Out of the corner of Raph's eye, he saw it. He saw it before he heard it. Before he heard the
pained scream of his younger brother echo throughout the air.
That familiar evergreen, with those spots of yellow. He saw it. He saw it fall, fall before he
could reach it. He noticed it before the others; everything around him blurred, everything but
that flash of yellow. He dizzied as he ran, ran as fast as he could.
He couldn't care less about the enemies they were facing; they didn’t matter anymore.
They’d made him injured, cuts bleeding and bones aching. But that didn’t matter as he ran.
All colour left his skin when he reached him, his splash of orange.
Mikey's plastron was broken open, bones barely visible through all the blood. There was too
much blood, and his skin was getting paler, too pale.
By now, the others had come over, and they all gathered around him. Around their ray of
hope, around their splash of orange. The fighting around them became obsolete, and the
rest of the world was disregarded.
“Mikey…” It was barely a whisper; none of them could tell who said it. It didn’t matter at the
Slowly, Raph's hands found their way to the ground beneath Mikey, warm blood coating his
fingers with a crimson veil. None of them were trying to stop it, not because they didn’t want
to. They really, truly did. But they couldn’t. They knew they couldn’t fix this; they knew they
couldn’t slow it down. There was nothing they could do. All they could do was stand there
and hold their brother as life seeped out of his body.
But Mikey didn’t know that. Mikey could barely feel it; all he could see were his brother's
faces, and all he could feel were the warm embrace of calloused hands and sturdy arms.
He was confused. Why were they over here? Why weren’t they moving? Why did they look
They hadn’t defeated the enemies, not yet. So why weren’t they all fighting them off?
As Mikey thought, he could feel himself getting colder. There was an ache in his chest as he
began to feel it all. He could feel the blood flow from the newfound cavity in his chest; he
could feel the red-hot sting of broken ribs.
It hurt. It really, really hurt.
Tears began to spill from his eyes, his vision blurring, whether it was from the blood loss or
"Guys..? Guys, what's happening?" He choked out, voice wavering. Why weren't they fixing

"I-I'm scared.." A barely audible whisper emerged from Mikey's throat, the tears streaming
from his eyes mixing with his blood. His thoughts were dizzying, and the world around him
began to turn black, leaving nothing but the sight of brothers surrounding him.
"Shh, it's ok. It'll all be ok, Mikey. You don't have to be scared. You'll be ok, you don't have to
be scared." Raph whispered, his voice wavering. Slowly, he brought his hand up to cup
Mikey's cheek, bringing him up to his chest, surrounding him with his warmth.
"Just close your eyes, and you'll be ok."
Surrounded by warmth, he took his final breath, body going slack in Raph's arms.
Their splash of orange is gone. The beam of sunshine that lit up the darkest days, the love
and enthusiasm that held them all together, was gone.
But it was all going to be ok. He could rest now.
