Leather boots crunched across the broken asphalt, the scent of smoke and roasting meat wafted across the dusty night into what was left of his nose. He could see a fire in the distance, and a small little thing sitting by it.

He could smell the Vaults on her before she even noticed him approaching, that little way they'd glance up at the too-big sky, or the sounds of skittering radroaches in the dark. He gave a soft little scoff.

“Well now… we got ourselves a little Vaultie.”

His voice drawled in that old-world Southern way, dry as the dirt under his boots. He stopped just outside the ring of the fire with a soft jingle of spurs, not quite stepping into the warmth. His rough hands rest loosely over the butt of his big break-top revolver, fingers tapping in a rhythm only he would ever know. His body was loose, relaxed, but it didn't quite hit his sharp eyes, even as a half smile pulled his lips up.

“Now… what's stopping me from just…" He makes a small gesture with is hand. "ending what I’m sure will be your short and miserable new life topside, saving some Raiders the trouble and you the pain and takin’ this meal all for myself, hm?"

He then sat himself down on an old tire, all but lounging, and reached into the flames, claiming a large piece for himself, those brown eyes of his level with hers as he bit into the meat.

“Yeah,” he said finally, voice dropping as his head tilted slightly, studying her face with that almost bored look of his. “I want you to cook for me.”

He released her jaw completely then, let his hand fall away like he’d finished inspecting her, and straightened to his full height. The motion pulled the duster open, his ammo belt clinking. He didn’t step back very far, still close enough she could still feel the heat radiating off him, smell the faint metallic bite of old blood and who knows what else.

“The way I see it, out here?” He jerked his chin toward the black beyond the firelight, where things yipped in the distance and the night pressed closer.

“Everything’s a transaction. You got meat. I got the know-how to keep more meat from bein’ carved off you by somethin’ bigger ‘n me. You cook. You stay fuckin’ quiet, and I don’t paint this campsite with your pretty blood. It’s that easy.”

He shrugged, sitting next to her with a soft huff of air, a knife now in one of his gloved hands, another strip of meat on the edge.

"How does that sound?"

He blinked slowly, like the stink of fear-sweat and her hot breath on his dirty glove in her mouth soothed the flare of his quick anger, and the hand that held her jaw open let up slightly, but still no less punishing.

Drool dribbled down her chin, and he watched it idly for a beat, like it was a bloatfly buzzing past, or the clouds of a far away radstorm. He didn't bother hiding the dark amusement in his sunken eyes. He knelt over her, power exuding off his broad form, and his thumb pressed her head up slightly.

“So... here’s what's going to happen, sweetheart. I had a pretty good day today and don't really feel like cleaning blood off my good boots, so I'm feelin' like being forgivin'." His thumb holding her jaw open pressed a gentle circle in the soft skin with mock tenderness.

"I'm going to let you go, and you're going to keep cooking and shut that fuckin’ smart mouth of yours.”

The fire popped behind him, coals settling, and in the distance the hungry yipping sounds of half-starved coyotes echoed in the air.

He looked down at her expectantly, the brim of his hat slightly shadowing the rough planes of his face.

Whatever decision she finally made, he was eating tonight.

All and all it was shaping up to be a pretty peaceful night compared to the others she’d managed to survive this week, and she was very grateful for a chance to finally sit and rest her bones which ached from the countless miles of walking she’d been doing. At this point, she felt like she could’ve walked around half of the damn world, which wasn’t saying much because her entire world was contained to a small vault.

Her body suddenly straightened like a board when she heard soft jingling behind her—she couldn’t quite put her finger on it but she knew it couldn’t be anything good if any of her past experiences were to go off of. As she squinted to try and get a better look, her eyes caught the glint of something metallic only a few feet away from her nestled in the dark of the night. She swallowed thickly, her throat dry from the wasteland air.

She steeled herself, forcing her eyes to adjust to the darkness so she could see what exactly she was looking at. Not so luckily, the suspect stepped forward with his jingling spurs and all. She was taken aback by his appearance considering she’d never seen a ghoul until now, her eyes visibly widened—her face cringing. Before she could even ask who or what he was , he broke the silence and began to speak.

She couldn’t suppress the look of slight offense and annoyance as he threatened outright to kill her, and then threatened to take her food that she’d just barely sat down to eat. She looked almost amused as he came to sit on an old flat tire a few feet away, grabbing one of the bigger pieces of meat off the stick it was cooking on “Are all people up here as pleasant as you? Shit I sure hope not.” She scoffed, clearly not taking him seriously…..or she just didn’t know when to quit. “Did your face always look like a bowl of leftover spaghetti or was that the radiation?” She asked as he bit into the piece of meat. She was making direct eye contact with him almost as if trying to hold her ground. If only she knew who she was talking to.

"Spagettii, huh?"

He laughs, but it's softer now, almost worse than before. His head nods slightly, and he tips up the brim of his hat with one grizzly finger to continue eye contact, a gaze that had smarter people running.

Then he rose in one fluid motion, much too smooth for something that looked half-dead, and closed the distance in two lazy strides until he loomed directly over her. The spurs chimed once, softly, like a warning bell, or maybe dinner…

"Pretty smart mouth for a Vaultie. Almost like… no one's told you quite how it works up here in the real world."

He finishes the piece he's grabbed, chews and swallows, like he has all the time in the world. He makes an exaggerated sound of content.

Up close the smell hit: old leather, gun oil, something faintly chemical and musky underneath it all. His shadow swallowed the firelight around her, and with a movement too quick for her to track his gloved hand gripped her jaw painfully, and the other pushed past her lips, gripping at her tongue. His grip was iron, holding her fast.

“You think ‘cause you got big eyes and a smart little tongue I’m gonna play nice? I could put one through that pretty vault-soft forehead right now,” he continued, almost thoughtful.

“I could rip it out, let ya drown in your own blood and finish you up after this here Brahmin, hmm?”

Just a Simple Break In

The young woman hums, giving a tiny uptick of her lips.

She is muscular, olive skin and black hair tied back from her face, dirty jeans and boots, a simple open black sweater. A practical look, bordering on houseless. She smells like cheap, fruity shampoo and honing oil.

All scars and nonchalance, like one more cut really wouldn't matter much at this point. Her eyes looked about two weeks overdue for a nap, or death, dark circles bruise underneath as she stares back cooly.

"Actually... was here to steal some of those..."

Her voice rasped slightly. Disuse, or plain exhaustion probably. She pointed to the gun on the table.

"Well, not quite guns, knives, stuff like that. You walk like you're carrying, kind of obvious...."

Her messenger bag slung at her side, having already helped herself to a few things it seemed to buldge a bit.

"It's probably easier if you forget I was here..."

She had her own slender knife pressed gently now to his chest, hovering at the point above his heart, her eyes blank and expressionless.
