So here's another thing I like about monsters. They instantly reshape any reality that they enter, because everyone who was in it before they saw the creature, whatever it is, now must consider a new world. One where they and the monster exist at the same time, and no matter what they do with that revelation, their reality is never the same again. There's no going back to the time before the fog rolled in, before the coffin yawned open, before the full moon threw its light on the wrong man. I just think that's neat.

well see it can do the work of the colon, the semicolon, or the parenthesis with more speed and less formality than any of these, plus you can use it to capture the stream-of-consciousness effect of a comma splice with much less loss of clarity. sort of an all-purpose punctuation for the casual yet elaborate written construct.
