The ancient world was full of textile masterpieces we can only imagine… but most of them have rotted away. So few of them have come down to us in these days that we think of metal and stone as the primary mediums for the oldest artworks. But there were tapestries and fabric work that would have rivaled the finest wrought gold and iron and the first cave paintings.
This is a incredibly rare find. A ball of yarn made from stinging nettle fibers in the Late Neolithic (5900 years old) in what’s now Marin-Epagnier in Switzerland. The thread has been preserved by being carbonized. Look at how much thread that is! And how fine and even it is spun! The skill going into this is absolutely incredible. Imagine the incredible textile work that must’ve been made with that. For a reference here’s a ball of nettle yarn I managed to make with a drop spindle. That took me 300 hours of work.
OOooh, we are going to be visiting Switzerland later this summer and we are so going to the Laténium where that old ball of yarn is housed. I can’t wait.

Hey people who have several pets, with obvious differences in intelligence levels: How did you figure out that one of them is smarter than the other? What do they do?
There are a lot of things that lead me to think my elder cat is unusually intelligent compared to other felis domesticus I have known (understands pointing, can open every door and cabinet in the house except the ones with round knobs or that I added child locks to, understands enough English to know from a phone conversation that a stranger is coming to the house) but in terms of specifically comparing one to the other, there was The Case Of The Mousey Puzzle Box.
When we got our younger cat Skadi, her favorite toy was (still is, but she's calmed down with age) the rattley mouse. She would bring the mouse to be thrown for fetch so many times that not even two human adults in the house could keep up with her. So my partner started making puzzle boxes to put the rattley mouse in that would occupy her for longer.
So, we have a setup: mouse is in the puzzle box, puzzle box is on the floor, younger cat is trying to resolve the puzzle box, elder cat is sitting on the cat tree observing all this. Skadi spends about fifteen minutes trying and failing to get the mouse out of the box. She sticks her paw into the holes. She sticks her nose into the holes. She pushes the box to and fro on the carpet. She meows beseechingly for a human to come solve the problem. Sticks her paws into the holes again.
Finally, she gives up on the puzzle box and wanders over to see if there's any food to be had. As soon as she walks away the elder cat gets up from the cat tree, big stretch, jumps down, walks over to the puzzle box, hooks a paw under the edge and flips the whole thing over, spilling the mouse onto the floor.
Gives the younger cat a look of utter disgust as if to say "That's all you had to do!" and then walks away, utterly uninterested in actually playing with the toy.
Older cat just subjected to fifteen minutes worth of those horrible mobile game ads where the player is failing really badly to make you want to play.
one time I went over to a friend's house and their housemate was making paper in the living room, and we saw this big tub full of water they were using to dissolve old scrap paper into a slurry, and everyone was immediately like "oh, you need scrap paper?" and started turning out their jacket pockets and producing expired coupons and bus tickets and crumpled receipts and old shopping lists and whatever else they'd been carrying round with them for no good reason, and passing it all to the paper-making housemate to make sure it was suitable before it got torn up and dropped into the tub, while people took turns stirring the slurry with a big wooden stick. it was strangely ritualistic, like presenting an offering to some kind of temple elder for inspection before placing it in a watery shrine to be devoured and reformed. pulp for the pulp god.
Tbh I think the "but data centers are important infrastructure, not just AI" talking point misses that like
Ok so roads are important infrastructure. A lot of stuff that's important happens on roads. Now, let's imagine that quadrillionaire Matt Stench has decided that the next big tech innovation is the Wide Car. It's a car that takes up six lanes despite seating only one passenger.
The Wide Car is supposed to be the future, and everyone's going to be driving Wide Cars, even though nobody who makes Wide Cars is turning a profit. Employers are offering Wide Cars as an employee benefit, and getting "nah." Some employers are going as far as demanding their employees drive Wide Cars, and the result is that people take time out of their workdays to get in the mandatory gas usage for their Wide Car before driving home in a regular car.
In spite of the fact that the Wide Car is clearly set to fail, there's an enormous push to expand to twelve-lane roads to accommodate a bunch of Wide Cars that simply will not materialize. This is not an organic response to demand, but a speculative investment that amplifies the existing issues with road development for no good reason.
That is the problem.
Oh and the road infrastructure project is buying up resources other people could have used for literally anything else. With money they promise they'll be making from Wide Car sales any day now.
Okay so what I'm getting from the notes is that when you try to transplant some techbro nonsense into an offline equivalent, you have to be careful to avoid simply inventing something the Americans are already doing in real life

I keep trying to like red wine like a grown-up but like … it’s rotten grapes, guys. You can drink things that don’t taste like rotten grapes. Why
Okay I don’t know when this post is from (I came across it stalking multiple blogs). But in case this might help, here is a brief science/wine lesson.
