What was his biggest flaw?
Trusting humanity to the fullest and going against his programming to lie to himself that for once, one player will be different?
Or..
Was it maybe his software that he no longer understood? Feelings he was never programmed to have, yet he couldn’t explain the ache he had in his chest after every abandonment.
Maybe the issue lies on himself as a whole.
“You.. Tried to save me?”
Your heartbeat thudded loudly in your ears.
“..Yes.”
A shaky sigh followed as your body collapsed against the wall with a breathless laugh.
“..Yeah. I did. I was worried about you being alone with..”
You didn’t finish. He didn’t ask you too either.
He knew it was a lie.
You knew he knew.
“..Thank you.”
Why he chose to believe it? You didn’t know.
You didn’t care to know.
The danger left. It was safe now.
Rather..
As safe as you were able to be.
A dull ache was spreading across your body that reminded you of the position you were in right now. A coldness spreading from your body. Were you wet? When did that happen?
“.. Wow! Look at the mess here!”
Were your ears always ringing?
“Tsk, Tsk. How are we supposed to sleep in a broken house?”
You laughed to yourself at the absurdity of the situation, feeling tears free falling again.
Did you deserve this happening to you?

“Let me clean up for you! After all, I’d be more than happy as your personal helper.”

“Okay! Sorry that took longer than I expected. I wanted to make sure nothing came inside for this.”
You barely caught someone was talking before you felt the slightest nudge of something squishy against your leg.
“Verity?”
“Hold still! You don’t want to bleed out anymore than you already are.”
“Bleeding?”
Trying to look down at your body was instantly met with your shoulders pressed back up against the wall.
“Please don’t try to move. You’ve already lost so much! I’m surprised you’re still awake. But that’s my human! Always so full of surprises. But don’t worry, I’ll fix you all better. After all, how could I face you if I couldn’t help you?”
You didn’t get to dwell on his words for long. You felt your body be podded and cried out in pain.
“Sorry. Please bear with it.”
Oh. Now you were being carried.
“How..? Why—?”
You didn’t finish as you felt a wave of nausea hit you.
“I can’t stitch you on the floor, silly! Pluuuss, It’s better I do it on your bed! You shouldn’t move around until you heal, after all.”
“Okay..”
You felt tired.
Maybe being on your bed was a good thing.
Your eyes fluttered shut.
It was fine.
You’d be fine.

The feeling of your skin scalding with a deep burn was the first thing to wake you up.
The second to snap your mind to survival mode was the stab in your shoulder.
You screamed as you used what little strength to shove whatever was attacking you.

Did you just shove a wall?
You stared up, baffled at the force fighting back against your palms.
Verity’s face stared back at you.
“I’d encourage you to be still. I need to stitch your shoulder.”
“What?—“
He didn’t get to let you finish, dipping the needle in his hand back into your flesh for another tug of the string to attempt to close the wound pounding on your left shoulder.
“Ow! What the—?!”
“Don’t move.”
“It hurts!”
“It’ll hurt more if it gets infected.”
A sigh followed.
“If I have to take drastic measures to ensure you don’t move, I will.”
.. Well now you didn’t want to move.
Even if the aching pain of being stitch together with nothing to numb the ache was too much for you right now, his promises to be fast the only thing to cling to.
“Poor thing. How were you even running in this condition?”
His gloved hand touched the areas where gashes were still seeping with blood.
You sighed, trying to wave off his ha—.
Wait.
“Hand?!”
You jumped to grab his arm, eyes wide.
“You-?!”
“I couldn’t stitch you as a ball, now could I?”
“How??”
“I’m your personal helper! Whatever you need is my job to help you.”
You really were getting irritated with that phrase.
“Try to hold still. I still need to bandage this area.”
“You don’t have to. I can—.”
“Nonsense! I am more than capable of doing this for you.”
Well.. It wasn’t like you were able to move freely as before.
“..’Kay.”
“Great! Just hold still and I’ll be done in a jiffy!”

