Bonus: If I buy a book I get to keep it! The publisher can't turn up at my house at random and confiscate all the books I bought.
I think it was KA Applegate in Animorphs who had one of her technologically advanced aliens (Andalites my beloved) remark in astonishment to a human that we are such curious creatures because we think computers are better than books just because we invented computers second.
It feels like something that would appear in Animorphs. Then he went on that you can open a book to a page and the information is there instantly and unchangeably. He listed many strengths of books there. I haven't thought about this for years. I've always loved computers and books and I don't know that I fully agreed with Elfangor or Ax or whoever it was that said this then, but I totally get it now
It was Ax, in Book #8: The Alien: "Books are an amazing human invention. They allow instant access to information simply by turning pieces of paper. They are much faster to use than computers. Surprisingly, humans invented books before computers. They do many things backward."

Narise smiles as he folds his napkin as Paek finishes signing the bill and places it on the restaurant table. It was a quiet one, upscale and expensive. The type of place he could never afford to go to on his own. But since he'd met Paek, he'd been to places like this more than a few times and was slightly more comfortable. But this one was especially nice, it seemed fancier than the others, with less people around at other tables. only a few across the room had people. The ones around them had no one. But it was a weeknight. It had seemed like one of Paek's usual calls. Since they'd met, from time to time he'd call and invite Narise out and take him shopping, insisting on footing the bill for anything Narise wanted, they usually would go walking after, at a park or a musuem or art galleries, but their days out always ended with food. A dinner or a lunch or coffee and pasteries, always in a classy, expensive place. He had to call them days out, not dates. Because they weren't. Despite Paek asking him out, and paying for everything, and not allowing Narise to even get his wallet out, they weren't dates. Paek was perfectly mannered, perfectly decent, maybe a few subtle flirts or accidental touches, but that might just be Narise seeing things. Paek probably just enjoyed having someone outside his world to talk to. He never gave any indication that he wanted more. Until today, today had been different. It was just entering the winter season, which was usually only slightly cooler than the rest of the year, but it had been an unseasonably cold day. Paek had picked him up in a sports car instead of an SUV, though Narise could see it following them. He'd opened the door for Narise himself instead of one of his men who always seemed to be hovering. He'd offered his hand to assist as usual, but it seemed his grip lingered and withdrew more slowly, allowing his fingers to brush against Narise's. His smiles had seemed particularly soft and his voice had the warm tone that he only seemed to use when speaking to Narise, but it seemed a bit stronger, like buried embers glowing in the ashes of a fire as you start to stir it back to life. The last time he'd heard that edge was when Paek had given him orders when they were messing with the asshole who wouldn't back off when rejected, It'd been stronger then, this was much more restrained, barely there. He'd been touching Narise more too. They went to a fashion show. It was one Narise had been saving money to try and buy a ticket too but had failed to have enough before they sold out. He'd been so excited when he realized they were going to get to watch it that he'd smiled, and grabbed Paek's arm and bounced up to kiss his cheek before encouraging them both to hurry so they didn't miss anything. Paek had wrapped an arm around his waist to guide him through the crowd, looping Narise's arm through his to keep him close when they stopped to socialize, and a hand on the small of his back to direct him to their seats. When they left and stepped outside, Paek had taken off his own coat and settled it over Narise's shoulders, and adjusting it so it enveloped Narise in its warmth as they walked to the car.
