Actual good first-time college student advice:
Wear jeans/pants that “breathe” and bring a sweater, even if it’s scorching hot out, until you know which building blasts the AC to 60 degrees F and which feels like a sauna
Backpacks with thick straps are your friend! Messenger bags are cool and all but if you’re commuting with a lot of stuff, symmetrically styled backpacks are better for your back
You are your own person and you can walk out whenever you need to or want to, so long as you’re not disrupting the class. Meaning you can go to the bathroom without permission, take a breather if you’re anxious, answer an important phone call, etc.
If you don’t like the class on the first day, if you can- DROP THAT CLASS AND TAKE ANOTHER ONE! It’ll only get worse from there!
If you can, take a class outside your major; it’s a good break from your expected studies.
You are in charge of your schedule. Your adviser and guidance counselor is there to ‘advise and guide’ but if you don’t like certain classes and you can substitute for others, that’s your choice.
Consequently, if you are changing anything drastic in your plan, talk with your adviser and instructors.
Pay attention to your credit hours and grades. Never leave this to the last week of school, you will be sorry and stressed beyond belief!
Unless it’s a lab book or otherwise specified, go to the class for a week or so before buying an expensive textbook. Some classes, while having it on their required list, do not actually use the textbook a whole lot and you might find some of it scanned online. Rent if you can or buy used online (schools actually don’t give discounts). Use your best judgement on what you think you need.
Tell the people who go up to you selling or advertising things you are not interested in that you are in a rush to class and don’t have time to listen to them. It’s less rude and they’ll leave you alone.
The smaller the class, the better it is to have some sort of acquaintanceship with a couple classmates. They might save your ass if you are absent one day or need to study. And talking with them makes the time go by faster without it being so insufferable.
You don’t need to join a club or sport, but internships are cool and useful!
If you can afford it, take a day off once or twice each semester if you’re too exhausted. Just be aware of what you missed and if it was worth missing!
Your health is the most important, this goes for mental health too!! Note: College-age/upper teens is when mental disorders like depression and anxiety are most commonly diagnosed. Most schools have therapy services, especially during exam time. Look into it if you need to!
Communicate with your professor if you are having trouble with something. Anything.
Eat and stay hydrated. Bring a water bottle and snack to class.
All-nighters will happen but never go over 36 hours without sleep.
It’s going to be hard and there will be times you might think about giving up. This WILL happen. You just have to make sure what you’re doing isn’t making you absolutely miserable and/or there is something rewarding and positive to look forward to at the end!
I did none of this and it bit me in the ass every time so this is EXCELLENT ADVICE.
ADDITIONAL ADVICE
Don’t let a mental health day turn into a mental health week because you will be so screwed.
Pay attention to the syllabus and do not lose it. A lot of professors put all of the assignment due dates in there and ONLY in there.
If your school has blackboard or moodle etc. CHECK IT. a lot of professors will only post certain info there and not talk about it in class
Check your student email account weekly. A lot of it will be unimportant junk but sometimes it’s the only way professors will communicate.
Check your student email multiple times DAILY.
THANK YOU. I’m so glad i have resources like this queued up in my ‘college’ tag bc honestly i was so stressed before
Advice from someone who really fucked up their freshman year:
READINGS ARE NOT OPTIONAL.
I REPEAT. READINGS. ARE. NOT. OPTIONAL.
Put them in your schedule, read BEFORE class. And summarise it. For bonus points, come up with some questions about the text and go introduce yourself to your professor either after class or during office hours, and ask them about it. This will make them much more likely to remember you in a positive light (and possibly bump your grade up if you hit a hard patch.)
Your library will have a copy of your textbook. If you cannot afford to rent it, you can go to the library and borrow it from the front desk for a few hours whenever you need it. It is there for you, okay?
SO DO YOUR READINGS.
your bare minimum isn’t actually that bare or minimum. my dad once told me that there’s nothing in this world that’s easy and that’s true tbh. everything we do takes energy, time, and effort. even the little things. if you feel like you’re not doing enough please try to think about your circumstances and what’s currently available to you: chances are, there’s something that’s diverting or otherwise draining you. and to pull away from that and get something done regardless? well, i think that’s really admirable! please try to take pride in the things you do accomplish in a day, no matter how small or trifling you perceive them to be. you can’t be proud of your growth if you don’t notice where you already are!