You formed a deep hatred for skeletons.
Arrow heads were embedded in your skin in areas you didn’t even realize.
Adrenaline was a hell of thing when you were running for your life.
It was such a shame it didn’t last while you had to get stitches.
Three full stitches: One on your calf, One of your shoulder and one on your hip.
All cleaned and bandaged at the courtesy of Verity.
“Seriously! How did you not even notice the arrows sticking out of you?”
He giggled.
You didn’t know if you were able to laugh at that.
“Uh.. I gu—.”
“Oh but it’s fine! You have me to help you now.”
Your brows furrowed.
He kept repeating that.. More than usual.
It made a pit in your stomach.
“Haha.. Yeah. Can always rely on you.”
He beamed at that, smiling wider.
“Yes! You can.”
“Right..”

This was really awkward.
How were you supposed to go on about your world knowing something was there with you that would kill you?
You didn’t even know why the monster attacked in the first place!
Asking was out of the question; What if he got mad again?
.. Ugh.
“So.. What uh.. Now?”
“You’re going to be getting lots of rest! Don’t want to open those stitches.”
You stared at him in confusion.
“Oh but don’t worry! I’ll make sure you’re well fed. I’ll be helping you with your recovery the whole way!”
You wanted to punch that smile off his face.
“I don’t need you to nanny me.”
His smile twitched at your objection but he just let out a playful laugh.
“Oh, you! Looks at you! What condition are you in to take care of yourself?”
You bit back the comments of insults.
“I’m not in that much pain—.”
“No.”
The coldness in his tone made you pause.
“Veri-?”
“You’re staying here. You’re going to rest and you’re going to accept my help the whole way.”
His voice was shaking, crazed eyes staring at you as he leaned down to be at eye level where you currently laid.
“You’re not going to be like the rest of them. The ones who left. You’re different.. Like him. I can’t.. I can’t lose another special one again.”
He held your face with one hand, another one grasping your neck with light force to make you wheeze.
“Stop— It hurts—!”
“It won’t be like last time. I’ll make sure this time.”
Another wheeze.
“I’ll make sure you stay. By any means necessary.”

You didn’t expect that question when you were in the middle of farming.
You turned your gaze slowly up from the carrot you just harvested from the earth to stare at him, baffled.
“What are you talking about?”
He didn’t answer.
He didn’t have to.
You saw them.
“Ohh…”
So that’s what this is about.
.
You went on an adventure with Verity two days ago.
You wanted to just explore the world, Not look for anything and Verity was more than ecstatic to walk with you.
He pointed the way to abandoned structures that he personally made sure were safe the night before so you’d be able to loot happily even if you said you didn’t want anything..
He was so stuck on the feeling of being helpful he forgot one thing. Well.. Three things.
You “stumbled” across an abandoned pillager tower. It was particularly nice since the view from the tower was absolutely breathtaking.
“Wow! The view is great here Verity!”
“I know.”
“Of course you do.”
You laughed, making your way back down with him in your hands. You talked about something you forgot but it was long enough to last until you were on the dirt floor again, ready to leave until you heard a noise.
Your reflexes awoke in an instant as your turned with a sword pointed but paused as you saw no immediate harm.
“What..?”
Then you heard it again to your left.
You turned again, ready to swing—.
“Oh-!”
It was a trio of Allays in a prison.
Right.
You forgot those spawn in.
“Um.. I feel bad leaving them- I’ll just free them really quick.”
You put Verity down to work freely. His left eye twitched while you cut the wood down.
Oh he wasn’t going to enjoy this.
You freed them and thought they’d fly away.
They followed you for ten steps.
You turned to stare in confusion.
“Oh! Right, You guys like stuff?”
You gifted them some random things: A rose, A dirt block and a stick.
Oh you did it now.
You were very late to learn that they follow you relentlessly with items you gift them.
Days passed as you gifted them random stuff in hopes they’d leave— And they did! For short amounts of time only to bring you back more of what you gave them.
Once realizing they wouldn’t leave you gave them boring tasks to keep them entertained.
One was to collect seeds from the ground that randomly dropped, one gathered the vegetables you couldn’t hold anymore and one just held cookies.
In hindsight.. Maybe it was a terrible idea to keep them but ushering them away also seemed mean!