He was always considerate like that. Watching out for Narise, anticipating his needs, keeping his health and comfort in the forefront of whatever they were doing. Even taking Narise to the illegal street race came with a guard assigned to monitor him in case he collapsed and a separate, limited access area with a lounge chair for him to rest. So it was probably just Paek being Paek, but Narise couldn't help how his heart skipped a beat as he looked over at Paek, who was standing and moving, before Narise could move himself, Paek was drawing the chair back and offering a hand to help Narise stand. Maybe he was worried that the Fashion show had been too much? Narise offers a fond smile and a soft squeeze before he releases Paek's hand. "Thank you. I am alright though. I've already promised to let you know if I start feeling faint or unwell. You've been so kind and attentive today. You don't have to go so out of your way to take care of me." Paek nods, "I do not need to, but I wish to." He didn't say more, simply picking up Narise's bag and guiding Narise with a hand on his back again all the way to the beautiful car they'd been driving around in today. He opens the door as he had all day and takes Narise's hand to help him in, but he doesn't move, his hand offering the slightest tug to hold Narise back from climbing in. Narise looks up into his eyes, those banked embers in his voice seemed to have climbed into his darkened eyes, whispering promises Narise wanted but knew would never be. the look lingers, Narise turned to face him, barely inches apart, surrounded by the car and Paek, a place some might find terrifying, but Narise had never felt safer. Yet there was a thrumming through his veins, his heart pounding in his chest as his lips part slightly and he tries to think, but coming up with words seemed impossible, swallowed up by the intensity of Paek's stare. Then slowly, hesitatingly, almost as though he was himself scared, or maybe not certain, or something else entirely, he raises Narise's hand to his lips and presses a long kiss to his knuckles, eyes locked onto Narise, studying every minuet detail of his reaction, the tiny gasp that was barely more than a breath, the way he almost stopped breathing entirely. Whatever he was looking for, he must have found, because he stopped Narise's breath entirely with his next move, stepping forward to press a hand to Narise's cheek, curling around his jaw to tenderly, softly hold his head as he presses a long, lingering, soft kiss to his lips. Narise melts into the kiss months in the making, his glossed lips sliding against Paek as the man presses forward, pinning Narise against the side of the car and deepening the kiss. Narise releases his hand to drape his arm around Paek's shoulders, his other hand coming to rest on Paek's chest, wrapping itself around a small handful of his jacket, as though he could by that small grip keep them in the moment forever. Paek wraps his free arm around Narise, tenderly pulling him closer as the kiss lingered on and slowly gentled before it ended softly, their foreheads pressed together as their breath mingled in the cold air, Paek's coat fluttering around Narise in the slight breeze, the chill no longer noticed by either man.
Paek turns his head ever so slightly. Narise can sense the tension in him returning, can guess the internal conflict, the age difference, the places they were in their lives and careers. Narise, a student starting to try to break into multiple public-facing industries and Paek a public CEO and behind the scenes, the right hand of the biggest mob in the city. It was a big difference. But Narise didn't care, he didn't care about the age gap or the jobs, sure the guns were intimidating and sometimes really scary, but he could learn to be ok because it was Paek, Paek who always made sure that he was safe before anything else and had since the first day they met. he lets go of his jacket to run his hand up Paek's chest until both arms were resting over his shoulders and he tilts his head enough for a quick peck, a soft, brief kiss to bring Paek back to the moment. "Don't go backing out on me now. You've kept me waiting months for that." His voice is low and soft and full of excitement. "I shouldn't...This isn't smart. You should walk away now, before you end up wrapped up in my life. You don't know how dark it can get." It wasn't the conflict that Narise had thought he'd hear, there's a certainty. The tone of a man who decided this was what he wanted and what he was going to have and giving Narise one last chance to run. Narise should, he really should-- but he doesn't. He leans up, brushing a breath against his lips before rocking back down and returning to the sweet embrace his forehead still pressed against Paek. "So show me. Let me into your world. Show me all of you and let me show you I won't run." He felt it in his bones, there'd be time for flirting and dramatics and teasing as they negotiated their way to more. But this moment was important, this moment demanded sincerity in every word. He'd tease Paek about his age and job, he'd flirt and snap back and have all the dramatics and fun later, but this pure moment was only honesty, Narise letting Paek know that Narise had made up his mind as well. Paek tightens his arms around Narise and kisses him again, just as sweetly. "Then be prepared, because like hell will I let you go now." He presses forward, his kiss becoming desperate, hungry, but no less skilled as he coaxed Narise, kissing him until there was no room, for thought in his mind. When he finally pulls away, Narise sags slightly against the car as he catches his breath. His tongue flicks against red, swollen lips as he chases the taste of Paek left behind. Paek's eyes were dark and the burning embers in his eyes and his voice glowed brighter with promise and desire.
