Intro Post

My name is Iris, you can call me Strider or Iris, I don't care. I'm bigender. 30. I occasionally post NSFW/NSFT stuff, so no minors. I don't mind people coming into my DMs and talking to me, or coming into my asks to talk to me and ask questions. I'm an extrovert and I love the attention lol.

I mostly play TTRPGs with my friends, and I don't really participate in a lot of fandom stuff but I am getting into Knights of Guinevere, I like Percy Jackson and a handful of anime's. I prefer DC to Marvel, personally, but I know both.

I don't really have a DNI, I will just block people I don't like or don't agree with. Don't be an ass, don't be racist, don't be homo- or transphobic.

I have narcissistic personality disorder (NPD), suspected paranoid personality disorder (PPD), I'm bipolar 2, AuDHD and OCD. I don't care if people self-dx.

I'm just trying to cover my bases in an intro post so you can kind of get a sense what I'm about lol. If you have a question, just ask. I'm not going to respond to hate mail, even to dunk on you, so yanno, if you want the attention you're not getting it here.

Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as “problematic” in class and our professor was like, “That’s cool, but ‘problematic’ doesn’t really mean anything. It means that the thing you’re describing has a problem, and in and of itself that’s not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else it’s not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like you’re trying to say that this is bad, but you don’t want to say ‘bad.’ Is that right?”

So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the “bad” thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, “I’m uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.”

Once we stopped calling things “problematic” and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, “that’s racist” or “that’s misogynistic” or “ew capitalism gross” out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, “Uhhh... I’m not sure what’s so bad?” and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.

Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I can’t help but think of this professor being like, “Good starting point, now let’s get specific.” I think when we have to commit to saying “that’s ___” it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever we’re claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes it’s art, and it should be full of problems, because that’s what art is.

You should be starting a recipe book. I don't give a shit if you're only 20-years-old. The modern web is rotting away bit by bit before our very eyes. You have no idea when that indie mom blog is going down or when Pinterest will remove that recipe. Copy it down in a notebook, physically or digitally. Save it somewhere only you can remove it. Trust me, looking for a recipe only to find out it's been wiped off the internet is so fucking sad. I've learned my lesson one too many times.