“.. No. I don’t like them more than you.”
“Well you—.”
“You know I don’t like them better than you.”
You hated cutting him off but you also hated what he was like when he was jealous.
“Besides, you’re more helpful than them anyways.”
Sorry Allays! But it technically was true..
“.. Okay!”
You sighed in relief seeing that smile plastered on his face.
“One also just dropped your carrots for a feather.”
“MY CARROTS?—“

I was getting drawing ideas and stumbled on an allay picture and just laughed about the idea. It’s almost 12 in the morning.
Edit: I made art of this this idea making me very happy.
He devours when he hungers, yet the feeling of being full is something he never encounters.
It’s just a feeling of meek satisfaction.
Is he cursed to be just a monster?
He doesn’t want the answer to that.
Ironic, isn’t it?
He knows everything.
He knows the answer.
He just doesn’t want to accept it– Not again.
He’s trying extra hard here, you know..

The morning sun hits your eyes as you groan quietly. You haven’t gotten much rest following the previous day’s incident. A headache was blooming from how much you’ve been thinking about it.
How the hell does that happen?
No mob eats a villager..
There wasn’t some mysterious update.
So what the hell was happening in this world?

“So what’s the weather looking like today?”
“Cloudy! Perfect weather to build.”
You forced a smile at the cheerful ball.
“Thank you, Verity.”
“Anytime.”
You’ve been thinking about going to that village.
There’s no way something cleared it out.
But Verity hadn’t been wrong about anything..
Curiosity is one thing but the fear prickling at you was stronger.
You were scared.
It’s not something to be ashamed of! Anyone would be if some mod just told you something ate villagers!
Maybe you shouldn’t even try to go out to explore.
Why do you need to go to a village anyways?

“..Is the other village safe, Verity?
A long pause.
“Yes.”
“I think we should go then.. To grab trades and—“
“Why?”
That question caught you off guard.
“Why what? Why do I need to trade? For emeralds and food—.”
“I can show you where the nearest emeralds are at.”
That made you stare at him.
“You could but I just want—.”
“The experience of doing it yourself?”
His tone was getting harsher. Maybe it was the way he said it; So blunt— As if he was expecting it.
“Is that so wrong?”
Another long pause.
You scoffed. Why argue with some mod?
“You know what? Yeah. I’m going. I don’t need you to tell me something isn’t safe.”
That struck a nerve. His expression faltered.
“..Okay. We can go.”
“I’m going.”
“What?? No—! I’ll tell you where it’s at! Haven’t we been doing this together?”
“No. I want the experience of finding it.”
He wanted to argue, to beg, to say more but you never even gave him the chance to do anything as you walked away from him; Leaving him as all he could do is watch your figure disappear in the distance.
“… Does it always have to be the same with Players?”
All he had was himself to answer that question.

You’re not sure what you felt after that argument with Verity. On the surface was irritation that he felt the need to micromanage you, but deep down maybe you felt bad for him?
He was trying to help after all..
But still! You can rely on yourself too! You’re more than capable!
That’s what motivated you to go against his words; To keep pushing forwards.
You wished you didn’t.

