everyone around them is under the impression that they aren't.