It’s nice wanting to make others happy, however at the end of the day you are the one living your life; make sure what you do brings happiness to yourself too.
bad study habits to leave in 2017
cramming the night before. do a little every day and get a good night sleep before the test
procrastinating. promise yourself you’ll do 5 minutes of a task you’ve been putting off for a while. you’ll be surprised how quickly that 5 minutes turns into 10 and 10 into an hour and before you know it you’ll be done and able to enjoy guilt-free leisure time
not asking for help. make the most of your teachers and classmates who want you to succeed. don’t suffer in silence
saying yes to everything. it’s important to try new things but it’s also important to have enough spare time to see your friends and get enough sleep
being distracted. turn off the tv. turn off your phone. focus on studying so you can get your assignments done as efficiently as possible so you can enjoy your free time
not having a planner. this doesn’t have to be a beautiful bullet journal. just make sure you have a way of keeping on top of everything you have to do so you don’t get overwhelmed whether that’s in a store-bought diary or in you phone’s calendar
eating (too much) junk. fuel your body and your mind with fruit and veg. if you’re at university try cooking in bulk to keep costs down. you’ll be able to concentrate better if you’re eating well
not taking breaks. your brain needs to take breaks, even if you have a big test coming up. for every hour you spend studying take a 10 minute break and stretch/make a snack/take a shower/call a friend
not rewarding yourself. take time to be proud of everything you’ve achieved so far. enjoy the success you’ve worked so hard for
still valid and relevant!!
look, tomorrow you will wake up and feel a bit better, a bit calmer. you are going to figure things out eventually, it dosnt have to all be done tonight. take a deep breath, relax your shoulders, and get some rest. you will manage.

Teachers: Wikipedia is very unreliable *Hands out 25 year old textbooks instead*
Alrighty guys ,gals, and other genders and lack thereof I’m gonna teach ya a thing.
A lot of teachers will go on about not using wikipedia as a source.
“It’s bad,” they say. “I will deduct points if you do it.”
Well wikipedia is actually a great source of information and fuck what your teacher said, you absolutely can use it.
The key though is knowing
A.How to use it.
B. How to source it.
and
C. whether it is good info or trash.
NowFirst Lets look up something on wikipedia. Say your writing a paper on Gregor Mendel and Mendelian Inheritance.
So you zoom over to the Wikipedia page on Mendelian Inheritance.
Now there is a lot of information here. Not all of it is strictly necessary for that essay you are writing. So you read through and suddenly you see something that is good info for your essay.
Boy oh boy this information is useful. To bad your teacher said No Wikipedia Ever.
However there is a loophole.
It’s right there.
No. Go closer.
You see that little four? Its a citation number. Think of wikipedia as it’s own essay. It got it’s information from other sources out there. Just like you are trying to right now. And since there is a citation, it’s going to be listed at the end of the wikipedia article.
Look at citation number 4
Look at that you have your first citation. From Wikipedia.
And look. Do you see it. There is a link. It’s the blue words with the boxy arrow thingamajig.
That thing. Click it.
Why did you leave wikipedia you ask? Wikipedia is great. You have several sources from there. But There is more than what the put in to that wiki article. Those sources Wikipedia gave you are helpful. And now that you are at the source, you can utilize it.
But what if its a book that’s the source.
You can either head to your local library and see if they have it, order it, or avoid the book source. Online sources are just as valuable.
Also do not quote directly from the wikipedia. Quote from the source and then use quote citation.
And MLA citation. Use MLA citation. Since you are linked to the sources cite them. Not the wikipedia.
Your teacher will never know. And now you can finish that sweet essay you got planned.
You’re on your way to greatness.
For anybody not aware you can abuse the absolute fuck out of Wikipedia for any papers!