Narise tugs at the hem of the open back collared vest that he wore as the Rover pulls into the driveway of his destination. He was meeting Paek to attend an even with some of Paek's underworld associates and not the street ones, but the fancy, super rich ones. He'd asked that Narise dress up a bit for the event and so he had.
The sleeveless, three button black collared vest he'd chosen to wear by itself had a plunging neckline to the first of the buttons and the hem was short, leaving small triangles of visible skin on his sides where it didn't quite meet his white slacks. His bare arms and shoulders were dusted with the faintest hint of scented shimmer dust. He paired the outfit with heeled black boots, gold hoop earrings and a black leather watch on one wrist and a three band gold bracelet on the other. His warm honey hair had been swept gently back away from his face leaving his bangs and a few framing pieces.
He'd even gone with a soft natural makeup look and the expensive perfume that Paek had bought him. And of course, his diamond-pattern, mirror leather Chanel bag. Everything he wore except the makeup had been bought by Paek. He'd decided to go with this look since the event seemed to matter to Paek.
He stares up at the mansion as he steps down from the Range Rover that had been sent to get him. He'd been here twice before for Paek's version of 'family dinner' with 'the kids' aka the three men that Paek, his boss/brother Eryx and Eryx’s husband had adopted and raised together, only one of them being younger than Narise; along with a niece and Eryx and his husband’s six year old daughter. Supposedly there was another niece somewhere studying abroad. But this place never failed to remind him that he could look like he belonged, he could even smell like it, but he didn't really belong here. He swallows and walks inside. He's waved inside and into a foyer with a nod and hint of a smile from one of the guards. He waits in the foyer for Paek as he was instructed. Apparently he needed an escort to enter the event.
It only takes a few minutes before Paek arrives, but it's enough for Narise to take in the room. It was tasteful and not overly ostentatious. Just bigger than he was used too, much bigger and everything, even the mirrors scattered through the room, looked expensive. He turns partially at the sound of footsteps and then turns fully when he sees Paek approaching. He takes a moment to take in his boyfriend's outfit. He may only be halfway through his first year of a fashion design program, but he's learned enough to recognize that this is a higher quality version of Narise's favorite of Paek's suits. A fitted, black three piece with a striped shirt. He'd traded in the simple silver tiger on his lapel for a fancier one, with what Narise guesses are diamonds and maybe other things. But it looks expensive. He only spares a moment to admire though before he moves quickly across the polished floor, heels clicking with every step to fling his arms around Paek and stretch on his toes to kiss his cheek.
Paek wraps an arm around him, his thumb brushing against the exposed skin on Narise's back as he kisses him. As the kiss breaks, Narise steps back and slowly spins. “You asked me to dress up, Daddy. How did I do?” He knows exactly what he's doing using that nickname now when they have to go into the event. Paek's eyes darken, but otherwise shows no reaction to Narise's teasing.
“You look beautiful little bird.” Paek brushes some of Narise's hair away from his face and his hand cups his cheek for a moment as he stares fondly at Narise. “You look like my treasure.” His hand drifts from his cheek to his throat, his thumb brushing across the front possessively, making Narise smile at him. “I got you something.”
Narise grins again, “Daddy, you don't have to buy me things all the time. I already look like yours.”
Paek nods sharply. “You are mine. And I want to spoil you.”
He turns Narise and resting his hands on his shoulders, he guides him in front of a mirror. Narise takes a moment to admire the sight of them both, here, together.
Paek meets his eyes in the mirror, his eyes soft and the smile on his lips, fond and caring. He reaches his hand around Narise and only when it's in front of Narise's eyes does he open his hand and let the gold chain in his hand unfold as he held the simple gold chain with a small songbird in flight. Narise widens his eyes at the simple beauty of the piece. “It's beautiful Daddy!” He pulls his eyes away to look at Paek in the mirror again. “Really, Paek! I love it!”
Paek nods as though he'd known this would be Narise's reaction, he probably did. He had had Narise figured out from the beginning. Paek gently lays the necklace around Narise's neck, doing the clasp and adjusting it to lay flat. He smooths his thumbs over the back of Narise's neck and bends his head to place a kiss on the back of Narise's neck. Narise smiles and lets himself lean backwards into the solid strength of Paek. “Can we skip the event and spend time just us?”
