First and foremost, GAUGE SWATCHES ARE NOT NEGOTIABLE. And when you’re done making your swatch throw it on the floor right side down and step on it in your bare feet.

Also, don’t be afraid to try your socks on as you knit them.

Buy the Fish Lips Kiss Heel pattern from SoxTherapist on ravelry. It’s only $1, and she gives a good description on how to knit socks that fit. So if you really don’t know your own gauge, or have weird feet (like mine. Wide at the toe but narrow at the heel. Super frustrating!), it’s super helpful.

I’ve found that cuff-down socks are a little easier than toe-up, so I’d recommend that method for your first pair. Silver’s Sock Class is a great tutorial for beginners.

I have an expanding file folder for circulars and straights are displayed on the shelves

I have a pretty bucket-originally meant to be a small trash can, but it’s pretty and I just stuck all my straights in, and then I got a bunch of circulars and tossed them in too. So basically I store them as a jumbled up mess. Anything that doesn’t fit in there, I’ve got some shoeboxes that my girlfriend made all pretty, with fabric and ribbon.

I knitted up a big needle pocket a while back for my straight needles, and I keep my circulars in the interchangeable needle case I got for Christmas. My notions are in an old makeup bag for now, but my mom's actually sewing me up a super clever one!

So I got the yarn for my upcoming Fandom Knitting Bee project! And the skeins are tiny! Yeah, they're 110 sport weight yards and all that jazz, but I was definitely expecting bigger skeins. We'll see how they work out and if I'll be able to knit the whole scarf with them! I ordered two of each of these.

(And seriously, browsing the Knit Picks site is glorious. I can't wait to knit a sweater with something pretty and luxe! And here's this yarn!)

So my cat Charlie loves yarn a lot. Like, more than me a lot. And she took a lovely skein of Lion Brand Wool-Ease all over the house. Now it's four little center-pull balls of yarn and one weird butterfly courtesy of a totally unnecessary knot.

Long story short, this is my favorite way of keeping yarn, and here's how I make it happen! I use the third method he explains, just winding for a bit on my hand and then wrapping that into a ball. It's rad and free and useful when you don't have a ball-winder or a swift! I'd recommend listening to the Hozier album on repeat too, just like I did (and have been doing for like a month).

This video helped refresh my memory on knitting through the back loop, and basically saved my life life with the thumb gusset increases on the Deathflake Mittens. And it's super short! Bonus! Heck yeah!

So they're doing things! I'm almost certain I've got the chart down pat, and despite the super tiny misstep of the above cat (Charlie) breaking both strands of yarn a couple days ago (thankfully giving me long tails), things are happening! I really need to pick up some steam if I want to finish both mittens by the 6th, though.

One mistake I've made was my method for holding the thumb stitches—I don't think using worsted was too bad a call, but using a dark navy yarn? Yeah, that wasn't the brightest idea in a mostly black mitten. I'll have to use my phone's super intense flashlight when I pick up those stitches.

And for people who've had as much trouble as me: for the thumb gusset increases, I did a yarn-over of the color I needed in the increase row and knitted into those through the back loop on the next row, and it worked out well enough! Check out this post for more info!

Duck Hunt Scarf by yiayiaknits

DW scarf - Day 15

i woke up feeling like a train wreck this morning, so naturally, i went back to sleep. hooray for saturday mornings!

i spent most of the afternoon watching movies and the latest episode of Doctor Who. oh, and knitting. i did more than 40 rows today. i had a brief moment of horror during Pirates of the Caribbean (the first one) when i realized i had nearly finished a ninth row where there should have only been eight rows. i had to very carefully undo that row so i could start a new color. the brief moment of horror was followed by one of utter confusion when i undid the last three stitches of the eighth row (i do this so the color change happens more or less at the very beginning of the next row). i had undone one stitch but was left with two loops. whaaat??

so now i have a funky looking end between a red section and a purple section (it’s the part right over my hand in the picture), but at least it won’t fall apart. and i kept the number of stitches at 60, so that’s good too. 

oh, and you can’t see my face today because i haven’t showered and i’ve been bummin’ it all day (literally sitting on my bum in my pjs in front of the tv; figuratively being a bum). 

have a lovely night, and keep an eye on my posts. if i have time between knitting and my job, i may take some requests for gallifreyan quotes later on.

The Deathflakes have begun.

So I've talked about how I was intimidated by mittens on either this blog or another one, it all blurs together. Well, regular mittens are nothing compared to the beast of the Selbu mitten chart. And, well, I call it a beast, but that's just because I'm not that advanced a knitter, yet here I am. I'm not 100% sure how to read the chart at all; I'm just hoping that I'll use the right kinds of decreases and that those long side bits work the way I think (hope) they work. Seriously, I'm gonna be winging this whole thing. I'm even going to used worsted weight as the stitch holders for the thumbs! Wild, I know!

The worst that can happen is that I frog the first one and end up not finishing by the time I need to. The best is that they turn out all right. So here's hoping!

Okay yeah, there’s a 70% chance I’ll spend a day during my winter break dyeing yarn to look like it’s speckled with blood because apparently that’s not normally a thing that other knitters want.

Also, I've spent the past hour and a half or so on Knit Picks and if I wasn't preparing for a big trip, I'd have spent my whole paycheck before even getting it.