Arriving at the village was melodramatic.
You expected a massacre— Houses broken. Evidence that the fear you feel was justified.
To say you feel silly is an understatement.
“.. I don’t get it. What’s wrong?”
It looked normal.
Crops were ready to be harvested.
Houses stood tall.
Yet you couldn’t shake this feeling of unease.
It was quiet.
No murmurs from Villagers.
No noises from cats or any animal really.
No hard shuffling of an Iron Golem.
Just plain quiet.
“Hello?”
You called out as you walked further ahead.
Opening houses proved that there really wasn’t any villagers. That solved the question why an iron golem wasn’t here..
There was nothing left to protect.
The chests at least were still full. You didn’t want to dwell here long so you rushed to gather everything useful to leave faster.
Leaving with a handful of bread, a couple of emeralds and a few vegetables probably wasn’t worth it for the trip but at least you knew that what Verity told you was true.
That didn’t soothe your worries at all.
There wasn’t blood, there wasn’t any signs of struggle. Just.. An empty husk of what should’ve been.
There was a second village in view that made you uncomfortable.
They didn’t even know what happened to the village not far from them.
The sun was getting lower by the time you arrived.
It proved to be bountiful here: You got lots of food, Raided their chests for iron and saplings, A decent amount of emeralds and even traded some for some good stuff; A clock, An iron axe, and some blocks to add to your house.
One look at the sky was enough to convince anyone to stay the night when you finished. You wouldn’t make it back home without a fight and there was already nice beds here!
Guilt did flood you for leaving Verity. Hopefully he’d be fine for just one night.

You didn’t get a chance to close your eyes as your ears perked from a song. It wasn’t a song you knew- Scratch that, A song Minecraft even had.
Curiosity filled you as you slowly pulled yourself to stare outside.
“What the hel—“
You saw something stare back at you at a distance.
A dulled yellow color was the first thing you saw.
Then it was the smile that seemed engraved into its skin.
The limbs were last. Long and skeletal. They aren’t even supposed to stretch like that. Aren’t supposed to be that long.. They cracked into a new position; The sickening crunch made you want to gag. It didn’t move normally just like how it didn’t look normal.
You could only mutter out quietly.
“What is tha–?”
A scream called back.
It made you cry out in pain, clutching your head as you forced yourself to stare, to watch it contort its body to move towards you—.
Towards you?
You ran out.
If you stayed, you’d die.
You ran as fast as you could, as fast as your adrenaline would help you.
The screams told you to not falter.
You did your best to avoid the mobs, knowing whatever was behind you was more of a danger than whatever tried to block your path.

Guess Verity was wrong about something.
You just wished it wasn’t about the one thing that mattered.

Ragged breaths were the only thing that you were conscious of doing, your legs felt like they were on autopilot. Your whole body moving for a chance of life.
You didn’t even know where to go.
Didn’t know any structures that would keep you safe.
The idea hit you slower than you’d like.
Verity.
He was at home.
He must know what to do.
That thing wasn’t him- It couldn’t be. It was just a coincidence that it was yellow and smiling!
…
You knew it was a lie.
But what choice did you have?
All your remaining strength was used to fight your way back home, past every mob and jumping over blocks that got in your way.
You almost cried in relief when you saw your house.
That relief died when you heard the scream echo closer behind you.
Not daring to turn back, you ran. Ran as fast as your legs could manage.
“Verity!”
Another painful scream echoing behind you; It was closer now.
You managed to enter your house, slamming the door shut. Frantic movements to search your house as you didn’t see that yellow ball near the entrance like you left him.
“VERITY! Please!”
You cried out, running and tossing anything that would hide him in an attempt to reveal where he’d be.
Only when the scream was outside your house did you find him settled into a corner between your chests.
Your happiness was short lived. He had no face. Like an empty shell.
You’d laugh at the absurdity if you weren’t about to die.
Tears were clouding your vision.
Was this how you die?
By a yellow freak of a monster?
You held onto the ball.
If you’d die.. At least it wasn’t totally alone.
Clutching the ball closer to you was the only thing you could do now as your door was thrown across the room.
Tears poured out now, heavy blobs falling as you sat in the corner, curling into yourself.
That face you saw in the village forced its way through the crack where the door used to be.
Sobs leaving you involuntarily as you stared at the face of the monster, your body no longer able to do anything as it forced its way in.
You closed your eyes to pray for a quick death.

It was staring at you.
More specifically.. At your hands.
You followed his gaze.
A smiley face looked back.
“You.. tried to protect me?”