“No, little bird. This is work. Besides, I want to show you off.” Narise grins and reaches to pull one of Paek's arms around him as he watches the two of them iin the mirror. “You just want to brag that you got a hot, young college boy hanging on your arm.”
Paek chuckles, enduring Narise's teasing, he loves his attitude but he doesn't have time to indulge him the way he wants to. He has only a few more minutes before he has to be back at his boss's side. He picks up the wrapped box that he'd set down on the table next to the mirror. “ I have something else for you. This one is important.” He pulls off the plain, brown paper to reveal the polished leather box marked with the jewlers logo and hands it to Narise. “In my world, status matters. Who you are to someone else matters. I want everyone to know that you are mine.” Narise looks at the box, larger than any of the other jewelry boxes he'd been given.
He looks up at Paek, still facing the mirror. “I'm always yours. You've made that clear to everyone before I even was. I don't think that there's anyone who could doubt that.”
He opens the box slowly and stares at the item inside. It had to be worth thousands, maybe even millions, he wasn't great at knowing how much any particular piece of jewelry was worth. But it was expensive. A beautiful collar, gold, diamonds, emeralds, and a black stone he can't identify, creating two tigers, their tails forming the connection behind his neck and the heads would rest on either side of the hollow of his throat and connected in the front by one paw of each tiger.
“It's beautiful, but it's too much. This is too much. I can't accept something this expensive.” It hits him again, how different his world and Paek's world is. Something like this could probably cover all of his and his brothers expenses for a year or more.
“There is no such thing as too much for you, little bird.” Paek reaches around to pick up the collar and unfasten the clasp. “You deserve pretty things. I enjoy giving them to you. Let everyone who sees you know whose you are. Wearing my symbol also means that the guards will be able to make sure you're identified and protected if something happens. I'd burn the world if something happened to you.” Narise saw the fire in Paek's eyes and shivered slightly. He should be scared, the fierceness, the possessivness, like Narise was property, the way he issued a threat he meant so casually. It should scare him. He knew that. But it didn't. He felt safe, protected. No one could take this love from him and no one could get near enough to hurt him. Paek lifts the collar and clasps it around Narise's throat. His hands linger until hee embraces Narise, leaning down to place his head on his shoulder. “There. Now you look like my darling.” Narise stares, there had been a finality in the soft click of the clasp, as though a promise had been sealed. As though Paek was saying without words, run if you dare, you've long lost your chance to escape me. You're mine for life now.”
Narise lets Paek take his weight. “Any chance I can convince you to take off and go find something fun to do or maybe drag me off to one of these closets?”
Paek laughs, “No, my heart, but I promise I'll make it up to you later.” Narise sighs, but turns in Paek's arms to kiss him. If he couldn't do what he wanted, he could at least be kissed properly before he had to go in.
Paek didn't let them linger too long, pulling himself together and pulling away. But not losing himself doesn't do anything to bank the glowing embers in his dark eyes. He wraps Narise's arm through his. “Remember little bird, if we get separated, just tell people you're my darling and nothing else. You don't need to talk to anyone if I'm not right next to you. And don't go anywhere with anyone. Not even the boys. Just find me or Eryx and no one else.”
Writers have two modes and they are "i haven't written in three weeks and i am rotting from the inside and everything feels wrong and i don't know who i am anymore" and "i wrote for four hours straight and forgot to eat and it's dark outside and when did that happen and i feel like a god" and there is nothing in between. no chill. no medium setting. just famine or feast and a very confused nervous system.
the constant struggle of being unable to decide whether you want to read or write and ending up doing none of those things because by the time you’ve decided it’s 9pm and now it’s actually time to watch your show
Paek is in a meeting when his phone starts vibrating, a number he doesn’t recognize lighting up the screen. He only glances to confirm that it’s not one of the few numbers saved or the many he has memorized and turns back to the meeting. Then it vibrates again, same number, then again and again, then another and another. He shuts the phone off. He’ll deal with this after the meeting.
