Comfort Food
I learned about life at my grandmothers feet
Stringing green beans and sorting dried black eyed peas.
My childhood was biscuits and gravy breakfasts
Fried bologna lunchs and pinto bean dinners.
My grandmother taught me that there aren't many things in life good food cant fix
And for those it can't you look to the people you can feed
Because where there's good food you can find good people.
So when anxiety has my heart in my throat
I push it down and pull my sleeves up
I fight it with the family arsenal
Corn bread, fat back, collard greens
I tell it that I'm too busy to worry
I've got three pans on the stove and hungry mouths to feed.
And yes, some days I'm too tired to eat
But in the south there is no such thing as going to bed hungry
So someone steps in with a plate full of comfort food.
And on those days I'm brought back to my grandmothers feet
Stringing green bean and sorting black eyed peas.
Then, suddenly, life doesn't seem quite so scary anymore.
