I literally haven't even finished atsiam yet (finished ch5 today), but I couldn't help but think of this 😭 Idk why but I feel like Torrent would get cute aggression from his younger self, especially with past Waterboy feeling conflicted and jealous I can totally see Torrent being like super understanding about it and just hold nothing against his past self for being like it anyway ahem it's not super clean, but I'll probably be drawing them more in the future anyway and will make something more polished but I just wanted to get it out of my brain I love them sm
Silly wet boy
People have asked me how I'd draw black hairstyles in the Arcana style because, regrettably, there are no examples from the game. I've only ever tried generic dreadlocks but I wanted to branch out and really try some studies because there's enormous diveristy and creativity in these styles
Afro hair really is no more complicated to draw than straight/curly hair but we really have far fewer references in far fewer styles so we need to put in extra work to figure them out rather than just being taught how to draw them by looking at other artists
So, this is less of a tutorial and more my attempt to figure out how you might draw different hairstyles in the Arcana style (some less accurate than others but I tried)
Massive shoutout to @donutsbagels! Their art style is angular and gorgeous and they have these amazing pages of creative, varied black hairsyles which were a big inspiration here. The first page here is traced over their art to try get the muscle memory for their shapes. Please look them up! Their character designs are incredible
I'm sorry if you've been asked this before, but would it be possible to see your brush settings that you used for the arcana tutorials? You are art goals and I'd love to learn your ways!! Thank you in advance!!!
Right, yeah, I actually got an ask on this a while back and the reason I delayed answering it was because I’d saved over the brushes and had to remake them from scratch and I’m still at a stage where I’m tweaking them to be accurate.
The devs actually released the photoshop brush they use for the game here (x) so if you use photoshop, you’re lucky and get to go straight there for the brush settings. Since CSP settings don’t work the same way, I had to split it up into a sketch/colouring brush and a lineart brush.
Here’s a link if you want to use them (x)
More of an Arcana style guide to go with my colouring guide.
I tried to cover key aspects that make the style distinct so I hope this can be useful :D
A guide on my process for colouring like in the Arcana which I developed through studying the style.
Now, this is just for sprites or for neutral lighting. In the case of most memories/CGs, you have more interesting colours to use, but the process is identical. There are just extra steps.
Using my favourite memories for each character as examples (hopefully, you can tell which ones) you can see this process. All of this happens on layers above the base drawing.
Usually, you set a colour-filled layer to the setting “multiply” over the entire drawing, then using a “screen”, “add”, or “hard light” layer, you add the lighting. Depending on the intensity of the lighting, the outline will be coloured to be lighter.
The shading colour rarely changes, aside from slight hue changes.
Misc advice/tips/tricks below. I may update it depending on if I get further questions.

If you look closely you may notice I enjoy squishing Waterboy's face :3
Cross posted from Instagram? I believe that's the correct lingo. Anyway, I'm art.hijinks on Instagram but I'm not really active over there anymore. Mostly because the cutthroat algorithm made me anxious 😔
