Meet Dick Henmi. He was the designer behind that famous building on Grand Blvd. in St. Louis, the so-called “Flying Saucer.” But the winding story behind what brought him to St. Louis goes back much farther. His journey started in 1942, when his family was forced from their home in California to live in a Japanese American internment camp. That’s was 75 years ago. Listen/read his story here.

It’s really important to have uncomfortable conversations again and again and again. I think admitting where you’ve misstepped and mistakes you’ve made and keeping on trying to do better is really important. I heard from a lot of women of color who aren’t going to go. It is not up to me as a white woman to tell them why they should show up. It’s up to me to shut up and listen to their concerns and, for me, still go and do the work of fighting for them. It is important to me to include all those opinions and voices as much as I can.

These are the ruins of St. Louis in 1849 after a fire, which burned for 11 hours, came up from the steamboats on the Mississippi onto the city’s shores. Only three people died, but countless damage was done to the growing urban area.
Fun fact: At the same time this disaster was occurring, St. Louis was also witnessing its largest cholera epidemic EVER which killed 1 out of 11 people in St. Louis.

As the U.S. homicide rate continues to rise — in the country's 56 biggest cities, homicides jumped 17 percent in 2015 — the Department of Justice on Wednesday released a paper, authored by UMSL criminology professor Rick Rosenfeld, about what avenues of research the DOJ should pursue in order to understand the spike.
St. Louis is part of that 56 cities metric, and St. Louis’ increase in homicides in 2015 was part of Rosenfeld’s “Top Ten.” There was an 18 percent increase in homicide in 2015 on top of a 32 percent increase in 2014. St. Louis is actually at the bottom of that top ten list, after Baltimore, Chicago, Houston, Milwaukee, Cleveland, Washington, Nashville, Philadelphia and Kansas City.
