Lesser-known steps of the writing process:

Finding all the paragraphs where you used some hyper-specific word more than once

Rearranging paragraphs that you swear you wrote in the right order but turned out to be totally backwards

Going for a walk, coming up with the perfect line, and forgetting it as soon as you get home and open your laptop

Creating a separate document where you can dump all of those nice sentences that no longer fit in anywhere

Waking up in a cold sweat because so-and-so was supposed to be barefoot but never actually took his shoes off

One reply that I get to this post is the problem is not romance, but relationships that are given the shortcut of they're in love in lieu of a well-written dynamic. Which I agree with and concede, and I want to submit the same thing happens with found family dynamics.

I call them "Bring Your Own Feelings" relationships. They're not going to sell the characters feelings for each other to you, they're counting on you projecting.

We have this interesting situation where we basically no longer have privacy nor the expectation of privacy, but we also don't have community or meaningful connection with others, so we're all simultaneously both completely exposed and absolutely alone, and please understand that when I say this situation is "interesting", what I in fact mean is that it's "nightmarish and I wish I could wake up"

A story where for part of the book, the main character is a 'side character' to another protagonist. Like the big shit is happening to someone else and that person's friends and then halfway through, it switches and now the main character has to take up the protagonist shit and the former 'protagonist' gets things easier and gets to their happy ending smoother while the main character has to deal with a whole new realm of shit.

some people really do need to start reminding themselves that the answer to "why didn't the character just do [something entirely different]" is often simply "because then there wouldn't be a story"