I’m an academic librarian and I 100% endorse this post
I am also an academic librarian and I 100% endorse this post. CITATIONS are important.
knowledge is everything. educate yourself on whatever speaks to you. master whatever moves you.
The second girl at least read the book to confirm that it was shit, she even had Capote on deck as backup. Chick 1 is just lazy
Nope. Girl 2 saw that Girl 1′s absolutely accurate analysis was being shut down just because it wasn’t stated in an intellectual way (in spite of its validity). So Girl 2 reinforced Girl 1′s opinions in solidarity and made sure that it was absolutely clear that Girl 1 was factually correct. WITHOUT taking credit for her observations (”kim is right” instead of “Actually, kim”)
Girls supporting Girls.
Girls not letting other girls be treated poorly.
If you read thirty pages of a book and hate it, that’s a good analysis. Girl 1 literally said, “It sucked for these reasons, and I only got through 30 pages.” She was absolutely paying attention and trying to get it. But if all you get is a headache, fuck that book.
I love this exchange

Stress is something most students deal with, whether it stems from school, your personal life, or both. While a small, level of stress may motivate you to finish your assignments sooner and more efficiently, oftentimes stress can overwhelm us. For me at least, there are times every semester where it’s hard for me to concentrate on my studies because I’m so stressed out that my brain can’t think about anything else. The following are some of the ways that I stop my stress from overwhelming me to the point that I cannot study, as well as how I work on relaxing and letting go of what is stressing me.
Disclaimer: I’m not a therapist (obviously) so if you suffer from clinical depression, anxiety, etc. please see a licensed professional for advice on how to handle it. These tips are all based on my personal experience, but I am in no way suggesting that they will work for everyone. I understand that for some this post may not be helpful and that is ok. Again, I’m just sharing what I do, to deal with my stress, in the hopes that it may help someone else going through the same thing.
Tips for Handling Stress
Take a deep breath. Set yourself a timer and give yourself five minutes to feel sad, and complain about how much school sucks. When your timer’s finished, you have to move on. Get up, get yourself a glass of water (or coffee), and start working.
Make a list (in your head or on paper) of all the things that are stressing you out. Then go through each one, and either decide how you’re going to fix it, or come up with a statement that explains why you shouldn’t be stressed about it (this last one is for illogical stressors). So for example, my list might look like this:
I’m worried that I’ll get a bad grade on the paper I just submitted
I have a test in three days that I’m not prepared for
I’m worried that I won’t be able to meet all the deadlines for my study abroad app
Then I would come up with solutions. These might look something like this:
Since I already turned in the paper there is no point in worrying about the grade; it’s out of my hands now. But I can always take whatever corrections I get and apply them to the next essay.
I’ll make a study schedule for the next three days, and make sure to prioritize studying for this test.
I’ll set up a meeting with my study abroad advisor to go over all the deadlines I need to meet. Then, I’ll put them on my calendar so that I know when everything is due.
Take a walk outside. Listen to music with headphones while you’re doing it. Try not to think about school or anything else that may be stressing you out. Seriously walking and being outside helps so much; I went through a time where I was pretty depressed and taking like 10+ walks a day was the only thing keeping me going.
If you’re having trouble clearing your mind enough to do homework, listen to music while you’re studying. On days when I’m super stressed, I find that listening to music helps distract my brain from what I’m stressed about, which helps me focus on my assignments.
Do something relaxing to take your mind off of school for a little bit. I know a lot of us in the studyblr community (me included) get overwhelmed with homework, and then feel as if we have to spend every waking minute studying. This is not healthy, and if you’re super stressed it can be worth taking the time to breathe and do something, not school related, that makes you feel good. Make yourself some tea/hot chocolate, do a face mask, read a chapter of your favorite book, etc. Even if it’s only a short break, when you return to your studies you will be in a much better frame of mind to focus on them.
As much as it’s important to take breaks, we can’t avoid our assignments forever. But you can make your studies more enjoyable by creating a relaxing environment to study in. When I know I’m going to have to stay up late to finish my homework, I put my pjs on, make myself some hot chocolate (or coffee depending), light a candle, and turn on my fairy lights. It makes my room feel super cozy, and I don’t mind studying as much because I still feel relaxed. If your anxious about something, doing this can help you relax and thus increase your focus while doing homework.
