Athos: Hierarchy in plain sight
It's right there, if you're paying attention. Dom-sub dynamics. In The Three Musketeers, each Musketeer has a dedicated manservant, who prepares the meals, then eats table scraps. Who gets "thrashed" by his Master for mistakes or insolence. Athos was the Alpha Dom Musketeers leader.
Dumas: "Although scarcely thirty, handsome, and intelligent, Athos seemed older because of his reserve, roughness, and silence. He never discussed women, and when others did, he participated only through occasional bitter or misanthropic remarks. He taught his servant Grimaud to understand gestures and minute movements of the lips, and spoke to him rarely. Grimaud feared Athos “as he did fire." And revered him, too.
