"Why would you need to use a gun for self defense" is a question only asked by people who have not been meaningfully threatened with physical violence by someone physically superior to them.

Firearms are an equalizing force that level the playing field. They allow shorter, skinnier, weaker, and less able-bodied individuals to guarantee uncontested lethality over larger, more physically dominant threats.

Why do I concealed carry? Because I know I'm not going to beat that 6'4" 230lb skinhead who wants me dead, in a fistfight. And no matter who you are you'll either die in the ambulance or the gutter in a knife fight. I carry because it makes me just as lethal as they are, if not moreso.