To start off, some facts:
-White wine is made from sweet pulp inside of the grape (minus the seeds).
-Red wine is made from both the skin and the grape (and the seeds and stems…sometimes? Can’t remember).
-Tannin is the substance found in red wines, coffee, dark chocolate. Tannins are responsible for the bitter taste in those foods.
-Tannins are found in the skin of the grape, as well as the seeds and the stems. Therefore, most red wines will have tannins, versus most whites will not have tannins.
-Red wines vary in level of tannins, depending on variety of grape, climate, and fermentation process. Pinot noir tends to be very low tannin. Shiraz/Syrah, choice of poison for our beloved brunette surgeon, is very heavy on the tannins.
-Some white wines (most commonly Chardonnay) are aged in oak barrels instead of metal containers. Oak barrels have tannins, which seeps into the wine during the fermentation process. That’s why Chardonnays tend to be “drier” aka it has tannins.
-White wines like Sauvingnon Blancs are usually fermented in steel barrels (aka no tannins. Aka usually very fruity and light and sweet).
Your ability to taste tannins is genetic.
There is a genetic marker determining whether your taste cells are sensitive to tannins.
Basically two people can drink the exact same wine and have wildly different reactions because: 1. Person A can’t taste tannins, so they taste the actual wine flavor. 2. Person B can taste tannins, and that tends to overpower ALL the other flavors in the wine. Basically all they taste is tannins and none of the wine.
I am super tannin sensitive, so if I drink a wine like Cabernet Sauvignon (very tannin heavy, aka “very dry”, it tastes like bitter ethanol alcohol to me, whereas my best friend can’t taste tannins so the same wine is maybe a little bitter but they can actually taste the grape and different flavors. To her, a wine like Sauv Blanc is too sweet, tastes like sugar water. But to me it tastes good.
So unless it’s the taste of the alcohol or all wines you hate, chances are you might hate the taste of red wine, especially the heavier red wines, because taste the tannin overpowers everything else. And all you taste is bitter bitter ethanol bitter more ethanol.
More tannin info: -Tannins bind to fat.
-This is why tannin heavy wines are recommended with fatty foods (Shiraz and steak). Whenever you eat food with high fat content, the fat builds up on your tongue. A sip of red wine will bind with the fat on your tongue and clear it away. That’s why the sip of wine between bites of fat heavy foods is considered a palate cleanser.
-By that logic, this is why white wines are recommended with low fat foods, like fish. Salmon is fattier than most fish, which is why Chardonnay (tannin heavy white wine) or Pinot Noir (low tannin red wine) is recommended with salmon.
-People who are sensitive to tannins can drink tannin heavy red wines with fatty food and generally the wine won’t taste gross. The fat on your tongue (from that steak) will bind with the tannin and neutralize the tannin taste. Aka the only time I ever drink Cabernet Sauvignon or Shiraz is with a steak or heavy, creamy pasta. Aka never bc I don’t often eat either.
-The reason dairy helps coffee taste better is because the fat in milk/creams binds with the tannins in coffee and neutralizes the bitter taste. This is why people who can’t taste tannins can generally drink coffee black without milk (sugar is a different story). It’s also why almond milk in coffee is the worst idea (almond milk is already bitter and has no fat).
More wine facts: -90% of the “aromas” of wine are marketing BS
-You know the labels that say like “cherry with a hint of blackberry?” There’s no real way to infuse cherry or blackberry into grape wine without screwing with the fermentation process. It’s all created by the wine marketing industry to sell you win. Sometimes if you smell cherry before you drink the wine, you might taste it in the wine (because majority of flavor comes from smell). Or if you think there is cherry flavor in the wine, your brain can trick your taste buds into tasting it.
-The only true flavors found in real grape wine are grapes (obviously), oak/earthy flavor (the barrels), vanilla (barrels, oak sticks), tannins. (There are a few others but can’t remember. I think maybe cinnamon?).
-People’s perception of wine often affect how good it tastes to them. Social psychology studies show that people will rate the exact same wine differently if they’re told the wines are different in price. (They rated the more expensive wine as tastier).
tl;dr Whether you can taste tannins is genetic. Exact same wines taste different for different people depending on your genetic makeup. If you’re sensitive to tannins, red wines won’t taste like anything other than bitter alcohol. Genetics/tannins are why people generally have preferences for red or whites.
this is extremely informative and i have learned a thing about myself, which is that i CLEARLY inherited the tannin-tasting genes from my teatotaling mother and not from my dad who subsists entirely on espresso and cabernet sauvignon.