Talk to someone close to you about what’s stressing you out. Even if they can’t necessarily do anything to help me, I find that voicing my frustrations out loud can make me feel better. At the very least this person can hopefully offer you some encouragement.
Practice positive self-talk. Remind yourself that you are capable of dealing with the things that are stressing you out. Tell yourself what a great person you are. Remind yourself of everything you have already accomplished. I know it sounds cheesy, but affirming yourself, and your abilities, even you don’t necessarily believe it at the moment, can over time help you feel better about yourself. Sometimes, I write positive statements on my mirror using whiteboard markers so that I can see them when I wake up, and remind myself to stay positive.
Another thing that helps me is reminding myself that in five years the thing that’s stressing me out won’t really matter in the long run. Employers five years from now aren’t going to care that I failed a class, no one will remember that embarrassing thing I did in five years, etc. This really helps me put things into perspective.
It sucks that school can have such a huge effect on our mental health, but there are ways to deal with it. The important thing is to realize that you’re stressed out and then figure out what steps you can take to help you feel better, and not let it take over your thoughts. Hopefully, this helps one of you if your struggling with letting go of your stress and with working while super stressed. And remember, my ask box is always open if you just need someone to talk to.
If you struggle with anxiety, overwhelm, or just plain feeling like a failure, I have a mantra for you that’s been really helping me out lately:
Just show up.
I used to skip class because the whole thing was so overwhelming: I had to get dressed in something clean even though I never had the energy to do laundry, walk to school, sit in class for up to three hours, plus pay attention, take notes, and participate in discussion. In reality, I was being a perfectionist, and life would have been a lot easier for me if I had Just Shown Up. By staying home because of my depression and anxiety, I wasn’t giving myself the chance to do any of that. I was such a perfectionist that being a “bad” or average student was unthinkable, so I stopped being a student at all.
If you’re having trouble getting something done, Just Show Up. You don’t have to be employee of the month. You don’t have to be valedictorian. Just Show Up.
ime it also helps to be like “you dont have to stay the whole time, you just have to go” bc most of the time once youre there it’s fine. a lot of things are like that, like… you dont have to finish the dishes, just start them. a lot of the time once you start a task it’s easier to finish than to stop, especially if you can trick yourself like “after five more minutes if i still feel bad i’ll go home” or “after washing two more dishes i can stop for today”
even if you don’t finish the task, you started it, and by completing part of it you lessened your future workload and ALSO taught your brain that things may not be as daunting as they seem
This is wisdom! Peace!
you know what years of therapy taught me - Redefine success
so what if no one else gets how the things you define as successes are victories because you have to
so you got to work - success
you used public transport - success
you went to the supermarket instead of ordering online and didn’t just buy things you dind’t want because you got scared - MASSIVE success
Redefine success, your body moved the goal posts, there is no shame in acknwoledging that
my policy for “they’re just doing it for attention” has always been and always will be “then someone needs to pay attention to them”
I’ve always thought this
Let me tell you about the time I worked as a computer teacher for a small private school. My first day went well, but in the staff room that day I was told I was lucky that this one kid was out sick. No one could control him.
Next week, he was in. It took me 10 minutes to determine that I was dealing with a 10 year old kid who was incredibly intelligent, more than a little bored, and loved being the center of attention.
He was also black. I say this because I think that a intelligent, somewhat bored, attention-seeking white kid might have been treated differently.
So, day one I made him sit by himself where no one could see him to stop him from taking over the class (which he was clearly used to doing).
Day two: I paid close attention to when he finished (not surprising, he was first and did everything correctly). I immediately told him he was helping me, and paired him with a struggling student.
My hunch was right; he made a excellent teacher. He thrived on having this other kid’s attention. He wasn’t bored. He was one of my best students.
He was a bright kid. And he needed people to pay attention to him and would settle for any kind of attention he could get. But when he was able to channel that positively, he was a great student and a really helpful classmate.
