Congratulations to EVAN PETERS on his first Emmy win for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie as Colin Zabel in Mare of Easttown.
#so did they miss the part where gatsby ends up floating dead in a pool and all the miserable deaths in wuthering heights#or did they miss that because there weren’t any chapters titled In Which The Sinners Are Punished For Their Errors#like. even if you require explicit moral instruction from literature it’s pretty hard to miss the comeuppance in those.
“What I assume my teachers were trying to teach me”
Huck Finn is about a white Southern boy who was raised to believe that freeing slaves is a sin that would send you directly to hell who forges a familial bond with a runaway slave and chooses to free him and thereby in his mind lose his salvation because he refuses to believe that his best friend and surrogate father is less of a man just because he’s black. Yes it features what we now consider racial slurs but this is a book written only 20 years after people were literally fighting to be allowed to keep other human beings as property, we cannot expect people from the 1880s to exactly conform with the social mores of 2020, and more to the point if we ourselves had been raised during that time period there’s very little doubt that we would also hold most if not all of the prevalent views of the time because actual history isn’t like period novels written now where the heroes are perfect 21st century social justice crusaders and the villains are all as racist and sexist as humanly possible. Change happens slowly and ignoring the radical statement that we’re all human beings that Twain wrote at a time when segregation and racial tensions were still hugely prevalent just because he wrote using the language of his time period is short-sighted and foolhardy to the highest degree.
I’m really kind of alarmed at the rise in the past few years of the “and we do condemn! wholeheartedly!” discourse around historical figures. it seems like people have somehow boomeranged between “morals were different in the past, therefore nobody in the past can ever be held accountable for ANY wrongs” to “morals are universal and timeless, and anything done wrong by today’s standards in the past is ABSOLUTELY unforgiveable” so completely, because social media 2.0 is profoundly allergic to nuance
please try this on for size:
there have always been, in past times as today, a range of people in every society, some of whom were even then fighting for a more just and compassionate accord with their fellow man and some of whom let their greeds and hatreds rule them to the worst allowable excesses. the goal of classics and history education is to teach you enough context to discern between the two, not only in the past but in the present
My mind just boggles at the “There’s Racism In That Book” argument. Yes, there is racism in that book, because that book is ABOUT RACISM. The message is that it is BAD.
My high school English teacher, who was a viciously brilliant woman, used to say that when people banned Huck Finn they said it was about the language, but it was really the message they were trying to ban, the subversive deconstruction of (religious) authority and white supremacy.
A book or work of art could also have absolutely nothing redeeming about it. Everything about it is problematic, critics all agree its an abomination. Yet it would STILL be worth consuming in some way because, like it or not, these works are often culturally and historically important. Even if for no other reason than to say ‘at this point in time, where and when it was written, this was a viewpoint, this happened. Lets not forget.’
Art is not created in a vacuum.
We need to be able to consume the problematic so we can make informed decisions about our future by having a foundation from the past. “We’re only allowed to read wholesome content from 2021″ is a good way to learn nothing about anything.
In my experience with this issue, it’s a problem with people not understanding how to identify if people are genuinely trying to do good. Because a lot of people, and increasingly so, think that if someone is doing good imperfectly, that’s still all bad.
Hence, a book about anti-racism using SLURS is ABOUT RACISM BEING GOOD! Idiots.
People need to be held accountable, yes. But “cancel culture” isn’t about holding people accountable. It’s about “you tried to do good, but it wasn’t perfect.”
*ricochet shot*
This shit isn’t even cancel culture. This is straight up bad media literacy.
Social media pushes the idea of false dichotomies in every aspect of critique and criticism, which severely limits the ability to have meaningful discussions about anything. It’s practically impossible to have a nuanced opinion because everyone has this idea of “Well, if you don’t agree with me 100%, you must agree with the other side 100%” even if you don’t. Example: “If you say Huckleberry Finn is a product of its time and not problematic for using racial slurs, then you must think that racism and racial slurs are okay!” And it’s so frustrating because the internet could’ve been such a good place for nuanced debates about the complexities of content and morals and applying modern morals to past content and holding people accountable while also accepting that times change, people change, and we learn best from making mistakes.
I see some people never grew out of their “the curtains were fucking blue” phase
They had me til the last panel. I don't get why it's traced in red.

Y'all are so excited about SOAD's new song but do you know WHY they came back after so many years? Our homeland, Armenia, is under attack by Turkey and Azerbaijan and we're facing a second genocide. System Of A Down are Armenian and they wrote a song about the horrors we're facing.
Seeing all of you being so happy about this song makes me feel warm and proud... but just so you'd know this song is about a genocide my people are facing right now.
I don’t study genocides war crimes and human rights for fun. I study it bc my people have been at the foot from the very first genocide of the 20th century and previous attempts to exterminate my entire race. The fact that no one is speaking up when another genocide is at the brink of occurring to the ethnic Armenians living in Artsakh (Nagorno Karabakh) is mind blowing. I have to say I’m not surprised by the lack of effort - Americans, especially, are the most self interested humans I’ve met. This isn’t about narrative, this is about rapid belligerent individualism. We can philosophize all day about it but at the end - people don’t give a shit about anyone but themselves. There is rarely any altruism left in this world. As Monte said, no ones gonna fight for us, we will have to fight on our own to survive. The alternative is not an option.
@sarinezeitlian on IG for the photos
I’m sure everyone is sick of seeing political posts, this isn’t political, it’s a humanitarian crisis! And it’s not only happening “somewhere else” anymore!
Armenians are being attacked in the streets of my country!!Why is there not national outrage, or a movement rising up?? Where is anyone outside of the Armenian population screaming for equality? A genocide is literally taking place RIGHT NOW but you all would rather get upset and put your energy into candidates who are literally doing nothing of substance to help this situation while schools, hospitals and civilian homes are destroyed.
In 1915 no one cared about Armenia either, they watched as these same instigators marched women, children and elderly out into the desert with the sole intention of none of them making it back home, this is after murdering the men and those strong enough to fight back in front of their families. The term genocide was coined solely because of this tragedy! An entire culture almost wiped from the planet, and people still say we are overreacting!
Don’t allow this to happen again, don’t be someone who sits back as an entire country and culture are facing the threat of a SECOND GENOCIDE!!!! Please, wake up, do something, spread the news, because it could be me or my family being targeted tomorrow.
The world failed Armenia again.
The blue lands have been taken from the indigineous people by azerbaijani forces during war.
The red lands are going to be occupied by azerbaijan too after the “agreement”.
The green lands are the only ones we have left.
We lost almost 70% of our land. The indigenous people - armenians, lost 70% of their land in modern world, 2020, just to avoid SECOND genocide and extermination. People lost their homes, their culture, churches and everything they’ve built for so long.
This is a fucking joke. The international human rights organisations are a big fucking joke. A cruel one at that.
I’m mourning because the world failed my people again and let a second genocide happen.
Please share this information so more people know just how fucked up the situation in Armenia is.