I suddenly understand why my goddad can drink black coffee and those wretched tasting dry wines and think they taste good.
Black tea also has tannins, so if you - like me - need to drink it with cream and don’t brew it nearly as long as tea aficionados say in scandalized tones you ought to, because otherwise it’s too bitter, you uh. might be sensitive to tannins.
I think that dark roast coffee has more tannins than light roast; I know for certain it requires a good deal more cream/milk to balance out the bitter/burnt taste.
Like, I think re-contextualising internalised misogyny as simply being about the hatred of women has impacted how people understand the harmful rhetoric spread by TERFs like JK Rowling and how she upholds patriarchal systems, because whenever JK Rowling’s beliefs are mentioned, it’s usually under the impression that they come solely from her own internalised misogyny, and therefore, that she just hates women.
There is a disturbing amount of people who “joke” about JK Rowling being a closeted trans man because she seems to hate women so much, which is already incredibly transphobic towards trans men, but it also represents only half of the picture. JK Rowling’s hatred of maleness, manhood and masculinity also plays an extremely significant part in her ideology. She considers any association with men, any association with (perisexcis) male genitalia, or any association with masculinity as being inherently predatory, and any association with (white) women, (white) womanhood and (perisexcis) female genitalia as being inherently good and pure.
Hence why she campaigns so violently to keep trans women out of women’s spaces under the belief that it’s not possible to separate trans women from an imposed, societal boy or manhood (whether or not it was actually imposed in the way she thinks it was, or how that imposition can be incredibly harmful and dangerous for young trans girls), and also why so many of her targets are women of colour, because they do not fit into the white Western standards of womanhood and femininity that her beliefs are based on.
As for trans men, she advocates preventative measures to stop trans men from transitioning, under the belief that we’re confused girls trying to escape misogyny, and that it’s our internalised misogyny that leads us to transitioning at all. JK Rowling’s entire campaign is to separate “maleness” from “femaleness” because in her world, the two simply cannot mix. In her world, women are perpetual victims (misogyny) and men are inherent perpetrators (misandry) which— perhaps unbeknownst to her— is exactly what the patriarchy wants.
To negate the animosity towards masculinity and manhood that TERFs have is to negate a good portion of the pillars that patriarchy stands on. This idea that men and women have to be separated because they’re inherently opposed to each other, and that men simply cannot help themselves from being sexual predators because it’s wired into their male brains is… patriarchy 101. The cis men in power are laughing at how gullible TERFs are, quite frankly, and it’s disturbing how many so-called transfeminist leftists are also falling for it because they still want to find their own way of saying “women good and men bad.”
JK Rowling doesn’t hate women because she’s secretly a man, in fact, I don’t even think saying she “hates women” or “hates men” is accurate because that oversimplifies her actual mentality. She doesn’t think she hates women, because she advocates for the protection of women (even if her advocation is built on exclusion and transphobia) and she doesn’t think she hates men because she’s perfectly happy to cosy up to powerful cis men, and presumably she doesn’t hate her husband.
However, she is a deep deep believer of biology being a dictator of how a person acts, and this belief requires both misogynistic attitudes towards women and misandrist attitudes towards men, and if feminists in leftist spaces are only rejecting one of these beliefs, then you will still find yourself sitting at the same table as JK Rowling one day.

"Trans kids shouldn't be a priority talking point right now because they're less than 1% of the population."
... so its cool to legislate the crap out of a minority as long its a minority you dont care about. Ok cool cool cool.
Such a wild thing to say, too. If they're less than 1% of the population, we shouldn't be wasting time, money, and political will on legislation that only serves to hurt them while making life worse for the people it is supposedly trying to protect.
HRT should be available to everyone, whether it's a puberty blockers for a child who is starting puberty way too soon, a cis woman who is going through menopause, intersex people, or trans people wanting to transition. Or whatever other things I'm not thinking of right now.
It's a distraction from issues that affect 99% of us, but it's a distraction through getting people angry & afraid and harming people.
Especially with the trans kids in athletics ban because ove the total of 8 years allowing trans kids to play on teams that align with their identity, there have been less than twenty cases of it happening and ZERO cases of incidents related to it (trans athletes abusing teammates, having unfair advantages, getting awarded scholarships unfairly).
When i presented this info to the 'progressive' group, I got told that it was a distraction and we need to throw unwavering support behind a candidate that said unkind things about trans people and im like...
...yes, its a distraction, but i think it could have been handled better and yall. Have shown. Yall ass.
