I shot through to the UK/Europe at the start of August after submitting my PhD. So screen printing is on the back burner but I have been taking bulk photos. So there’s that.

In a move that’s been equal parts terrifying and awesome, I packed up my thesis and flew it to Hong Kong last week. I’m due to submit in a week, but was offered the chance to teach intensively over 2 weeks.
Apart from being insanely busy now, I’ll be pursuing other adventures post-PhD and tumblr probably won’t get much a look-in during that time. To follow the next chapter, you can find me at https://www.instagram.com/str8andarrow/
Things have been quiet lately, and they’re about to get quieter. Straight & Arrow will be on hiatus until late December. There are some big things on the horizon that will be occupying my time and energy for the next few months. But more on that later.

Paddling around Cowarr, East Gippsland
I finished this project off a few months ago, just in time for summer to finish and to start on a four-wheel drive project with a mate. I was looking through Gumtree (Australia’s Craigslist) for kayaks and found this one cheap about 4km from my house. I couldn’t resits the vintage style and within 40 minutes it was in the shed. I spent a little bit of time fibreglassing it, basically repairing some cracks and some old half-arsed repairs. I used some marine ply to bend a seat into shape that could be hinged to fit dry bags behind it, then set about painting it. There was a lot of discussion about colour. The cream base made it look quite nice, but I decided to try my hand at painting tooling woodgrain into the brown coat of paint. For a first attempt at repairing and painting a kayak, I’m pretty happy with it. Which was something that was quite obvious last night by the ‘shit eating grin’ I had while we paddled up the Thompson River during sunset.
Finally got to take the wood-painted kayak out for its proper maiden voyage. Winter may not be the best time for kayaking, but last night proved that it certainly isn’t the worst. That is, until one of the group smashed their hull on some rocks and ends up with a kayak-submarine hybrid.
Making some last minute touch ups with my cute assistant and Kirsten on a few designs that we prototyped a few weeks ago.
Winter workshop vibes
Finishing off a few odd jobs for a couple of exceptionally rad and supportive customers. This is a small display stand made from old roof beams and screenprinted for Lone Society Co.
I’m becoming restless from being stuck inside, but there are big things on the horizon. Just need to keep on keepin’ on.