As the meeting ends and it moves to the networking that always takes place after them, he leaves guards in place and signals to his boss that he is going to deal with whatever caused this number, that few should have, to be called so many times. He steps into the quiet hall, powers up the phone and feels his blood turn to ice as he sees the text sitting above all the missed call notifications. ‘This is Narise’s brother. Call back now.’
He’s normally ignore orders given by anyone but his boss or punish the audacity, but this involved his boy, so he called.
The phone rang once and he didn’t get a greeting, only a clipped “Narise was arrested.”
Paek was surprised. He knew his sweet boy had a bit of a wild side, but arrested? That was not something he expected. But it was something he could deal with. That was likely why his brothers called with the urgency that they had. Island boys probably didn’t know how to deal with city police, even if they’d lived here a year or two. “Why?” He asks, clipped, and professional, slipping into a role he’d held for many years. How bad was it? How much trouble has his little bird gotten himself into?
The answer surprises him. His little bird had mentioned loving speed and the big bikes he saw at the races. He knew Narise could drive, that he liked going fast over slow drives, that he preferred the bikes or sports cars over the SUV’s. But he also knew that he’d been told by Narise that speed and adrenaline would cause his symptoms to act up and throw off his balance which is why he could rarely ride a bike himself. So it was almost as much of a shock as hearing he’d been arrested when he heard the charges. “Street racing and reckless driving.”
Someone had given his boy a racing car. Someone, someone not in his organization since he hadn’t been informed, he watched all their races, bikes and cars, as part of his job and they hadn’t had a race in over two weeks, someone had let his boy race. And someone had allowed his boy to get arrested. That would have to be dealt with.
Anyone who felt confident enough to let his boy race behind his back was getting far too arrogant and forgetting their place. He’d have to look into that. It would wait a few hours though while he dealt with the more immediate problem. He quickly got the information on who had arrested Narise and where he was being held. “He’ll be with me for a few days. You can call your brothers tomorrow. Let that diver know the kind of trouble he’s getting into.” He’s going to have to handle this before whatever was going on becomes a problem. “I’ll handle it. He’ll call when I have him.”
He turns to where his boss and best friend is coming out of the room, his quirked eyebrow in Paek’s direction, a question, concern and order in one. He steps over and in quick whispered words outlines the situation. All he receives is a single nod, but for them, it’s enough. After so many years, too many close calls coming up, a few whispered words, a glance, a nod, that was all it took to carry entire conversations. His boss had taken in the information, weighed the costs, the risks, the potentials, and given the go ahead to use their resources to address the issue.
He excused himself and after double checking the increased security, he hurried out the door, a group of his men close behind him already calling the lawyer to head to the station to get his boy.

Just find me or Eryx and no one else.”
some days writing is ✨creative inspiration✨
other days it’s staring at a sentence for 10 minutes deciding if “walked” or “stepped” sounds better
Ways to Describe Emotions / Feelings!! <3

Writing Sexual Tension
Some tips and tricks I’ve seen on Tumblr, on Pinterest or have learned the hard way while writing. These are pretty basic but sometimes basic is good!
Realizing they can feel the person touching them. Maybe they’re not touching but they can feel the warmth.
Accidentally saying something flirty and both of you freeze. Or saying something flirty and the other person panicking and running away
Eyes dropping to lips. Eyes looking them up and down. Eyes unable to look away. Eyes unable to make contact without blushing. Eyes are you best friend.
Mirroring. When people have crushes or like someone (or want someone to like them) they do what is called mirroring. If character 1 crosses their arms and character 2 has a crush on them, have character 2 cross their arms too.
New Girl taught me about toes. If their feet are facing you, they want to stay. If their feet are pointed away, they want to leave. I’ve found its not always true but its something you can mention or use.
Unable to stop smiling. Unable to stop laughing.
Touching the other one when you laugh. Touching them to move them out of the way. Touching them and not moving your hand away
Hugging them when you see them. Sharing a bed. Trying to be near them at all moments.
Looking at their lips and fantasizing about kissing them.
Watching others interact in some way with them or how they act around them and being super jealous, wondering why they don’t act that way with you.
