"Okay okay. I can do this I've got this." Steve was shuffling about on the spot of the changing room where he had gone to find Bucky to tell him he was finally going to talk to Tony Stark. The school genius, the most gorgeous boy in the school. 

"Stop panicking and go do it," Bucky said, both amused and supportive. For months he had listened to Steve talking about wanting to ask Tony out and he was glad that Steve was finally at least brave enough to talk to him. It had to be a start. "Go get your man" 

Steve's cheeks pinkened. "He's not…" 

"he won't ever be if you don't talk to him." Bucky said and gave Steve a gentle shove in the direction of the changing room door. 

Steve stumbled a little but caught his balance before heading out of the door. He took a deep breath before walking out of the sports centre and across the school grounds. Tony was on his own, sitting on a bench with his head buried in his tablet. 

"Hey, Rogers." 

Steve had been so focused on convincing himself to keep walking towards Tony that he hadn't noticed the other look up and at him. His heart raced hearing Tony's voice. And Tony was smiling. At him. That smile, God, Steve felt like he was melting. 

What he wasn't doing was moving or talking or literally anything. Come on Steve. Say something. Don't let him think you're a complete idiot. 

"You alright there?" there was a hint of amusement in Tony's voice but maybe also something like genuine concern. 

Steve only nodded before bolting back to the sports centre and into the changing room. He rested his head against the wall and let out a small whine of annoyance. 

"That was quick. What the hell happened?" Bucky asked. 

"He smiled at me and I froze. I fucking froze." Steve complained. 

Bucky laughed. And when Steve turned and shot him a look he forced a frown. "Sorry but come on buddy. You need to get it together when it comes to him. You know there's gonna be people lining up to ask him, home comings only in a few weeks."

"Can't you ask him for me?" Steve asked, needy but not particularly hopefully. 

"Absolutely not. Come on. You can do this." Bucky took Steve by the shoulders and pushed him out the changing rooms. 

The other side of the door was Tony Stark, one hand up as if he had been about to push open the door. "Oh. Hey." he moved his hand smoothly through his hair as if this had always been his plan. "You left before I could ask. You wanna go to the homecoming dance together?" 

Steve's mouth open and closed several times like a fish but no words commuted from his brain to him mouth. Luckily bucky was on hand. "He would love to. And he'll have learnt how to talk by then as well, right stevie?" 

Steve just nodded enthusiastically.
